Murder suspect: 'the noise made me do it'

Published: 21 Jan 11 18:07 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/31574/20110121/

A 39-year-old man from Karlskrona in southern Sweden who admitted to stabbing his neighbour to death blamed the attack on the incessant noise coming from the victim's flat.

The suspect was remanded in custody by the Blekinge district court on Friday on suspicions of having murdered his 19-year-old neighbour in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A constant creaky noise from the neighbour's apartment is the only explanation the 39-year-old suspect has provided investigators as to why he attacked his neighbour.

According to a statement released by prosecutor Pernilla Åström, the man said he felt bothered by the noise and armed himself with a large knife before ringing the bell on his neighbour’s door.

He then allegedly stabbed the 19-year-old victim repeatedly. The young man later died in the building’s stairwell from his injuries.

After the stabbing, the 39-year-old made his way to the Blekinge Institute of Technology, where he worked. He then sent an email to the local Sydöstran newspaper explaining what he had done and where he was.

He requested that someone from the newspaper alert the police.

But no one from the Sydöstran’s editorial offices read the email until after the 39-year-old had already been spotted by another employee at the university, who in turn called police.

The man, who had barricaded himself in a room at the university, was later arrested without incident and subsequently admitted to killing the 19-year-old.

At Friday’s remand hearing, the court also ordered the man undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

“I don’t want to pass judgment on my client’s mental status. Obviously, one doesn’t feel well when something like this happens, just like everyone else involved,” the 39-year-old’s attorney, Christer Holmqvist, told the local Blekinge Läns Tidning (BLT) newspaper after Friday’s hearing.

Prosecutors hope to bring formal charges against the man by February 20th.

When a 39 year looses restrain and attacks someone young enough to be his son, then he is a foolish fella.

He ought to know better what is called youthful exuberance has someone who has passed that stage himself.
22:47 January 21, 2011 by Nilspet
It seems that the 39-y-o lost his mind completely but maybe he was disturbed constantly that he could not sleep for weeks and then got mad?

AHH GOOD :P at least Karlskrona is in the news :P LOL. TO ALL OF YOU WHO DON't KNOW WHERE AND WHAT IS KARLSKRONA, well its a city where I study :D. I am tired of people asking me in Stockholm... "Karlskrona and Ronneby? its in Sweden?"
00:12 January 22, 2011 by kcussmilsum
This article has perfect timing, as my neighbor was complaining about my new bio system sub-woofer, in a roundabout sort-of-way, that is to say without actually telling me to turn it down, He asked Me on several occasions where my speakers were placed and what my crossover is set too - Very Swedish of Him.

It's set to THX certification specs, and I like it that way : )

Needless to say, I extended to standard sub-standard Svensk courtesy, and continue to ignore Him to this day.

However, He does belong to a pistol club, and is a really good shot with a 357...

...Hmmm, Perhaps I should re-think this again....

Nope, Not a chance in hell : )

I hope sure hope he likes DTS, I've got 3000+ DVD & Blu-ray Disc to watch. lol

Never disturb a swede?

Karlskrona is an old naval port. Parts of it a UNESCO World Heritage. The city and the surrounding archipelago is one of my favorite parts of Sweden.
09:55 January 22, 2011 by Scots
kcussmilsum: how dare you have so little respect for your neighbours?????? hope the same comes your way!!!!!! How nasty of you to keep on disturbing him when he already complained, how can people have so little respect nowadays

He should call the cops on you every time it happens, build a big file against you and sue you...the law says that you can not disturb the peace and go over a certain amount of decibels, that amount changes depending on if you live in a flat, a detached house, a semi detached....

HAVE SOME RESPECT FFS
10:00 January 22, 2011 by Thorfinna
I agree, how can you not care at all about the fact that you are making your neighbours life miserable just because you want to destroy your hearing and be a jackass????? have some respect, how do you dare annoy someone like that, on purpose because of your selfishness???!!!!!!

You are someone really nasty indeed

Hope karma comes and bite you in the backside!!!!

I also have a 1000 watts surround sound system but never ever, would I dare to distrub my neighbours because I have respect for people and I do not see why they should listen to my music and be annoyed and disturbed by it

What a world of idiots we live in
11:17 January 22, 2011 by Nilspet
@ Scots

I agree with you totally. The price for disrespect can be very high as I will describe here:

A year or so ago I saw one guy in my block kicked out after he violated the rule so many times. He normally came home like 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays and you could hear the yelling hundreds of meters away already. When they got in in the building then (almost) everyone woke up. They often said that they did not know it disturbed the neighbors (screaming and their disco music at 3 or 4 am)..pretty pretending like nothing happened. OK he and his friends were completely drunk but that is no excuse. Finally he lost his contract! People (especially me) here loved that moment when he had to pay what he did to us ! Unfortunately if you call the cops they would not come unless you said you could hear people fighting. In general you call Störningsjouren in your city and they would come and then make a report and will also knock on your neighbors door right away (after they have written the report .. meaning that once they took note they won't delete it).
12:58 January 22, 2011 by Mb 65
Kcussmilsum have you ever considered that you are going deaf and that's the reason that you have to have it so loud. many young people are getting hearing lose due to listening to loud music. Please respect your neighbor. believe me one day you will be in the same position as he is now. then you will not be laughing.

