Dalai Lama to preach in Swedish church

Published: 30 Dec 10 13:15 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/31162/20101230/

Tibetan Buddhism's highest leader, the Dalai Lama, is set to visit Sweden in April and has been booked in to take part in a service in Lund Cathedral in southern Sweden, according to a report in the Church of Sweden newspaper Kyrkans Tidning.

The visit is planned for April 15th-17th and will include stops in Lund and Stockholm, and could well be the last visit by the current Dalai Lama to Sweden after his announcement that he plans to retire to his home in Dharamsala, India.

The Lama has been invited to Sweden by the charitable organisation Individuell Människöhjälp (IM) whose chairperson, Håkan E Wilhelmsson, is also the dean of Lund Cathedral.

"He is one of the people who the whole worl respects as a spokesperson for the whole of humankind," Wilhelmsson told the newspaper. "It is a great pleasure for us in Sweden to receive him."

Wilhelmsson told the Christian daily Dagen that he sees no problem in a Buddhist leader taking part in a protestant church service.

"Everyone, regardless of religious or political beliefs, looks up to him... In every continent there are buildings for people to seek something beyond themselves, in Sweden it is the churches, in other parts of the world, other religious houses," he said.

IM has had a long cooperation with the Dalai Lama, ever since they offered him support after his flight from Tibet after the invasion by Chinese forces in the end of the 1950s.

What is ignored on the part of the media is the fact that the peasants were supporting thousands of non-producing religious free loaders. They couldn't get rid of these scum fast enough except that the Chinese government helped.
13:58 December 30, 2010 by Syftfel
If Sweden allows the Dalai Lama to speak, Sweden will suffer the wrath of the Chinese communists. I predict that the event will be canxd.
14:00 December 30, 2010 by Dr. Dillner
This Wilhelmsson person has no respect for Christianity if he allows a Buddhist to "preach" in his church. Now, don't get me wrong, I have heard the Dalai Lama speak, and he is man of wisdom and peace, and I applaud what he is trying to accomplish in this world. BUT, he is NOT a Christian and what should be preached in a Christian Church is the Gospel, not Buddhism -- they are different religions and both have their separate place in this world of ours.

Dr Dillner,

I understand your frustration, but where I think you are going wrong is in thinking a church is church is a church. This is not true. There are churches and then there are political correctness centers that call themselves churches.

I believe that this was identified as the case as early as Timothy 1 and 2.

Why on earth is he speaking in a christian church? Aren´t there any buddhist templels or for that matter any arenas he could speak in? Doesnt make sense to me!
18:08 December 30, 2010 by orx
Can only agree with the previous comment. From my experience of Svenska Kyrkan in general (with the notable exception of S:a Klara in Stockholm), there isn't very much real Gospel preached anywhere in the denomination. There are plenty of "nice" thoughts expressed on a regular basis, but if we're talking about the Gospel, well enough said..... My guess is there won't be very many believers listening to the D/L and the SK in Lund has already shown the world where it stands apropos the foregoing. I find it distasteful, too, but let's get on with thanking God for giving us Jesus, and let them do their thing. They'll need to account to the LORD someday. he's the judge, not we!

A pretty convenient way of shutting the "other side" up, don't you think? Thus denying them that freedom of speech you hold in high regard... the irony.

If a church is letting someone of another religion speak, then surely it is for other reasons (in this case political - annoying Beijing)? It is the ultimate in treachery to your God!

Would someone like to tell Håkan E Wilhelmsson that "the whole world" does not respect the Dalai Lama "as a spokesperson for the whole of humankind", and not "everyone, regardless of religious or political beliefs, looks up to him". For someone to make such gullible statements, they've cancelled their credibility from the start. Perhaps Håkan should get out more.

By the way, it may come as a surprise to very progressive Sweden that the Dalai Lama is on the record as opposing homosexuality. I wonder how that ties in with the "spokesperson for the whole of humankind" schtick, and your liberal attitudes otherwise?
22:16 December 30, 2010 by Ravioli
If a Buddhist wants to come to Sweden that's fine. Better the Dali Lama than some hate-preaching cleric from you-know-where. The more Buddhists in Sweden, the better.

I'll gladly take Buddah over... You know,,, The so called "religion of peace" run by those "Swedes" lol
00:07 December 31, 2010 by mojofat
I love it when the religious sheeple argue over which phoney baloney cult gets "preached" in one building over another...hahaha... you crack me up! "He can't preach in a *christian* church...he's buddhist!" Yes, the zombie Jesus' head must be spinning around at the thought of that! Think of the recruiting opportunity though! Throw him into one of those dunking baths you have and convert him...by force if necessary (after all, christians have some experience with that)...imagine the propaganda opportunity at having the dalai lama becoming christian! Yeah!!

Maybe if the Chinese government kicks up a stink the Dalai Lama will be charged with some obscure sex crime get locked up and deported to Beijing.

I'm surprised the feminist are allowing this, in addition to his opposition to homosexuality his views regarding women are extremely archaic. Anyway, it does seem odd that he is giving a talk in a church, as Buddhism is a religion and different from the church he is speaking in.

No sensible reading of my post at #4 deprives anyone of their right to free speech.

Hallooooo ahhhhh! As a buddhist , I don't quite agree with all those who are so *flicker* hearted comments. I am sure Dalai Lama will never try to preach Buddhism in the church. Or try to brainwash any Christian. Most probably he will speak on how a person can obtain joy, happiness and peace. A hurrah to the Chairperson of the church for his openess. So all you who are so narrow minded.

