Winter once again wreaks havoc across Sweden

Swedes were coping with yet another round of fierce winter weather on Sunday as a band of snow showers moved north across the country, sending cars off the roads and dumping up to 20 centimetres of fresh snow in its wake.

According to meteorology agency SMHI, heavy snow and strong winds are expected to continue into the evening along much of Sweden’s Baltic coast.

While the snow is expected to spread north into Norrland overnight, snow is also expected to continue for much of eastern Sweden.

“It’s going to continue snowing for the remainder of Sunday in the areas where it’s snowing now, mostly along the east coast, but it will diminish slightly and move northward during the evening and overnight into Monday,” said SMHI meteorologist Anna Hagenblad to the TT news agency.

The day’s snow has caused dozens of traffic accidents, with 26 being reported in the Stockholm-area alone.

“We’ve just been inundated with accidents in the last few hours,” said police spokesperson Ulf Lindgren, warning for difficult driving conditions on both large and small roads.

“It’s a good idea not to drive a car unless you have to. If you have to go out, drive safely, keep your distance and make sure you have good tyres.”

Plows have also been out in full force in a constant battle to keep Sweden’s roads passable.

"We’ve got our entire force out all the time, there’s nothing left to spare,” said National Transit Administration (Traffikverket) spokesperson Peter Behrman.

“Our contractors are out with everything they have and are doing their best, but because it’s been snowing so intensely for such a long period of time, there’s a lot to do.”

In Skåne in the south of Sweden there were problems removing snow and ice from rail switches, resulting in reduced service for local trains between Lund and Hyllie.

Road conditions in Västra Götaland in central Sweden remained extremely difficult on Sunday, especially on smaller roads from Vänersborg and northward, where the road authority warned drivers about possible drifting snow.

At the same time, SMHI forecasts heavy winds and continued snow in the area around Vänern and Vättern lakes in the next 24 hours.

Roads appeared to be worst, however, along the coast of Småland in southeastern Sweden and inland toward Jönköping.

Snow combined with strong winds has resulting in heavy drifting and white-out conditions, especially on the Baltic islands of Öland and Gotland.

“It’s been the worst near Västervik,” said P O Jansson of the Kalmar police, who added that, despite the poor driving conditions, no accidents had yet been reported.

While much of Europe struggled to deal with Sunday’s powerful winter storm, which caused delays at a number of airports, domestic air traffic in Sweden remained largely on schedule.

“This are going quite well in Sweden. It’s the international traffic that is having problems,” Helena Miller, a spokesperson for airport operator Svedavia, told TT around 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

According to Miller, the day’s snow has been “favourable”, falling straight and without any accompanying crosswinds.

“Then we can clear the runways quickly; we usually say that we’re best in the world at that at Arlanda,” she said.

Despite the quick work by crews at Arlanda, thousands of Swedes remained stranded in London or were unable to make schedule trips to the British capital on Sunday.

Speaking with the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper, Miller said there were “major problems” in London affecting 2,000 passengers in Sweden.

Scandinavian airline SAS is urging passengers scheduled to fly to London on Sunday to stay home and rebook their flights.

A number of departures from Frankfurt and Amsterdam have also been cancelled, according to SvD.

global warming is a hoax i guess

I think someone needs to do a study correlating global warming conferences to severe arctic weather. There seems to be a relationship. The fact that agenda driven people have changed the language from 'global warming' to 'climate change' is highly suspect. Even they see it.

@svenskamerikansk

The "change of language" is not suspicious. This has more to do with people misunderstanding the term "global warming". The global warming is causing climate shifts. And this is going on since day 1 of the planet, where the temperature also rose, but then only due to natural causes. Now we have on top of the natural causes, also manmade causes, which accelerates the global warming effect a bit. It will all stabilise again. It's what mother earth has been doing for thousands of years, and will continue to do so long after you and I are dust.

its called the Climate Change and it will cause more extreme weather events not necessarily warmer weather,, global warming is part of the dilemma

Re climate conferences: meetings such as the one in Cancun earlier this month have taken place every year since 1995 (a year after the 1992 UN climate treaty entered into force). And just to bust a popular myth, they don't all take place in warm 'exotic' places. Since 1995 they've been in Berlin, Geneva, Kyoto, Buenos Aires, Bonn, The Hague, Marrakesh, Delhi, Milan, Buenos Aires, Montreal, Nairobi, Bali, Poznan, Copenhagen, Cancun. Next year is Durban, the year after either South Korea or Qatar. In principle the conferences rotate according to the UN regions, and countries offering to host the conference decide themselves on the venue.

Re change in language: the words 'climate change' have been in official use since at least the mid 1980s. The IPCC was set up in 1988; the UNFCCC (the UN climate treaty) was agreed in 1992. I leave it to you to google the acronyms. The academic journal Climatic Change was launched in the early 1970s. The words 'global warming' have been in wider use in North America, and not only is the term scientifically problematic, it also leads to misunderstandings as shown above.

