Site 'stole' pics to rank Swedish teen girls

Published: 12 Nov 10 15:01 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/30184/20101112/

A brash website allowing users to rate Swedish teenage girls as "ugly" or "hot" based on the unauthorised use of pictures from their Facebook accounts has been reported to the police.

The site went live late on Wednesday night and word spread quickly among high school students in Borås in western Sweden, the Borås Tidning (BT) newspaper reported on Friday.

The images of the girls, the majority of whom were 16 to 18 years old, were copied from their Facebook sites without permission.

Apparently inspired by a scene from "The Social Network," a film detailing the founding of the popular social networking site Facebook, the Swedish site presents users with pictures of two young women and allows users to vote on which one they find more attractive.

Girls who receive the most votes end up on a "Hot List," while those who don’t get votes are relegated to an "Ugly List."

"You don't want to be included? Too bad. Sue us!" read a message on the website acknowledging that the images were being used without consent.

By Friday afternoon, however, the site had been taken down.

According to Anders Ahlqvist from the IT-crimes department of Sweden's National Bureau of Investigation (Rikskriminalpolisen), the site violates Sweden's law governing the use of personal information (Personuppgiftslagen – PUL).

"Copying pictures from a Facebook account and then publishing them somewhere else without that person’s permission is against the law," Ahlqvist told The Local on Friday.

While Ahlqvist hadn't seen the site himself, he said it was "quite clear" from media reports that it failed to conform with Swedish law.

He theorised that the controversy surrounding the site likely caused either the creator of the site or someone involved in hosting the site to take it down.

The site was up for less than 48 hours and the photos displayed consisted of the usual portraits common on Facebook and were free of nudity or pornographic content.

Nevertheless, the reputations and self-images of many girls in Borås had already been affected.

"It really hurt and it feels like this is something that will follow me for a long time," one 17-year-old girl who ended up on the "Ugly List" told BT.

"I don't want to go to class and show myself and think about all the guys who could have sat in the computer lab and clicked on me."

Maria Gustafsson heads the Sven Eriksonsgymnasiet high school, one of several Borås high schools with students who ended up on the site.

"It's obviously really upsetting," she told The Local.

"They feel violated and exploited at having their pictures used in that context without their permission."

Gustafsson said she has already filed a formal report with the police, while the school considers how to address the situation.

"Students who need our support will certainly get it," she said.

"We're also thinking more about how we can educate our students about the risks of putting personal information on the internet."

Police are now investigating who is behind the site and if the involved parties have engaged in criminal acts.

Possible criminal charges that may apply include harassment, defamation or breach of the personal data act.

One of the biggest lies told across the world; Swedish women are beautiful.
16:24 November 12, 2010 by asee
lol @ theorignalblckman!

how could you say that, indeed they are beautiful :)

@ theorignalblckman!

They must have something going for them. They have Swedish men kissing their butts!

Hmm I get the impression that you've come to hate that which you most want, but haven't managed to get.

Your comments are always reliably nuts, but this latest outpooring of angst is the most absurd. Have you ever considered a flight back home? I think you'd be happier and it would be best for everyone, particularly the poor old Swedes who are paying for you while you hate them. Hardly fair is it? So be a man and try and make a go of it back in your own country.

Haha! I bet the creators of the site are sh*tting in their pants now that it looks like they will, indeed, be held accountable for this. I hope they make those little bast*rds pay.

So, lets get this in context:

According to Anders Ahlqvist from the IT-crimes department of Sweden's National Bureau of Investigation (Rikskriminalpolisen), the site violates Sweden's law governing the use of personal information (Personuppgiftslagen - PUL).

But it is legal for the State, or whoever it is to post all your details, birthdate, address etc on websites like birthday.se WITHOUT your consent and that all tax return information and credit check information is freely available....

Double standards at work me thinks ... again.