If you are scare of the communist, you better be more scare of the muslim extremist who bombed our country just because of some dumb artist painting Mohammad with a dog or pig face. Such a dumb artist, you people say freedom of speech and expression but dumb enough to put us all in danger of the terrorists.

As Buddhism never takes arms against any other faith, and respects the right of all to follow their own faith, I do not understand the wrath of Christian posters opposed to the Dalai Lama speaking to a Christian congregation.

Maybe he will be able to show them the way to self enlightenment and how to achieve a good karma.
16:55 December 31, 2010 by izbz
@Rick Methven

Totally agree with u. Actually like the Dalai once said,'Buddism id not a religion but it is a way of life' Life is like a circle, what one does will eventually catch up with him. And a person should not think he is ahead of others. Just draw a circle and two men on each side of the circle. Can we really tell who is behind who?

Of course Christians will say Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. I respect what you believe in, to believe in something is better than believing in nothing. That goes for all religions and beliefs.

I think he Swedish Church has fallen so far from the teachings of Lutheranism in particular and Chistianity in general that people would be right to throw their Pastors out, just like they threw out the Pope's Priests, during the Reformation.

Time for a new generation to reclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, and if some old fakirs need to find new employment so be it. No Religion lets another Religion preach in it's house of Worship.

Post #19 "As Buddhism never takes arms against any other faith, and respects the right of all to follow their own faith,"

Google Sri Lanka Buddhist and Hindi... For example:

Modern Conflicts in Sri Lanka... Sri Lanka is a predominantly Buddhist country and largely anti-Hindu. The Sri Lankan constitution gives Buddhists a privileged place in society, relegating Hindus to second-class citizenship. Sri Lankan Buddhists think of Sri Lanka as "Buddha's country," even though Buddhists and Hindus have struggled over Sri Lanka since the second century B.C. / http://www.ehow.com/about_5480700_there-conflict-between-hindus-buddhists.html

You confuse the actions of People rather than religion.

Buddhism is a way of life a philosophy rather than a religion. belief in a deity is optional in Buddhism

Mojofat hit the nail on the head! I love it.

As for Tibet, I do have a few words of skeptical wisdom, from the Great Brian Dunning. (http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4111)

"Advocates of a free Tibet make a long list of charges against Chinese oppression, largely centered upon a loss of rights and freedom. This claim makes anyone familiar with Tibetan history cough up their coffee. The only people who lost any rights under Chinese rule are Tibet's former ruling class, themselves guilty of cruelty and oppression of a magnitude that not even China can conceive. The vast majority of Tibetans, some 90% of whom were serfs, have enjoyed a relative level of freedom unheard of in their culture. Until 1950 when the Chinese put a stop to it, 90% of Tibetans had no rights at all. They were freely traded and sold. They were subject to the worst type of punishments from their lords, including gouging out of eyes; cutting off hands, feet, tongues, noses, or lips; and a dozen horrible forms of execution."

"Furthermore, the people shouting loudest about freeing Tibet don't seem to be aware that that's not even what the Dalai Lama wants from China. He's not seeking full independence, Nepal style; rather he would like to achieve the same status as Hong Kong, which is a "special administrative region". This would give them full economic benefits without having to become a regular province, something along the lines of a US territory. So here's a note to all the Hollywood celebrities: If you really want to support the Dalai Lama, ditch your "Free Tibet" signs and paint some up that say "Change Tibet from an Autonomous Region to a Special Administrative Region". It's not as good of a sound bite, and it's a change that would have little practical impact on Tibetans; but it would allow the Dalai Lama to return to his aristocratic lifestyle and his 1000 room palace at Potala.

So to all those who so heatedly call for the freeing of Tibet, first consider whether you have the expertise to know whether Tibet is best served as an autonomous region or as a special administrative region. Understand exactly what implications such a change may have upon the economics and the daily lives of its citizens, or maybe even entertain the possibility that it's a decision best left to Tibetans."

HowSwedeitis,

I did not take the time to read your long and boring post about Tibet...

mojofat

Of course were sheep, I am sheep for Christ, while you blindly follow NWO.

Concerning Buddhism

I think its a way of life, like the Buddhists say, I let people of a religious group speak on their religion. I believe Dalai Lama will most likely try to give a speech about some things Christians and Buddhist agree upon (some spiritual concepts)

As an adamant follower of Christ, you never know what kind of work Christ is doing so maybe Dalai Lama can be converted. I see why Christians consume such a small percent of Sweden.

As for Liberals-- Homosexuality is against nature, not just religions, its not condemned by religions for no reason. People realize its wrong. And if you don't know wrong from right, your a blessed man for in you no sin can be found!

You been puffing some magic weed for the New Year?
13:54 January 2, 2011 by HowSwedeitis
@bako.ohanyan:

You are incorrect.

Homosexual behavior in animals refers to the documented evidence of homosexual, bisexual and transgender behavior in animals. Such behaviors include sex, courtship, affection, pair bonding, and parenting among same sex animals. A 1999 review by researcher Bruce Bagemihl shows that homosexual behavior has been observed in close to 1,500 species.

Furthermore, homosexuality in animals was cited in the United States Supreme Court's decision in Lawrence v. Texas which struck down the sodomy laws of 14 states.
