Sweden's ruling Moderate Party has polled record high support in November, pulling ahead of the Social Democrats and Left Party combined, according to a new survey.

The DN/Sydsvenskan/Synovate poll shows support for the Moderates at 37.5 percent, the highest level for the party in the measurement's 31-year history, compared with 27.7 percent for the Social Democrats.

The ruling centre-right coalition led by 10.5 percentage points over the opposition in the poll, with 52.7 percent support compared with 42.2 percent.

Social Democratic party secretary Ibrahim Baylan is not surprised by the party's level of support in the poll.

"After the last weeks' developments and events, I am not surprised that it has led to some uncertainty," he said.

Baylan does not believe that the polls themselves will affect the party's renewal process.

"I do not feel particularly worried because we know that the value of poll numbers early in a term is not necessarily an indication of how the election will go," Baylan added, referring to the party quickly polling a seemingly impregnable lead after losing the 2006 election.

"We had a strong advantage and we know now that it ended with the worst election since 1914," he rued.

The party's top executives met at party headquarters on Friday for the first time since leader Mona Sahlin stepped down two weeks ago to discuss the party's future.

"The actual election results are more than enough to instill a sense that we need change," he said.

The Christian Democrats would fall below the threshold to enter Sweden's parliament, the Riksdag, with only 3.8 percent support. However, the Moderate, Centre and Liberal Parties would form a majority in Sweden's parliament, the Riksdag, if an election were held now.

The executive committee of the Christian Democrats met on Friday.

At the meeting, embattled party leader Göran Hägglund addressed an email in which, according to Expressen, outgoing party secretary Lennart Sjögren scolded party critic Bengt Germundsson for his harsh criticism against Hägglund and the party leaders last month, calling it "inappropriate."

The party will appoint a new party secretary next month.

@miss79

Spend less time worrying about capitalism, and more time worrying about capital letters. Your posts might seem a little less nutty then. Maybe.

Who knows? Maybe Swedes will enjoy being Americanized when they get there. Unfortunately, it isn't working too well in America right now. Country's broke, lots of people out of work, many with no health care, very high cost for higher education, tied down in two unwinnable wars, etc. Yeah, maybe Sweden will like being Americanized.

Moderate-style/Neo-conservative governments only ever work for corporate interest groups and the rich. There are no exceptions to this that I am aware of. They will continue to cut social programs while continuing to collect the taxes and give it all to corporate contractors who will run state and public services for a 30% margin over existing costs. At election time they will build a few hospitals and fix a few roads and...

It is an old, tired programme designed only to get them re-elected and their corporate supporters rich... that way they have soft places to land when they leave public office...

The Social Democrats may have lost focus over the years, but it was their programs and structures that made tiny, little Sweden one of the most secure, stable and rich countries in the world.

The biggest problem today is that there are several generations of voters now who have never known anything but 'the good Sweden' They watch all the American propaganda and get sucked-in.

The powers-that-be need to equalize their markets to maintain obscene levels of profit and that can only be done by clawing back in the wealthy, industrialized world.

The next 4 years are going to be a hell of a ride...

Wait until the rents go up next year. They are taking the law that puts a roof to landlords to increase rents.

Who is going to be able to pay the rent in Stockholm? We are going to collapse just like the US sooner or later with all this I Own and apartment (nope the bank does) and I will pay for it the rest of my life.

Prices for student apartments are just outreageous! 8500 for a 2 room apartment?and to increase next year... pfff.

Why do so many posts here connect the Moderate party and the future direction of Sweden with the US?

The Moderate party seem to be making their own path, a path twice chosen by the Swedish people. The US does not have a monopoly on social and political development, nor a monopoly on being right or wrong. The path Swedes have chosen for themselves is their own. Leave the US out of it, and let the Swedes get on with it in their own sensible way.

According to the people, the Moderates seem to be doing a very good job so far. It is good news the government and people are so in step with one another.
