Ex-police chief given lighter sentence

The court of appeal has cut the penalty served to former Uppsala police chief Göran Lindberg to six years for a series of serious sex offences.

Lindberg was sentenced by the district court to six and a half years.

The court of appeal confirmed the convictions against the 64-year-old for aggravated rape, rape, assault, pimping, buying sex and attempting to buy sex.

Lindberg appealed the convictions, seeking to overturn all but the sex buying charges, to which he had admitted. The prosecutor had meanwhile sought an eight year sentence.

The court confirmed the district court ruling that it had been proved that Lindberg raped a 17-year-old girl in January 2007. The girl spent much of the rape tied up, the court concluded.

Lindberg was however found not guilty of having raped the same girl on a prior occasion.

He was also convicted for, among other things, another rape and an assault in connection with buying sex.

Lindberg was found not-guilty, as he was by the district court, on a charge of preparing to commit aggravated rape against a child. This concerned a case involving a 14-year-old girl in Falun in central Sweden. It was while he was on his way to meet the teenager that police apprehended the former chief.

The rape of the 17-year-old was deemed aggravated and Lindberg was ordered to pay damages of 175,000 kronor ($25,000).

Göran Lindberg was principal of the Swedish National Police Academy (Polishögskolan - PHS) from 1989-1997, and was Uppsala county police chief from then until 2006.

The charges against the recently retired senior officer sent shockwaves through the Swedish police force. His seniority and the nature of the charges against him make it the biggest ever scandal in Swedish policing.

The impact of the charges was all the greater due to Lindberg’s reputation as one of the Swedish police’s top authorities on ethics and morals. He frequently gave lectures on topics such as gender equality and spoke out against sexual harassment and bullying.

Why was his light sentence already cut?

He raped a 17 yr old high school girl, and intended to rape a 14 yr old. And he was pimping and buying sex and committing kidnapping acts?

He was the police chief, he should have been penalized even more. When you rmoral authority commits the worst offences the book should be thrown at them.

Especially that this will paint police officers witha very bad light.

Shame on you Sverige.

Perhaps Lindberg will receive a little of what he has dished out while he is in prison. One can only hope.

It seems few dare comment...

Perhaps the violent sexual transgressions he was convicted for are only tip of the iceberg. Sexual predation is a chronic problem.

Bringing law enforcement into disrepute? Destroying trust in the police? Misusing an official position to protect oneself from justice. These also are terrible crimes.

How about this for a headline: Ex-police chief given an even lighter sentence!

The sentence is not light by Swedish standards. If what you meant that the problem is not the verdict but the lenient Swedish justice system, well, we don't care, go back to Texas, Saudi Arabia or whatever :)

he should be punished more!! for knowing the law and being educated

anyone else think that sending a former cop top dog to prison won't really do anything to him. I imagine he will be transferred to some minimal security prison with massive amounts of "work" programs and protection.

To be honest, the penalty for rape should not be prison, but chemical castration.

What a joke!

Example: 18 yr old handicapped person who was forced by gang to shop with skimmed card, convicted to repay card company + 55 hrs community service. Repaying card company could take 10yr = sentence.

This because the police can't be bothered to hunt for evidence against the ring leaders.

Doesn't matter which country, the law is full of inconsitencies & bias.

Truly awful. I agree that the sentence is much too light. He has cast a dreadful shame on the police force; my thoughts go to the 17 year old victim.

@Prat: I agree, domestic violence and sexual assault are a dangerous problem that Sweden faces right now. What kind of message does this send? If the CHIEF is arrested, just who can you trust??

Triple his sentence (at the minimum) so that he spends the rest of his natural life (or close to - considering his age) in prison thinking of how he has ruined so many innocent lives.

Are you freaking kidding me?!! It's so stupidly foolish to give him a lighter sentence. What were that thinking? It's like saying to the world, Ahh sex with children is not so bad, we will just give you a slap on the wrist. And that message spreads to all the rest of the sick pedophiles out there.

BAD! VERY VERY BAD!
