Since the centre-right Alliance coalition first took power in Sweden more than four years ago, the number of young people receiving disability pension payments has increased by nearly 50 percent, which the social security minister called a "political catastrophe."

Young people who end up taking the benefits include those who attend special schools for the mentally disabled or require several extra years to complete upper secondary school and receive special compensation instead of student loans, newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) reported on Wednesday.

Social Security Minister Ulf Kristersson pointed out that a number of these individuals leave the labour market with relatively unclear psychiatric diagnoses instead of receiving help from employers.

He added that the solution to their mental illness cannot be that they will never work, calling it "inhumane," according to the report.

Even at the end of 2006, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt lamented the large number of young people who were 'retiring' from the workforce and instead receiving sick or disability benefits.

"It is clear that it is not good. It must be very odd for those who are 25 years old and are told that 'as we see it, you have clearly worked,'" he told news agency TT at the time.

That year, 4,500 young people under 30 years old took what were then termed "early retirement" benefits (förtidspension).

By last year, the number had risen to 6,700, according to preliminary statistics from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).

The ruling Alliance coalition is now expressing its dismay at the high number in even stronger terms.

"We cannot continue to put young people on disability benefits who will never come off of them, it is unfair. It is a political catastrophe," Kristersson told SvD on Tuesday.

He emphasised that it is not about "forcing someone into the labour market."

"This will be done carefully," he promised.

However, the minister's goal remained clear.

"I want to bring down the number of new young people taking on disability pensions by a couple thousand a year. It will be one of my biggest political challenges," Kristersson told SvD.

Kristersson has pledged to reduce the number of young people receiving the benefits by one-third this year, according to SvD.

Interesting how virtually any story in The Local instantly becomes an excuse to lament the fact that Sweden accepts immigrants.

I know young people who are on sick benefits. Not one of them is an immigrant or child of an immigrant.

So wake up, "Sweetdishgurl". Maybe you should check out the real Baghdad before you return to Malmö and see if your comparison still holds up.

Fact is that Svensson can't reproduce so he'll need someone to wipe his backside when he's old and sick. So immigration's something he'll have to learn to like.

As far as the actual article is concerned, yeah Sweden is a country which seems to love assigning "diagnos" to young people who differ from the norm. Once that diagnosis has been issued, it seems to be both security blanket and prison.

Oh my aching back(that used to be the excuse years ago). I actually believe that most immigransts would like to work if they wuould be allowed to do so. I Also believe that it is to easy to "retire" when you are under retirement age. Surely a young person can be cured from whatever ails them unless it is somekind of fata disease? There should be more of an effort to get people back on track.

ure right in that one johnny, most of the people with early retirements are swedish

i heard thousand times at work about clients getting retirement for several months just for being depressed, (my girl left me) more than the 30% with antidepressives, some back condition, or psoriasis ( yeah i have seen those too)

this shows clearly that, swedish health care is a joke...

Dear dan-sparrow I suffer from Psoriasis, sadly it is not only a horrible to live with skin complaint.

In about 15% of cases it causes severe crippling of the joints resulting in severe movement restriction and constant pain, hence I have to use a wheelchair.

In the uk I was pensioned off as unfit to work, until i moved to sweden when they illigally removed my pension from me, Although I am married to a Swede, i cannot claim anything from sweden towards my disability nor will the uk pay me my lawful entitlement of a pension that I paid dearly for in National Insurance contributions, when I worked befor I was crippeled with psoriasis.

So I guess Yes I would agree most counties health care isnt very caring at all

There are 20 million illegal aliens in the usa right now, mostly mexicans which have 12 children each. The usa is in failure right now, overwhelmed with trying to take care of the illegal aliens. The system is in its death throws as I write this. By the way the SELF SERVING LIAR President Clinton is part of the reason the usa is failing, he pushed NAFTA CAFTA AND GATT through which sent all american jobs overseas causing the middle class to disappear, so don't let him into sweden, he is the cause of most of the problems in the usa. Don't listen to anything he may say. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS destroyed the usa and will do the same to sweden. Turn it around now before you end up like the usa. A failed system.

@lilacdragon

i know what it is, and i know that u can also work even beign afected by psoriasis

anyway i dont get one thing, u was gettinf a pension from UK and u moved to sweden, and u asked here for pension too?

damm

i think im going to ask for it, my finger hurts (when i scratch my ass)

Dear dan sparrow, yes you can work at first being affected by Psoriasis and yes I did, I ran my own small company which I loved, helping other people with Ill health and disabilities. The uk doctors told me repeatedly to stop working so hard and in the end I was forced to. I was then awarded disability pension (that I had paid for) through the national insurance contributions scheme. According to Eu law disabled and also thousands of ex pat pensioners of retirement age are allowed to take there pensions with them if the move to any european country. But the Uk government has refused to pay these people thier entitlements. No I did not apply for any money in Sweden, I just commented on the fact that if you move, because of uk illigal activities you are in a Pension limbo. I hope this clarifies things for you and your poor finger

The headline of this story is really misleading -- the young people aren't in "early retirement", they are disabled by severe mental illness.

The fact is that there are no cures (yet) for severe mental illness. Some people are able to function thanks to medication, and find and keep employment. But others live with debilitating symptoms that are unpredictable, which makes it hard for them to keep jobs.

Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia are all in the Top Ten of leading causes of disability worldwide.

Let's hope that Kristersson does some reading, before he decides what's "humane" and what's not.