Awww, looks like the black man hit a nerve! How do you know the black man isn't a high tax payer, especially for those white Swedes who are living on the dole? How do you know the black man wasn't born in Sweden? He is voicing his opinion and you seem bitterly hurt by it, love it.
18:11 November 12, 2010 by Rishonim
TheOriginalBlackMan, LOL. I happen to sort of agree with you. Its a lie which has been propagating for the past 30 years or so. They are beautiful only till their mid 30s and it is downhill after that. Marrying a Swedish girl in her 20's is a big gamble as they tend to turn into ugly Gunillas at 35.
18:58 November 12, 2010 by zircon
And are Swedish men handsome guys or hot? Or are Swedish women hiding these men for a reason?
20:59 November 12, 2010 by Soft Boiled
A lot of Swedish women are indeed beautiful, very beautiful in some cases (most ages). But (and isn´t there always a "but") there a lot of Swedish women who have personalities that don´t conform to the mild and submissive ideals of a typical western male. In other words women with brains and "aggressive" personalities that a lot of men find hard to cope with. Judge a Swedish woman on looks and she will rate very highly... If you are looking for passive lambs as well, then look further afield.
21:03 November 12, 2010 by planet.sweden
@Icarusty

Your logic is as bizarre as the black man. I'm not Swedish. It makes no difference to me what he finds attractive, he could be into goats for all I care.

My beef is with migrants from the Third World who spend months sometimes years plotting their entrance into Sweden and then spend all their time hating the Swedes. Why I ask are they here and what have the Swedes done to deserve this?

And I know he's not a high rate tax payer because his warped logic precludes the possibility of him ever being employed in a high income job.
21:19 November 12, 2010 by Swedesmith
Who wants passive lambs....sheepdogs?
22:26 November 12, 2010 by TheOriginalBlackMan
Swedish women collectively are not attractive and since I've seen a huge amount of beautiful women throughout my life (lived in New York for 30 years) I can safely offer a rational opinion without being a bigot. For a woman to be considered beautiful she should be feminine, have healthy skin, a nice body and a moral compass. Most Swedish women, 99% of them, lack buttocks, hips (men have no hips), bleach their hair blond and are unfit.

As for Swedish women being independent and aggressive, LOL, I see the Swedish Board of Tourism has a resident Blogger on the payroll since that is an outright lie and propaganda. Most women in Sweden are like most women (except for Swedish women collectively being unattractive) across the globe, always looking to capture a man. Their education, job and everything else in reality comes second to having a man.
22:47 November 12, 2010 by Rishonim
@planet,

why are you assuming black man is from a third world country? is it because his pseudo is black man therefore he must be from someone in the savannah? Also one of the reason he may not be in a high tax bracket is because 1 out of every 652 employees in Sweden are from foreign background. Swedish women are ugly after 35 and they wrinkle fast.
23:03 November 12, 2010 by HYBRED
When you speak of Swedish women being more agressive than American women, it is not really true. It would be about equal.

What gives the impression that Swedish women are more agressive is the fact that Swedish men are very wimpy compared to American men.
23:24 November 12, 2010 by double concerto
Yes, planet sweden knows a bit about human psychology and is absolutey correct about black man. No doubts at all.

@Original Black Man-

The women in New York are probably some of the worst looking and have the worst attitudes in the whole USA. So you call them the most beautiful and Swedish chicks the ugliest? LOL. Like the Arabs, the black dudes will take any white chick that they can get. It sounds like you haven't had much luck with the ladies here in Sweden. If I were you, I would reconsider your approach. Of course you'll find some 'hood rats anywhere so it's really hard to believe that you can't get any at all. Must suck for you. lol.
10:40 November 13, 2010 by SarahRF
Why am I not surprised that most of the comments about Swedish women's attraction factor and not about the fact that pictures of people are being put on a website without their consent? Someone mentioned birthday.se, I checked it out, FREAKY! That site then links you to upplysning.se where, once you're registered and signed up, you can see the person's entire Personsnummer, all 12 digits, as well as their full street address, apartment number included. I'm all for openness and being able to find people, but in no way can I support something that does that without the people's consent.
13:28 November 13, 2010 by coolguy09
what'st the site name,,,,,,,,????

It's interesting to read so many ugly men's posts on the internet. You all sound so sad, arguing about which country ahs the most attractive women.

My mission is now to get a hold of pictures of you and put them on a site where we can rate you. I bet that the lot of you would end up on the ugliest men on the planet list.
14:04 November 13, 2010 by Swedesmith
@SarahRF This sounds like a much, much greater invasion of privacy than a few surveillance cameras outside an embassy. Any ne'er do well could do a lot of damage with all that information. A stalker's dream.

And, for the record, I think Swedish women are beautiful. Especially my wife. Hope she reads this.
14:55 November 13, 2010 by DavidtheNorseman
@SarahRF ouch! Something ought to be done about that.

