Divine right monarchies have no business existing in the modern world. They perpetuate an obsolete order.
After Victoria's wedding I asked my wife how long she thought it would be before extremist feminists began a crusade for the King's abdication. She laughed and said she hadn't thought about it, but probably not long.
She was right--not long. I'm convinced the scandal books about the King and Queen were all set up ahead of time for the express purpose of crowning Victoria. First the books, press about the books, and now polls to put pressure on. The king should give them a finger salute and life his life as he wishes. A real journalist should dig into that story. Are there any in Sweden?
King Karl Gustav is a wonderful King and Sweden should feel lucky to have him. His indescretions are not unusual for anyone in Sweden, much less royalty. Was it Gustav Vasa who fathered 79 bastard children? One of them anyway. But without royalty there would be not one good reason to visit England or any country with a monarch.
Swedes (mostly women) want Victoria because she has fairy-tale beauty and it would be good for tabloid sales which women are so fond of reading -everywhere. Intellectually, she is a dumb female in the mold of Jackie Kennedy.
By-the-way, "most Swedes" means the press.
Even if you do not like them, the people did elect them originally. They wanted royalty after a sort - and boy, did they get it! Are you saying Sweden needs one like them?
In my humble opinion, ladies who are interested in seeing more women in power, should start new companies, take MBA courses, work harder in their current jobs and attend more engineering courses instead of English and Swedish literature. AND NO, political power does not come from inviting Julian Assange to your apartment and then suing him.
You are correct they were elected by the people (many were the only candidate allowed on the ballot). Sweden does have a democracy. The monarch is only a tradition and it's a good tradition. I have visited Sweden 10 times to enjoy your traditions.
No one should have to live in a hell hole country, where the people have no real freedoms.
It seems that Europeans criticize America and Americans, we criticize Europe but we rarely criticize the real troubled areas of the world. We are free and we should be pointing our finger at the real human oppressor nations.
Forget landscape, architecture, cuisine, visual arts, night life, and the people. What people want to see is some geezers with funny hats. What is wrong with you???
That's the dumbest statement of the day!
latest terrorist act committed by a Swedish immigrant.Be very careful and the
Swedish Government must be security conscious at all time and not be too petty about that racist problem. As for the King,he and the Royal Instituition is the real
symbol of Unity to Sweden for now and for the future.
The article makes a good point...maybe in the next 10 years.
According to the Swedish group Rublikanska förneing, "one serious restriction of the Swedish democracy still remains, a historical remainder unacceptable to any modern democratic society - the monarchy... The individuals who are born into the royal family and possess the right to the thrown are denied the foundational right to govern their own lives..."
"Vi i Republikanska Föreningen tycker att monarki är ett förlegat och odemokratiskt system. Vi vill i stället införa republik i Sverige, så att vårt land blir en demokrati fullt ut..."
"Forget landscape, architecture, cuisine, visual arts, night life, and the people. What people want to see is some geezers with funny hats. What is wrong with you???"
If it was not for royals and royalty there would be nothing to see. The only green spaces in London, are the palaces, royal parks, etc. England for English cuisine! Hah. Art, of course, reached its zenith under royal tutelage and patronage. If you look in the Hermitage and the Kremlin armory, you will see that almost all of it comes from non-Russian artists. The Imperial family knew beauty when it saw it. The same for the Sanish and Italians. The Pope is a special kind of royaly in himself. What would the art world be like today without it and its magnifgicent art, churches, abbeys, etc that were created b7y its order and patronage. I am not the idiot , and there is nothing wrong with me. You are merely blind.
Two thirds of Swedes want the king to abdicate? I doubt it, somehow. Two thirds of those questioned, maybe.
And what was Aftonbladet trying to achieve. anyway? They're not part of the Newscorp empire, are they? Rupert Murdoch is notorious for his puppeteering attempts to interfere in the affairs of other countries. Or is it that they are trying to line themselves up for a Newscorp takeover?
