A 51-year-old man from Umeå in northern Sweden was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated drug crimes involving 4 kilogrammes of opium, local media reported on Friday.

The prosecution had pushed for a 14-year prison sentence, but the man demonstrated extraordinary candor during the investigation of the crime, newspaper Västerbottens Folkblad reported on Friday.

Police were able to solve the crime thanks to the man's cooperation. As a result, Umeå district court gave him a shorter sentence.

The man was originally arrested for being under the influence of narcotics last month. Police later found several grams of opium in his home, but he tipped them off about a lot more under the sink, where they found two packages of the drug weighing a total of kilogramme.

The man also revealed that he regularly buys and sells opium to customers in Umeå, the report said. In addition, police found a bag in the apartment with 712,000 kronor ($100,000).

Based on the amount of money in the bag and the street price of opium, the prosecution concluded that the man had sold three kilogrammes of the drug, a judgment shared by the district court, the report said.

At the trial on December 29th, the man said that he has never engaged in the sale of drugs and claimed that he was keeping the recovered funds for another person. He added that he does not smoke opium himself due to medical reasons, the newspaper reported late last year.

Nice to know that's the international excuse.

10 years is pretty low.

2 years for rape

7 years for murder

10 years for drugs

yup, exellent order priorities!
00:05 January 9, 2011 by Nemesis
@ andy_so,

Precisely.

Rapists and paedophiles should be at minimum jailed until they die of natural causes.
02:10 January 9, 2011 by Ravioli
Sweden's judicial system continues to boggle the mind. @andyso- I don't know the averages but 7 years for murder seems like pretty high. Nonetheless, you are totally right about their backwards priorities.

Shouldn't even be in jail. All drugs should be decriminalised. Why should the government care what I put into my own body?

10 years for selling a plant that grows wild in nature. Perfectly reasonable.
14:32 January 9, 2011 by locaxy
Reform is long overdue!

I'm ashamed that my tax money is used to harass people for possessing plants!
15:52 January 9, 2011 by Arturio
10 years for green finger is too much !!!

If in Sweden there was a proportion of the sentence then for murder they should fry condemneds in a chair

How many lives did this idit destroy, isn't that the real story.
22:13 January 9, 2011 by ppaf
@wenddiver

No, the real question is what mojofat, locaxy and Arturio mentioned. Why would tax money be used to harass people like this one, and also drug users.

If you feel this is a disease, try and help people,if you think it is simply ok, stop arresting people, if you think it is a crime, grow up and let consenting adults do what they feel like with their own bodies.

PPaf- Sorry I worked in a Drug Detox unit as a Counselor for a couple years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Metropolitain Correctional Center when I was with the Department of Justice. I didn't know that enlightened experts like yourself knew so much about this subject.

I was probably wrong that these lives were ruined by drugs. Most were serving about 35 to Life, not for the drugs, but the trouble the junkies got into while on drugs. Luckily a lot of your junkie users had contracted aids, which in the 1990s meant a life sentence wasn't much at all.

Loved the stories the women told about being sexually trafficed and stealing from their families for their boyfriends habits, real ha, ha funny stuff dealers cause to get their money. Sons killing Fathers, children beating up old ladies for their grocerie money. Yah you are very cool. Do us all a favor and go use a dirty needle somewhere. Any boody hooking somebody on this garbage should pay with their life , for the life they took.

Your either part of the problem or part of the solution.

@seagull:- they care because it costs them & the taxpayer money, to clean up after all the deaths caused by Heroin abuse
16:57 January 10, 2011 by wenddiver
@flintis- Good point. Not to mention that people on hard drugs have a tendency to go on public assistance and drain off funds collected to assist the legitamately poor.

I think the major reason though is the violence associated with hard drug use. Lets not forget that cool dudes that can do anything with their body like Seagull and ppaf have a tendency to not tell the opposite sex that they are junkies when they meet people initually, so intravenous drug aids rapidly becomes sexually transmitted AIDs. Junkies need a lot of new friends and sexual partners, because the old ones tend to toss them out when they start lieing to them, tealing from them and giving them diseases. Of course those are facts and we wuldn't want cold hard reality to stare us in the face and tell us what we can and can't do with our bodies.

What good parent wouldn't want his kid to grow up and have a promising life as a junkie! (Sarcasm)
