Swedish daily to jointly publish WikiLeaks

Three major newspapers in northern Europe will join forces with a Norwegian paper to comb through about 250,000 cables originally exclusively handled by WikiLeaks' media partners, newspaper Svenska Dagbladet told AFP on Sunday.

Norwegian daily Aftenposten will share its findings with three major media outlets in Denmark, Germany and Sweden, Martin Jönsson, the executive director of Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, said on Sunday. The other two papers are Germany's Die Welt and Denmark's Politiken, he said.

The content was so voluminous that "it would be easier from a logistical point of view to work in a team," Jönsson said. SvD and Aftenposten both belong to Norway's Schibsted Media group.

The mounting number of media that have gotten their hands on the cables is undermining WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's strategy of tightly controlling how and where the documents it obtains appear.

The whistleblower website had originally reached a deal with five major newspapers, The New York Times, France's Le Monde, Spain's El Pais, The Guardian in Britain and Germany's Der Spiegel, to gradually release the diplomatic cables.

The exact terms of the agreement are unknown. Aftenposten has refused to reveal how it obtained the database.

Since obtaining them late December, Aftenposten has published them regularly without marching in step with the slow release scripted by Assange. Svenska Dagbladet has so far published eight articles based on the secret data, its director said.

Well, I believe this is positive news. Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) is conservative yet credible and the more the merrier. I wonder if Norwegian Aftenposten didn't bribe someone to get their hands in the candy jar though.

Julian Assange's strategy of tightly controlling how and where the documents it obtains appear.....

I must misunderstand the point of wikileaks beacuse this attitude seems to go against the whole principle of the free information society I thought wikileaks was a part of.
11:36 January 24, 2011 by muckfuslims
The most important issue here is that it really shouldn't matter by who, or when it is released as long as it's any info released to expose the US for it's lies to the world : )

@ muckfuslims

I think you just encapsulated the entire ethos of Julian Assange and Wikileaks ... despite the fact he says he's trying to "fight injustice without prejudice" and make the world a more open place he seems to rather exclusively only target the United States. Sure, the United States isn't perfect, but one would like to believe an organization that is supposedly dedicated to fighting global injustice would spend a little effort making things uncomfortable for China, Hugo Chavez, Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, Russia, Bolivia, etc, etc ...

It seems the more correct term for Wikileaks would be "the Anti-American Post" ... the thing I can't stand is they won't simply admit they're biased in their efforts. If they would just do that I wouldn't dislike them as much, but Wikileaks and Assange are completely and utterly egotistical hypocrites.

What ever the motives of Assange et al it has done a lot of good in my book anyway. The exposure of the duplicity of many countries is very useful knowledge for the public to be able to understand what is going on around them. We do not have to take everything these criminals dish out to us!!!
13:12 January 24, 2011 by big5
Wikileaks's revelations have strengthened at least two dictatorships, in Belarus and Zimbabwe, by damaging the credibility of their democratic oppositions. I'd call that doing harm, not good.

@blursd

I think it's because US got itself into many wars against other countries ever since it became a superpower and Wikileaks think that if they don't speak up then it's only time until the US comes for them, like the quote:

First they came for the communists,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists ,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

@ Horace

And you think the United States is unique in this aspect ... I would argue that whatever criticism the United States receives for any particular action there are dozens of other countries doing the same thing ... and many times to a far greater and sinister effect. Therefore if you ONLY target the United States it's rather obvious your primary concern isn't an altruistic quest for the truth, but rather a prejudiced witch hunt (that fulfills some self-serving purpose).
15:20 January 24, 2011 by UScitizen
@ Horase

You think the US is coming for you? That's funny right there, I don't care who you are. The US gets involved in some areas of the world for some (sometimes) dumb reasons but the US doesn't want to take over and control any other countries, believe it or not. There's just over 300 million Americans.. 4.5% of the world's population, and there are 1.34 BILLION people in China...that's 20% of the world's population. So who do you think will be coming after you in 50 years whe they're 50 % of the world's population?
15:29 January 24, 2011 by Swedesmith
I'm all for crusading journalists who expose corruption and the lies of big government, but Jullian Assange just reminds me of a naughty, little boy who finds racy pictures of his parents in their dresser drawer and brings them to school to show to his classmates.
18:39 January 24, 2011 by jbat
Hahhaa Horace... you just put the "quote of the century!"