18:21 January 22, 2011 by kcussmilsum
Gee Thanks,

I would buy it, but why bring a knife to a gunfight?

@ mb55

What did you say? Icunthearyou, I'vegotanearinfucktion : )

@ Thorfinna & Scotts

Like the local does in their story articles, which like my comment, makes readers have to read between the lines and jump to conclusions, I left out the fact that I play My films at -40 db, which if standing up to the other side of the wall, is hard to hear. It's the sub that can only be distinguished, but it's been set low, almost to off.

My bio system is on during daytime, if and when I actually get a chance to use it.

Nighttime is out of the question past kl. 10 as people do sleep.

However, the slacker living nextdoor seems to be home 24/7, collecting disability funds because his back is hurting. Funny how he can move heavy furniture around the neighborhood and go to the shooting range, standing on his feet for a couple of hours. Hmmmm.

But, I degress...

Like I stated earlier, the neighbor never said to turn it down, it was mentioned in a roundabout way, without having the backbone to say if it was indeed annoying in the first place. Yes, I do have respect for poeple, it's a two way street baby.

My hearing is quite well, thanks for the concern though.

As far as wishing harm to a person, as which happened to the unfortunate young man in the article, You're a realpieceofshit for making that statement inferring violent death to someone. It's a fine line to be Very Careful with, and it could be interpreted as a threat.

As far the rental agency is concerned, as long as They don't hear noise outside the dwelling, the only thing they can do is offer the complaining tennant an alternate unit if available. Otherwise, people could falsely make acusations without any Proof, there are laws written for that sort of thing, as well as tennants have rights against wrongful eviction cases.

Lawsuit? Good luck to them, it would have to be proven with actual evidence by a professional that must verify the sound level, or any other type of renter violations.

Got it? Get it? Good : )

heheh until sweden changes the criminal law people like this will apear on a daily basis in the society as for sweden is criminal heaven where u kill and go to jail for part time so they should realy change this law in order criminals to run away
06:07 January 23, 2011 by jbat
but omash.. this "kcussmilsum" is surely not Swedish... and why should Swedes adjust their own law for an immigrants like this?

maybe new law that will kick out an arrogant and rude immigrant like this from this country will be enough...
06:57 January 23, 2011 by kcussmilsum
Interesting point jbat,

How about smilsuM adjusting to the Scandinavian way of life.

There seems to be a Double Standard going on in Sweden, where it's okay for one group of immigrants to behave unruly by raping young Scandinavian girls, forcing their false Relgion of Peace on society while blowing up themselves in the middle of stockholm during the busy Christmas shopping rush.

In England, they even convinced the government to adapt Brit law to Sharia law, somehow the Space-Time continum has skewed and White is now Black.

In same tune Your singing, I could say the same about immigrants, whereas, ALL immigrants should be returned to their countries of origin, Regardless if they have become Swedish citizens or not, for breaking laws.

But, I degress.

Instead You expect americans to adapt to Your "Living in a Box with Blinders on" attitude. While the dogs run free off leash, and they Bite too : )

Nice going Swearabia!
07:09 January 23, 2011 by jbat
Hahahaa.. rude american coming to another people country and don´t know how to behave.. i don´t care for whatever arabs doing here.. if they are rude too like you.. then deported them... you rude immigrants should know how to behave at another people country...

oo yeahh.. mr busher forgot to install morale value in your american education system? i know there are so many serial killers there.. much more than those stupid arabs that become terrorist there...(they are acutally puppet for war makers people... is busher is one of the war maker? only american will say no!)

LOLOLL..

What isn't stated in the article, but I have read elsewhere, is that murder victim was also disturbed by the noise, that he thought came from his murderer's flat (he had complained in a text message to a friend). The source of the sounds had apparently been a new neighbour who had moved in in a flat on the floor below that same day and had been busy putting his furniture in place.
12:12 January 23, 2011 by soultraveler3
@Askar , I also heard that. It's makes the story even more of a shame.

People, not just swedes (although they are some of the worst offenders) really need to be more open and friendly. Just a couple generations ago everyone knew, talked to and hung out with neighbors, now people tend to avoid each other like the plague. It makes the whole enviroment of apartment living even worse.

You need to respect your neighbors obiviously, but at the same time people need to have enough of a spine to talk to / confront each other if there's a problem. You also need to be aware of the fact that if you're living in a flat that you're going to hear noise occasionally from the neighbors and be okay with that.

People not bothering to talk to each other or not bothering to get to know their neighbors causes a lot of problems.
13:52 January 23, 2011 by kcussmilsum
@ soultraveler3

Excellent Spot-On post, Thanks : )

Living in apartments has it's drawbacks ie; Noise, this should be understood upon moving in, it happens because people make noise, it's part of life and could be a good insentive to buy a house without neighbors living on the other side of the wall. Until then everone lives life : )

@ jbat

Have You ever been to Amerika?

