Nobel laureate: 'Ericsson is aiding Iran'

Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi on Monday called on the Iranian diaspora to protest against Swedish company Ericsson, accusing the telecoms firms of aiding monitoring in Iran.

Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi on Monday accused Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson of aiding monitoring in Iran, and encouraged members of the Iranian diaspora in Sweden to protest to the company.

"I am urging you Iranians in Sweden to please email Ericsson and object and say, 'Why are you selling the Iranian government software with which it can control its people'," the Iranian lawyer and human rights activists said.

Ebadi, who was speaking at Stockholm University, said Ericsson had entered dealings with the Iranian government similar to those Nokia Siemens previously had, alleging the company sold Iran software that allowed it to monitor text messages and mobile phone calls.

Ebadi also blasted European satellite operator Eutelsat for giving into an Iranian demand and removing the Persian-language BBC and Voice of America channels from a satellite broadcasting to Iran.

"So in fact, Eutelsat cooperated with the Iranian government in the sphere of censorship," she told the crowd.

"We urge the West, please do not enter in any trade deals with Iran, do not help the Iranian government, it is repression and censorship of its people," she said.

Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her efforts for democracy and human rights.

She has not returned to Iran since she left on the eve of the June 12, 2009 poll, which gave President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term amid widespread allegations by his opponents of voting fraud.

this news is weird!!!

A Swedish company would never do such thing. They adhere to high moral and human values and they would never endanger lives and freedom for profit. She is lying.. Hihihihihihi

It is easy to jump to conclusions, make assumptions and judgements without a fair education which comprises of Trivium style tools. There is no doubt that we are assaulted with all forms of pre-emptive/ programming of opinion/ consent or consensus.

It is also easy and could be a touch unfair in many cases to call people hypocrites. I will give a clear example of pre-emptive programming; subtly harmless, but deadly effective.

Story title 1:

NOBLE LAUREATE: 'ERICSSON IS AIDING IRAN'.

Story title 2:

NOBLE LAUREATE UNCOVERS ERICSSON CASHING IN FROM SPYING SOFTWARE.

Subliminal conclusion:

1) Iran spies on people with the help of Ericsson (Iran is unscrupulous so is Ericsson)

Iran and Ericcson bad.

2) Ericcson is unscrupulous so are all governments using Ericsson and or such software.

Ericsson and all governments bad.

Children and adults are not taught to question authority, analyse, process and reason what they are TOLD IS TRUTH or instructed on how to get passed the mirage of spin.

Our government; I say this because I reside here. Massive government and bureaucracy, massive taxes without transparent use or misuse, monopolies on numerous substances, biometrics in ID and passports, debt based usury FIAT currency, inclusion in international military exercises without consent or approval. Support and or permission for corporations to put toxic products in our food, medicine, behave unethically and without morals with near legal impunity, daily deceit in news and politics. Everything that we understand within our current society systems are designed to benefit a select few at the detriment of the rest. To think this way and show the evidence thereof causes ridicule and accusations of lack of patriotism. Better to be a patriot to people, not government, corporation or central-private-banksters that don't give a damn about us and view us as cattle.

I believe Rishonim would be very surprised and shocked to find out what conduct corporation ownders find acceptable for profit in or out of their country. Does anyone honestly think a multi-billion dollar industry would advertise blood soaked products?

@Veritas, I was trying to make fun of those who would come out in defense of Ericsson. I know very well to which extent corporations will go to make a buck and for ericsson this is business as usual

Very, conspicuously, interesting that the article doesn't mention she is Iranian.

I am Iranian, too. And only see the term 'Iranian' in the news, in a bad and disturbing context. Will you please explain to me why Ebadi's nationality was left out of this article?
12:33 November 23, 2010 by lux.veritas
One thing we tend to forget when making a coment. The inclusion of intonation, emotion, irony, sarcasm, honesty, etc.

I can only hope that no one takes any of my comments as a personal evaluation of their knowledge or intellect.

It is by result of ongoing extensive reading and reasoning I; as many, are forced to take a long hard look at all they have believed. That bitter taste of self-realisation does pass.
13:15 November 23, 2010 by Hagrid
@amirhosein, had you bothered to read till the end, you'd have stumbled on this sentence: "She has not returned to Iran since..." and from this it is apparent she is an Iranian.