10000000000% agree with you!

UScitizen.. yes.. there are only 300 million americans.. thats why now their government trying to influence governments and people from another country as many as they can to make them American minded people!

So sad Swedes and some other European country and people are so stubborn to accept them especially in Arabs/refugees issue! LOL!

"...... Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me "
00:11 January 25, 2011 by jimfromcanada
Perhaps the reason Assange's material seems biased against the USA is that the most of the material came from a US military person, so it would reveal American material.

If you want wkileaks to reveal material critical of Chinese, Russian, or Pakistani governments then submit such material to wikileaks yourself, if you can get it.

It seems Al Jazeera has got the idea. Good for them.
00:24 January 25, 2011 by BobWas
What I find ironic is that Wikileaks is being paid by these newspapers, but it doesn't want to reveal the amount. It would spoil the whole "little guy" image they have. Somebody needs to leak Wikileaks.

Because money is changing hands, prosecution of these newspapers should be considered. They are trafficking in stolen goods, not practicing journalism. All the protections afforded journalistc sources should be tossed out the window.

And it's not about little Julian Assange against the big, bad USA. With all of our private information tied to personnumbers, and social security, and national insurance numbers, we should all be concerned about Wikileaks. These people could drain our bank accounts, ruin our credit scores, steal passport information, invent criminal files on us. Any record on us, on any database, anywhere could be hacked by these people.
00:48 January 25, 2011 by blursd
@ Jimfromcanada

No ... it's not really a question of Assange or Wikileaks "seeming" biased against the United States ... it's more of a fact. They've rather exclusively focused on the United States whilst simultaneously eschewing all other equally legitimate targets. The entire raison d'etre for Assange and Wikileaks is to steal information ... that is what these people do for a living ... Moreover, Assange has a rather well documented pattern of anti-American behavior, and has made countless statements to the same effect.

It would be like me having a pattern of saying "I think Germany is to blame for all the problems in the world" and " I don't like Germany," and then declaring I had dedicated my life to uncovering a pattern of abuses in the global airline industry. Of course, in my quest to uncover these abuses I would only target Lufthansa ... even though all the other global airline companies would be equally valid targets ... I'm only interested in Lufthansa, because ... well, I don't like Germans, and it serves to further my own personal prejudices.

That is essentially the same scenario we're dealing with here regarding Wikileaks ...

@ US citizen You watch too much Larry the cable guy. Really? Of course the U.S. wants to rule the world. It's at the basis of capitalism. Destroy your competition and then you can charge what you want. It's simple really.

@ blursd Your are very astute in your comments however I would have to say that the U.S. deserves this type of attention after it's conduct for the last sixty plus years. Of course the rest of the world commits this type of subterfuge but not all of them hold themselves up as the country chosen by "God" to lead the world.

The U.S. has been bent on imperialism for almost seven decades. They have been at it for so long they can't see the folly in it but instead pursue with a religious zeal akin to a birth right the greedy manipulation of the third world and their allies. After the last eight years led by Dick " Lucifer" Cheney and his illiterate stooge they have approached an all time low. Even the American public is turning on their elected royalty as they watch them steal everything they can in a shameless political debacle.

Wikileaks will,I fear, create a far more sinister issue in the free society we now enjoy. This and incidents like this will lead to the increased censure of free speech and will eventually serve to bring on censorship of the internet which may be the most egregious wound of all. Though I believe in absolute disclosure by all political entities we have not yet reached the consensus for this in free society. We must be clever about it and not engage in the sophomoric pursuit of simply showing our ass to the establishment.

@jbat Once again we must endure the infantile bleating of the poor neglected Arab who longs to have the respect of the developed world... Thy this... Try displaying a bit of intellect before displaying your ass to us. You see in our society (the one you so long to be included in) this is how one gains the respect of one's peers. We respect above all things a demonstration of genuine social maturity. We likewise abhor a ranting lunatic who simply wishes to blame their stunted social ineptitude on the ugly Americans.
