UN slams Sweden over Iraqi deportations

The UN refugee agency on Tuesday expressed strong concern at reports that Sweden plans to sent 25 Iraqis back to Baghdad despite repeated advice that conditions are unsafe there.

Melissa Fleming, a spokeswoman for the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) pointed out that a Christian Iraqi who was deported last October was being readmitted to Sweden after he fled again following an attack.

"The UNHCR is very concerned that Sweden plans to send around 25 Iraqis back to Baghdad tomorrow," she told journalists.

"We understand that a number of those scheduled for return belong to religious and ethnic groups targeted by violence in Iraq," she added.

Fleming reiterated that the UNHCR believed they were entitled to protection as refugees, especially with the recent deterioration of conditions for minorities in Iraq.

Although she did not specifically refer to the incidents, sectarian violence has intensified in Iraq in recent weeks especially with a wave of attacks on Christians.

"We are troubled that our advice, including on the situations of minorities in Iraq, is not sufficiently taken into account by Sweden when reviewing negative decisions that were made in 2008 and 2009," Fleming said.

Swedish authorities said Tuesday that about 70 people were detained when police broke up a protest against the deportation of Iraqis near the southwestern city of Gothenburg.

Later in the day, Swedish migration minister Tobias Billström rejected the UN’s criticism, as well as complaints from human rights group Amnesty International.

“This is nothing new. These are things that Amnesty has said on several occasions. It’s important to remember that we have a system in Sweden based on the rule of law which is involves authorities and courts hearing every individual case,” he told the TT news agency.

The UN refugee agency has over the past year repeatedly warned Britain and several Nordic nations not to send Iraqis back to central parts of Iraq because of persistent violence there.

Can we do the same in England?

Slough and Birmingham need to be deported LOL
19:38 January 18, 2011 by Sweetdishgurl
Why do they have to come to Sweden ONLY? Can they not go to Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, France? No, because they will not accept them. But the UN says nothing about that. Only Sweden is stupid enough to take more refugees in to the country and when they actually realize they CAN say NO they get a bunch of bad press about it. Please find another country to destroy, Sweden is already FOBAR. The southern city of Malmö is already "little Baghdad'. If you are going to accept refugees can it not be the "good" ones. Why only the thugs and pimps? Being half Swedish and half Arabic I am a product of Sweden but I am also sad and sickened by the way the country has gone down the drain. I speak perfect Swedish, work, pay taxes and contribute in a positive way-as does my whole family. Stop letting more refugees in and focus on the people that are already there. Spread the refugees around Europe, not just Sweden.

Where is Swedn?
23:59 January 18, 2011 by Njal
As has been pointed out in the re-lated thread, these guys are 'economic' refugees. If they followed procedure, they would be in Turkey or whichever the country they had come upon first. Which in this case is not Sweden.

These people could not abuse the system if they were not allowed to.
00:11 January 19, 2011 by mba0021
Why were these refugees accepted then?
00:18 January 19, 2011 by Njal
Who knows? Or at least I don't. Perhaps because Sweden's immigration policy is very broken.
00:29 January 19, 2011 by theTRUTH4u
this is GOOD!

finally the government is standing up and take responsibility for some wrong decisions made.

UN, WHO or Amensty International are not "the boss" of Sweden!

Time to go home. MANY Swedes are really sick and tired of supporting trash with our taxmoney. We can spend that much better than on sympathy for religious victims!

I know of "Rosengards staden" in Malmo! This is outrageous! These small kids are raised to throw stones at cars driving by and the fire trucks and police are being attacked when they go into the area.

This is the slum of Malmo and it has grown out of proportions.

THIS is an area that must be cleaned up!

Send them home in airplane loads! One way ticket should be that last tax money we spend on these guys that refuse to work and just create drug wars.

wish america would do this.

if these iraqies loves sweden so much - how about writing "we love sweden" in swedish....!! they me more welcome if learn the language.
05:46 January 19, 2011 by Zero
If Sweden was a war zone, do you think Saudi Arabia or Egypt would take in 100,000 Swedes and let them build churches and not learn arabic, and pay their way?
08:15 January 19, 2011 by helveeta
Exactly Arturo! As an American who attended SFI for a year, I NEVER met an Iraqi or any foreign person who "loves Sweden." As a matter of fact, every single person I met in my school would approach me regularly and say, "Why did you come to Sweden? I hate it here, it's cold. I want to go to America." Seeing that sign held up by those guys makes me laugh, who do they think they're fooling?
08:20 January 19, 2011 by karex
There must be more to this story than is stated. It is so easy to get into Sweden with a sob story. If refugees were denied, there may be very good grounds which the authorities declined to comment on. How many terrorists get into western countries under the guise of a sob story?
09:23 January 19, 2011 by Ravioli
And I mean this with all sincerity.....F the UN. Sweden has given up its entire public safety and security, not to mention it's entire freaking future by taking in countless Iraqis in order to make the UN happy (among other mind-boggling reasons) and the UN gets its panties in a bunch over 25 Iraqis being sent back??

Now I agree that Christians or other non-Muslim applicants should be given special consideration since we all know how tolerant Muslims are of other religions, cultures, lifestyles, etc.
01:33 January 20, 2011 by itzsmz
@helveeta

on the contrary, i know many foreigners who profess their love for sweden. it's heaven for journalism, feminism, just to name a few.

anyway these religious conflicts are sickening. some hundreds of years ago, christians were marginalised and they resort to suicide bombings. now the muslims. can't they just get a life?

Heaven forbid Sweden should exercise sovereignty and look out for the integrity of it's borders and citizenship.. This is none of the UN's business.
04:37 January 21, 2011 by theTRUTH4u
When is the next busload of 100 going?

Time to go home!

By the way - make sure you tear down your stupid moscs before you go!

So long and good riddance : )
04:15 January 30, 2011 by dan_sparrow
i think the ones who has the responsability in this case are those who started the war in irak

USA, UK, SPAIN AND OTHERS...

we should send them to those countries instead...