Re hoax (i.e. it isn't getting warmer): have a look at this graph, or any other graph published by official monitoring programmes and institutes: http://www.wissenslogs.de/wblogs/gallery/16/2010_giss_noaa.jpg

If you're really curious and/or confused about the science of climate change then there are several good sources I can refer you to. But if you prefer to have strong opinions about things you have no knowledge about, then feel free to keep polarising the debate, insulting people and appearing stupid.

Climate Change fans need to study the sun whole lot more - and how they can micromanage and dictate other people's lifestyles a whole lot less. But that would mean abandoning a political agenda and taking the scientific method seriously. Phooey on that ! Leaps of faith that can bring power and money are much, much more exciting.

The religion of climate change is not to be questioned no matter how idiotic it is.

@svenskamerikansk

If you really think that there aren't thousands of scientists all over the world studying every minute aspect of the sun, then that exposes your ignorance in this area. I can assure you that there is no conspiracy among climate scientists to "micromanage and dictate other people's lifestyles". It's the political agenda of conservatives, who live in mortal fear that their irresponsible behaviors might be curtailed for the good of everyone, that is driving their opposition to what good climate science is reporting and predicting. You should be ashamed to place your descendants at such mortal risk for your selfish agenda!

@anticommie "The religion of climate change is not to be questioned no matter how idiotic it is."

....or you will be brought before the inquisition for your heresy!

Funny how the more things change, the more things stay the same.

Let's not waste our time with the futile attempt of knocking each other; we have sufficient from MSM brainwashing and Frankenstein scientist with agendas, bank accounts and puppet masters.

Some pertinent points:

*) The work of Henrik Svensmark.

*) The work of probably the first climatologist, before such a thing existed, is a Canadian scientist with phds from both the UK and Canada with over thirty years experience.

*) historical evidence of temperatures prior to the hallowed 1800 chart. i.e. during the middle ages sub-tropical temperatures in the very north of Europe. Documented in agricultural historical documentation.

*) The elephant in the room above C02 loved by trees and the fact that the oceans produce more C02 than anything; unnecessary proliferation of chemical toxins unleashed upon the earth.

*) Government funded agencies, NGOs and other organisations hosted, financed and run by an assorted bunch of very interesting individuals have been proven time and time again to be as reliable as an Alzheimer sufferer.

The 'climate agenda' has the hallmarks as a side tracking exercise for big wealth transfer and control spinner. Then again, just when you think you have things figured out, the players change the game and the rules.

@Alohart

I didn't say scientists, I said 'Climate change fans'. Pay attention! I was not talking about serious scientists at all. It's Climate change fans that are ignoring what the scientists are learning about solar cycles and their impact on our climate.

Oh look! It's a climate change p!ssing contest!

'It's the sun', 'climate's changed before', 'it's the coldest winter on record', 'it's a conspiracy'...

If you're at all interested, lux.veritas, svenskamerikansk and others, then have a look at what science says about 131 well-rehearsed skeptical arguments, including the ones you've raised here: http://www.skepticalscience.com/argument.php .

If you are indeed interested in scientific progress, then please don't continue to sow doubt by repeating claims that have been invalidated by now. The claims may well have been based on valid questions once, but climate science has done its job of falsifying hypotheses and moved on to other questions.

Yes, other questions remain, but none of these undermine the theory outlined by physicists in the 19th century that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to warming. Without any value judgements, without any economic interests, without any computer models. Just plain physics.

One of these scientists was the Swede Svante Arrhenius, who published a paper entitled 'On the Influence of Carbonic Acid in the Air upon the Temperature of the Ground' back in 1896 (http://www.rsc.org/images/Arrhenius1896_tcm18-173546.pdf). It's fascinating reading!

I've been driving around the Stockholm area all day and I haven't seen 1 snow plough and I was just thinking what a bunch of lazy Swedes but then I read this article - if they are paying these people they are being riped off

I think I have it now. If it's really hot somewhere, it's global warming/climate change and people are responsible.

If it's really cold somwhere, it's global warming/cimate change and people are responsible.

If it's really dry somewhere, it's global warming/climate change and people are responsible.

If it's really wet somewhere, it global warming/climate change and people are responsible.

Apparently none of the above ever happened until people started burning fossil fuels.

Hey, this is real science, right?

Climate change has been a part of earth history for billions of years; we happen to be living at a time when the elements and atmosphere allow our kind to exist. This Garden of Eden is our only chance for our life. We don't know how long it will sustain us; but our history is terms of earth time are very short. The earth could go on for billions of more years before our sun winds down and eventually burns itself out. By then all life on earth will have ended. Even without climate change human life is endangered - and in centuries to come Earth may only support different forms of life, not ours. So the question is how to manage our Garden of Eden so that it can sustain us for as long as possible. Consider this - "The last super volcano to erupt was 74,000 years ago. It created a global catastrophe that blocked out the sun, causing the temperature to plummet, and reducing the population on Earth to just a few thousand people." We are their descendants and lucky to be here.