@Everyone arguing with OBM: I think you're missing his point. He seems fixated on very large posteriors as being of prime desirability...I'm guessing most Swedish men/women are not as aroused by such a trait LOL!! Perhaps he would find Southern Italy or Poland more enjoyable :-)

@Original Black Man - as to the moral compass, I recall the wise words of a Canadian band with respect to that, "She ain't pretty, she just looks that waayy" (Northen Pikes)
19:04 November 13, 2010 by ladyontop
I have never seen anywhere else that the majority of women are above average, and every time i went to city center areal i will spot a few real stunning ones. but alas the majority of them are also lack of personality, bit of dull in charactor and lack charisma. Agree with the 35year age mark, almost none of them look good once they hit that age, and they can be a bit bitter.

A black guy would certainly find any race other than black ( and some latin) women are a bit of light on the behind..:)

Rishonim! You and I just don't have same taste dorfmench! Emanuela de Paula?!?!?! You have got to be kidding? You've been warming a bench in yeshiva too long! Emanuela has cigarette cheeks! What man wants a woman with cigarette cheeks?! Like she's been drawing smoke in her mouth since she was twelve. Now Sofia Jannok makes me want a Lapp in my lap!
00:07 November 14, 2010 by Swedesmith
I must be a dorfmench, too. My vote is for Emanuela. Unless, of course, Catherine Zeta Jones is available.

Like this hasn't been done before? The government can't protect your information or your image on the internet. If you post anything online, you have to understand the risks... that you might have your feelings hurt.
04:24 November 14, 2010 by glamelixir
Swedish women are overrated. Most of those which are beautiful then turn 25 and you start noticing what alcohol has done to their skin and bodies.

They are mostly blond, which is a stereotype for beauty, but that doesn't mean much. Their body shape is quite masculine, as someone pointed out, they have no hips or butt and their shoulders are pretty wide.

I would say they are ok, or pretty if you are into blonde girls.

I have seen so many women looking like models in my country, and they are very different from one another. I always felt below average there, Sweden is a better place to stand out.

And as for "strong women", well.. yes, Sweden has more respectful men for the good job that feminists have been doing, but I know very strong and independent women in Southamerican countries (me being one of those) , so I don't see that difference. I think being a strong woman in a hostile envirorment is the real deal, not where men are pussycats.

14:49 November 15, 2010 by soultraveler3
I have to agree with Theoriginalblackman on this.

Swedish women (to me) are generally less attractive than average. Many have very wide faces / jaws, most dye their hair white blonde or black, have fake orangy-looking tans and wear too much makeup. Many are also chubby or so skinny that they have no curves. There are some pretty ones to be sure, but I honestly don't understand where this myth of all swedes being tall, blonde haired, blue-eyed goddesses comes from. It's just not true.

To the commenter above who said that swedish women are more aggressive than their counterparts in other countries, that's not true either. Swedes in general don't have much passion or personality, male or female. Swedish society teaches people to be quiet, not complain and don't make waves.

The women here don't seem to be demanding or pushy at all. I think it might be more the fact that the men AREN'T that might make it seem like the women are controlling in realtionships to some.
14:59 November 15, 2010 by Bumblebeetuna
The Swedish children under 18 shouldn't have their pictures abused like this site has abused them. shame on the creators.

Many many beautiful women in Stockholm. I'd rate them quite high. I think all women get wrinkles past 35.
15:36 November 15, 2010 by Tusker
@Bumblebeetuna

Totally agree with you, children need to be protected from this type of activity.

It truly saddens me to see young people being forced to grow up faster than their own comfortable pace. I am middle aged and still get caught out every now and then by just how evil some people can be and how dangerous the world still is.

I know it will sound as if I am some old fogey but I was never my parents or grandparents equal. They nurtured me to be respectful, to them, but just as importantly myself, and because I know they truly loved me, they shielded me from places and people which I would not be able to cope with. At the appropriate time they reduced the restrictions and when the time was right I went out into the world, carrying the lessons they had taught me. This didn't make me a mummy's boy, rather it prepared me for the military, who after giving me additional guidance and training, prepared me to go to the worst places and meet some of the ugliest people, without losing my own self respect or compromising my beliefs and values.

The supposed freedoms we grant our children are worthless unless they have the life skills and social knowledge to correctly utilise these freedoms. Sadly I too often see the results of people being exposed to things they are not ready to experience and as a result they undergo the most painful experiences of self betrayal, loss of dignity and personal shame. This then causes a life time of feelings of bittterness and disappointment.
