Swedish films evenly split Guldbaggen awards

The winners of Sweden's 2010 national film awards on Monday night were evenly spread out among the nominees, with three films walking away with at least two awards.

Both Beyond (Svinalängorna), which received eight nominations, and Easy Money (Snabba Cash) walked away with three awards, while Pure (Till det som är vackert) picked up two.

The best film prize was awarded to the critically acclaimed Sebbe, which was shut out in the other two categories in which it received nominations: best director and best actor.

Babak Najafi, who directed Sebbe, lost to veteran actress Pernilla August, who was behind the lens for Beyond, which also won in the best supporting actress category for Outi Mäenpää's performance and picked up a best achievement award.

August lost in the best actress category for her role in Taiwanese-Swedish co-production Miss Kicki to Alicia Vikander in Pure.

In the best screenplay category, August missed out for her work on Beyond with Lolita Ray to Lisa Langseth, who also directed Pure.

Sebastian Hiort af Ornäs, who played the lead role in Sebbe, lost in the best actor category to Joel Kinnaman in Easy Money, which also won a best achievement award.

Among the films that were shut out of the awards included Simple Simon (I rymden finns inga känslor) starring Bill Skarsgård, son of Hollywood star Stellan Skarsgård, which received four nominations, and biopic Cornelis, about the life of Dutch-Swedish troubadour Cornelis Vreeswijk.

Millennium heroine Noomi Rapace, who was not present at the ceremony, also lost in the best actress category for her role in Beyond to Vikander.

The best supporting actor award went to Peter Dalle for Beyond Blue Skies (Himlen är oskyldigt blå), also starring the younger Skårsgard.

The Social Network, which details the origins of social networking giant Facebook, lost to Lourdes in the best foreign language film category.

Separately, Änglagård - tredje gången gillt, helmed by English director Colin Nutley and starring his wife and daughter, pipped past Easy Money and Farsan, directed by Josef Fares, for the audience prize.

Tussilago, an animated retelling of the West Germany embassy bombing in Stockholm by a member of the Red Army Faction in 1975, won for best short film, while Regretters (Ångrarna), about two Swedish men who reversed their sex change operations, won for best documentary.

Awarded annually since 1964, the Guldbagge, or Golden Beetle, is the Swedish Film Institute's award for achievements in film from the previous year. The beetle-shaped award was designed by Swedish sculptor Karl Axel Pehrson.
