Swedish 'indoor grill party' goes wrong

The emergency services were called to a house in Bandhagen, south of Stockholm late on Saturday evening, when several people were left unconscious after lighting a barbeque indoors.

The alarm call triggered feverish activity as police, emergency services and ten ambulances rushed to the scene.

According to the police, ten people were taken to hospitals in and around Stockholm, although there were no reports of life threatening injuries.

“They had been suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and many had been unconscious but they had come round by the time they were taken to hospital,” said Mari Olofsson, police communications manager for Stockholm county.

At least two of the ten taken to hospital were children.

Carbon monoxide is a very poisonous gas, which is particularly dangerous because it has no colour, odour or taste.

The emergency services carried out a thorough ventilation of the entire building as soon as they arrived.

Meanwhile those responsible were reported for criminal negligence.

12:41 January 16, 2011 by johnny1939
to Byke. Indoor fireworks were already done circa 50 years ago by some drunken students in stockholm...I know.....

Grilling indoors, that is really amazing. I guess they did not have a balcony. If chldren were not involved it would have been a funny story.

The family were immigrants from Ethiopia. Perhaps they're used to having a hole in the roof for smoke.
21:14 January 16, 2011 by dizzymoe33
Same thing happens here in the States when we get people from Mexico during the Winter months they bring inside the BBQ's to keep warm and then they all end up dieing from the carbonmonixide poisioning. Stupid
01:05 January 17, 2011 by goprint
I think that that was stupid.
10:04 January 17, 2011 by flintis

I think this qualifies for the "Darwin Awards" nearly made it section!!!!
13:56 January 17, 2011 by KungsholmenGuy
I met a woman in the US who had lost her husband and son because they grilled food outdoors, then brought the grill into their camper trailer when it started to rain. The charcoal in the grill was no longer hot, but it continued to give off carbon monoxide, enough to kill them. She is now lobbying to have warnings placed on bags of charcoal. No Darwin awards sould be awarded here, because there is not a lot of awareness of this, so this could happen to almost anyone.
11:44 January 18, 2011 by JulieLou40
@ kungsholmen guy I think you're wrong, and the other comments prove you are wrong. You'd have to be a real dimwit to bring a bbq indoors.
12:55 January 18, 2011 by zooeden
S T U P I D, plain and simple, stupidity kills...
13:07 January 18, 2011 by DJECKY
Well its very strange for some people like me,to hear that people get, intoxicated after inhalling smook from charcoal,,But it depends the type of wood where the charcaol is gotten.

I grew with my grand Mother,s kitchen where we were sleeping under heavily densed smook-locked room.this is where seeds where being tried-stored for next seasons planting.

and no health harzad nor death has ever been registered from the practice.

May be thats why some of us from that part of the world are very strong. The practice is still being carried on uptill now and will be forever.

All the same human being are not the same.(A tree can never be bended when it grows old).
05:23 January 19, 2011 by bow290
LOL! DJecky... mate the tree may not bend but it will sway and snap!

and the stupid swed comments??? really? look at who's pointing the finger here and where they're from hey!? get off ur high horse and take a look at something dumb one of ur country men have recently done!

who can blame em 4 wanting to have a BBQ? just need to rethink it next time!

and Byke? mate haven't u eva seen indoor fireworks!?

@JulieLou40 although you are right, Americans need warnings on everything. Example: Warning this coffee is hot and you might burn your mouth. My neighbour's cousin's friend walked off a cliff in the US and died. Now his family is lobbying to have a warning on every cliff in US saying "Warning if you walk off this cliff you may die" so that other Americans become sufficiently well-informed of the potential danger.
