Swedish neo-Nazi booted from local council

A Swedish neo-Nazi has lost his seat on a local council in Grästorp in western Sweden after authorities discovered that he does not live in the municipality.

According to authorities, Daniel Höglund, the leader of the neo-Nazi Party of Swedes (Svenskarnas parti, SVP), lives in nearby Vänersborg, 25 kilometres northwest of Grästorp, and was subsequently dismissed from the local council on Thursday evening.

"Is he relieved of his duties? Yes, he is," said Grästorp municipal director Ove Johansson.

Even if Höglund, who won his seat in the nationwide general elections on September 19th, wins an appeal in the decision to strip him of his seat, he will not return to the council.

Höglund did not attend many meetings before his residential status was uncovered. He had wanted Thursday's session to be postponed until his appeal was resolved, but the other council members refused.

Immediately after the decision to remove him from office, Höglund stood up and left his seat. As a consequence, the council will hold a by-election to replace Höglund.

In addition to Höglund's vacated position, the Sweden Democrats have not yet appointed a representative to Grästorp's local council.

In the 2010 general elections, the SVP won 102 votes, or 2.8 percent, in the Grästorp municipal elections in western Sweden's Västra Götaland county, giving the party its sole seat in any elected office in Sweden.

The Party of Swedes is described as a neo-Nazi party and views "the current chaos" as a result of democracy. It wishes to replace democracy with another governmental system.

The party is formerly known as the People's Front (Folkfronten) and was founded by members of the former National Socialist Front (Nationalsocialistisk front, NSF), of which Höglund was one of the two leaders, in November 2008.

At the time it dissolved, NSF was the largest neo-Nazi political party in Sweden. It became a political party on April 20th, 1999, the 110th birthday of Adolf Hitler.

The party's win in Grästorp was its first in the country. The last time an extreme-right white nationalist party held elected office in Sweden was nearly 70 years ago during World War Two.

We (okay not Swedes, but most everyone else) already fought this war (against Nazism) 70 years ago....why are we still dealing with it now?
16:50 December 17, 2010 by Nemesis
In that case, they should kick all other council members who do not live in there respective councils, of which there is quite a large amount.

We had comunism also in certain parts of europe, but some dumb western people still don't get and support socialistic/comunistic ideas and try to push them futher in to the goverment..One good example was summer time protest in Denmark.. It seems that some people are too boored.

Thanks Dobermann....

Just bugs me to see hatred (Nazism) pushed as an ideology after all the lives sacrificed to end it once already.

I think that most of us will become witnesses of some extreme nationalism in a whole europe quite soon, because somehowe people don't want to live quitely in peace and even WWI, WWII and all other wars and conflicts with europeans included did't teach anything at all. In WWII it was mostly jews and smarter aducated people as a problem, in the future it will be people with different skin colour or religion. And same story again and again and again.

I can only hope you are way off base on that conclusion...as I am sure you hope yourself.

I agree with Nemesis. If they are going to enforce this they they need to enforce it for everyone.

Also, VERY INTERESTING that we can comment on this story but not on the Muslim terrorism stories. The Local strikes again.

@ The Local

I have to agree with what other posters here have written with regards to the stories that 'The local' chooses to allow comments on.

A few days ago we were presented with a 'very fine' (sic) letter/statement from The Local about how from experience they've noticed that some stories they run concerning certain groups, receive far more 'negative' comments than others, and that 'The Local' felt they had a obligation to these groups not to allow comments concerning said story.

@ The Local, you are servile hypocites to allow this for one group but not the other. If you have not the courage to allow comments on ALL news stories (whom-so-ever they might concern), then you have no business reporting the news. It's not for you to determine the right of people to comment on the story, that's not for you to decide (obviously I'm not refering to hate speech and the such). Report the news, do not censor it. Let people say what they wish, if you would include a comment section at all.

As it stands now, you can rightly be referred to as a bunch of hypocrites.

@Njal...

Why are hassling TL for deciding to ban comments on sertain subject matter? TL is not a public service, it is a private company? They can do what they like with their website. If you don't like it just choose another news-site to read. Also, as you know this site is unfortunately heavily trolled by bigoted idiots. Such topic matter comments were a breeding ground for abusive comments and probably some that could be in breach of Swedish law in certain cases. TL has every right to decide not to allow comments on certain articles that would no doubt cause offense to many and also increase the likelyhood of legal action. I am sure it was not a decision that was taken likely. If you want to blame anyone, then blame the trolls.

BTW... it is not your 'right' to comment on news storys here on TL. Whatever gave you that impression? It is something that the TL 'allow' to its readers and thus they have the right to restrict or impose sanctions on when it can be used.