You are right about the context in which Iran is mentioned in the news. But you must notice that the media differentiates between the Iranian people (most of whom are ordinary peace-loving people who are unconcerned with world politics, and aspire to live a normal life) and their demented and fanatical leadership, which brutally oppresses them, and is a real menace to the free world. Most Iranians are sick and tired of their regime, and wish to get their country back. As an Iranian, I think you should support heroic people like Ebadi.
13:53 November 23, 2010 by N0DE
Shame on Iranian people, in 1979/78 they were shouting for islamic revolution (check out videos on youtube), in 2009 they are shouting for democratic revolution. in 2029 they will shout for some other revolution. Iranians just do not know how to live in Peace. Shiren Ebadi , what can I say about, self-declared overhyped , coward 'revolutionary' who opted to run away from Iran instead of fighting it out inside her country.Enjoying social benefits. These Afghanis and Iranians just run away from there country in order to get easy money from Swedish Tax payers.
14:21 November 23, 2010 by joserayo
Isn't it the same software as the Swedish authorities use?

The use you give to the software is not Ericsson's business. Or don't the Iranian authorities use computers as well? Why don't we complain in front of all computer manufacturers?

This news is nonsense.
16:38 November 23, 2010 by pjtaipale
The same accusation has been made against Nokia (because *Siemens* sold network technology to Iran). It's rubbish, and shows how Nobel prizes may go to people who either don't have a clue or who intentionally mislead others.

If you sell a GSM network to some place, you also sell the legal interception capability which is provided by the GSM standard. That legal interception functionality may then be misused by the authorities in that country.

Now who did wrong in this case? The telecom equipment provider, or the authorities who use legal interception to apply their own law? Should we blame stones if a woman is accused of adultery and sentenced to be stoned to death?

Which is better for the democratic opposition in places like Iran: that you have a GSM network that people can use and officials can abuse, or not having a GSM network? Compare to North Korea.

This episode just shows how a Nobel laureate is riding the storm of anti-corporate mood, and uitilising the fact that also Western countries have ignorant public.

@ NODE have you read her book !!! Obviously not! Because you are very quick to pass judgement on such a great person like Ebadi, i do not think she lives off Swedish tax payers money and gives talks at universities, is a successful lawyer and a recipient of Nobel peace prize! Do you now? Give it a rest!
21:28 November 23, 2010 by glamshek
Shame on Shirin Ebadi who calls for cut off of economic relations with her own homeland ! She better stay in EU ! And how come Iran being vilified by these illogical, ignorants . Iran is a great country under Ahmedinejad.. Its prospering by leaps and bounds. Have you looked your social and ethical values , disgusting ! Iran has been single handedly defying the super powers since revolution... Thumbs Up... Down with Israel, Down with USA, Down with EU, Down with Shirin Ebadi and its likes. ! Go n sell your honour for money !

Well this is totally unaccetable and immature. I am working at Ericsson and I know how important freedom and personal rigths are in Ericsson values . These days lawful intercepts is basic necessity of very Nation.

If Ericsson will not provide this solution then Iranian Government will purchase it from someone else may be Huawei or ZTE well known Chinese vendors, i think i dont need explain about Chinese philosphy and freedom of speach.

If Ericsson is going to sell this solution to Iranian Government then obviously it will abide by International an Europian Union rules and regulations.

I mean, how much more pathetic does it have to get anyway.

She got a Nobel for peace and democracy!! (Just like Obama got the peace prize for bombing civilians in Pakistan and Afghanistan right)

I don't understand this, democracy hold the biggest monkey crap tyrant ever witnessed on the face of this earth that is much worse than Nazi Germany. This tyrant killed over 6 MILLION people, annihilating 2 major cities off the face of this planet, wages war based on total lies that it has the habit of admitting after approximately 30 years... you know who I'm talking about dont you? Yeah! I'm talking about the USA.

Hey! How many cities did Iran ever bombed off the face of this earth? Zip! NONE! How many civilians did Iran kill in illegitimate wars? The only war I can recall was started by the agents of the nobel peace prizers again, the USA. And BTW, we all know that the CIA is always busy poking its nose in other people's business with all the hi-tech gadgetry in the world (who knows iPhone might also be one of them too), how many countries did Iran ever poked its nose in?? Damn right. Zero, none!!! So stop this bull crap propaganda and give us something real if u can

hi there,

i write from Ericsson media relations. Dr. Ebadi has not been in direct contact with us, but please allow me to say the allegations are not true. we have sold standard GSM equipment to operators. we do not work with the rehime and do all business in accordance with Swedish and UN regulations and sanctions.

Sony Ericsson Cooperating With Iranian Government

see the video of above title in the youtube.

They sold secretly sophisticated equipment to enhance the authorities' ability to tap phones, read e-mails, monitor, trace and survey electronic data on communications networks in Iran. Consequently, many detained and some executed.

in the above mentioned youtube video shows the Islamic Regime's Agents after testing very secretly and in hide the sophisticated devices in the company taking them to the Stockholm's airport to go to Iran for delivering them to cruel Islamic Regime.