If there was a new law to deport people for being Rude and Arrogant, Swedes would be the first to go, as are way more Rude than Americans, which by the way have courage to stand up for themselves. Swedes generally are spinless cowards.

Just take a look at Malmo, even the police are cowards to uphold the laws against the violent immigants living there.

Swedes don't even apologise, or excuse themselves, when they plow through people on the streets or in shopping malls. Most of them never smile. They can't drink responsibly, and their is a high suicide rate among them.

Why is an American living in Sweden then?

Because politicians like the Bush administration, have fck'd up the rest of the world by staging fake terrorist attacks like 911 so they can invade and secure countries with oil like iraq and afganistan, only to scatter the fleeing terrorist to other countries like Sweden. Why would anyone want to live in a country of lies and corruption. Bottom line America sucks big time. Kudos to Wikileaks !!!

Unfortunately, I did not know how bad it was here, but Sweden is still a great country and will even be better once the Religion of Peace imsurgents are driven back to their homelands - last time I heard the war was over in the middle east.

The only thing positive I got from living in the US is Back-Bone, I stand up for My opinion and beliefs, unlike the spinless jellyfish Swedes.
14:45 January 23, 2011 by tombby11
@kcussmilsum

Man you are full of bullshit, you are a person from America, who left his country because the government attacking Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan (this part is good) , but the part of coming to Sweden and start to bitching about Swedes and showing that you want Muslims in Sweden (who ran to this place from your government attack) to get out of Sweden? Where should they go? to their homeland ?

1. The war did not end in the middle east (if you just bother yourself and read any part of news in Iraq and Afghanistan)

2 Suppose the war ended , this is not enough , (you shuold return the house in the same shape when you got it in the first place ) . In other words , the Amircans as well as the British and the NATO are risponsible of returning those countries to the same situation when they came 9 years ago .
17:14 January 23, 2011 by muscle
@kcussmilsum:

So now americans will come to sweden and create corruption here and seek for asylum :D?
18:11 January 23, 2011 by kcussmilsum
@tommby11

I guess You have selective reading skills. No problem, I write S l o w e r for you : )

Point 1.

I could care less about muslims, or the middle east.

I stated Very Clearly that the US government staged the 911 attacks in order to get aproval from allies to invade Iraq for oil, the official story was to find bin ladden, the insurgent terrorsts and WMD's. Saddam's capture was a bonus.

However, No bin ladden or WMD's? Seems odd, don't ya think?

Wikileaks is another US stratagie to put lock on the free internet when national security is threatened on the internet, meaning a Police State like China.

It has the same effect of paving the road that 911 did for Homeland Security.

Freedoms and Privacy are now revoked.

And Muslims running to Sweden from a Muslim country?

There here because Sweden has weak immigration policy, in which the EU forces a hand in the matter and the immigrants know this, especially the plush welfare money handed out to them and is sent back to there families in iraq.

How do I know this? I talked with many Muslims, and they told Me. Some even stated how the Swedes are suckers and idiots for this.

Once there here, they meet a Scandinavian, have kids, marry and apply for permanent residency, up to and including citizen ship. Then, once a citizen, they will divorce the Scandinavian, send for their muslim wife and children to live in Sweden, then the process starts all over again.

Point 2.

I was not informed, or did I even consider of Sweden having the problems with immigrants from the middle east. Once I arrived here and after a year, I can to the conclusion that eventually within 5 years, a terrorist would attack in a large city. It's not hard to imagine with what is going on in the world. I was looking for shangra la.

So, moving here was a better choice with all the problems that were taking place when I left, one being the economy of 2007. House and Property values took a hard dive to a quarter of what they were worth. People were losing their jobs, and the stock market took a hit too. Health care for children are non-existint.

Sweden seemed like a better choice at the time.

Point 3.

Sweden is now involved in the war, so are you willing to pay for the rebuilding?

I don't agree with using tax payer money for a war Sweden clearly has no business being in, especially when they are taking in the same persons they are bombing.

What happened to Sweden being a nuetral country?

Yes, Send them back to their mulim brothers, and leave the west alone!
17:00 January 24, 2011 by Syftfel
While no sane Swede condones murder as a way to solve a noise problem, this story illustrates, with all desired clarity, how noise(or uninvited sounds) can be a serious environmental intrusion. We all need to be considerate and exersize caution, and be a little less selfish, especially in apartment buldings, before we blast hip-hop music for our neighbors. Where is MP on this story? I'd like to hear from them. Or are they hiding behind "freedom of expression" or some other irrelevant invective? Clearly the violator is not without responsibility here. Lets hope the liberal courts considers that too.

Did you know that some Anglo-Countries actually use Barking Dogs to keep Muslims out of their Towns and Smaller Cities. One of those Countries even has the gall to be an capaigning for a seat on the U.N. Security Council.
