Swedish journalists attacked by Cairo mob

Two Swedish reporters were attacked by an angry mob Wednesday while reporting in an impoverished area of Cairo before a soldier arrested them and held them for several hours, their daily said.

A reporter and a photographer of the Aftonbladet tabloid - who were accompanied by an interpreter and a driver -- were reporting on how the poorest Egyptians found food during the unrest that has rocked the Arab nation.

When the journalists got out of their car to ask a woman rummaging through garbage if they could film her, a mob suddenly formed around the pair.

"The crowd took the car keys and, the driver's SIM card, placed rocks in front of the car wheels and spat in our faces" saying the team was from Israel's Mossad spy agency, reporter Karin Östman said.

A soldier came to help the journalists, but then refused to release them and threatened them, she added.

"He said that if he killed us right then no one would find us, and ordered us to stay in the car," she said, explaining that the soldier and other troops let them go after a few hours.

The incident comes on a day which saw supporters of embattled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak take to the streets in an attempt to show the Egyptian leader was not without allies following a week of protests calling for his ouster.

On Tuesday, Mubarak announced he would not run for reelection in Egypt's September vote, news which did little to quell the growing tide of sentiment against him.

Hundreds of protesters were injured in clashes on Wednesday between pro-Mubarak demonstrators and anti-government protestors who want the president to step down immediately.

As the political crisis continues, Swedish tour operators have also been busy flying Swedes home who have been on vacation in Egypt.

Nevertheless, the Swedish foreign ministry estimates that several thousand Swedes will still be in Egypt by the end of the week.

Mssg clear then. Don't prop up unsavoury fascist regimes by holidaying and spending your cash in these places. Don't imagine that saying 'but I'm Swedish, Ima liberal just like you' is going to cut much ice.

Even then, last I heard, the Canary Islands Liberation Front are getting itchy for a spat.

So they wanted to get photos of people picking through garbage, and they're surprised they don't get a good reception? Treat people like zoo animals and they probably won't approve.
05:40 February 3, 2011 by Diis
They deserve that reception. Well done poor guys u got your pride saved from exposure to the world
09:45 February 3, 2011 by Nemesis
The journalists involved deserved that.

In Northern Ireland we used to have vermin like that looking for pictures fo suffering that would fit there ideologies. It was sickening how they went about it.

Maybe now those journalists might stop and think, but I doubt it.

I agree w/ all messages so far. somehow I find it very hard to feel sorry for journalists. But of course we need them how otherwise would we know what is going on in all the corners of the earth. It is just how some of them go about it all that can be very offensive. Princess Diana comes to my mind. I do wish the Egyptian people well and I hope Mubarak sees the writing on the wall and leaves. Where would he go? I guess the US would be his choise maybe they will let him in for old times sake....or maybe not.
12:54 February 3, 2011 by seagull
People above saying they deserved it are idiots. How on earth is the world supposed to know what is going on without the journalists taking such risks?
15:38 February 3, 2011 by voiceofreason
Sometimes I wonder if the whole Arab world has gone crazy.

They never stop throwing stones, burning flags, chanting their slogan and blaming every thing on Israel and America.

Every country gets the kind of leader it deserves, this revolution is just going to end up with another form of tyranny (Religious maybe) since this is the only kind of government they can live under.

Why do I say this, a typical Arab (muslims actually) always believes his ideas are supreme and if he is not heeded, then he rants and raves and ventilates. Democracy can't work this way.

What you think you see in Egypt is not the real story. I believe that the reason the Middle East is going through these "demonstrations" are because of President Obama's weakness and leanings toward the Muslim Brotherhood.

I have written about this in: http://www.unmitigated-truth.com/2011/01/you-reap-what-you-sow.html

We are living in dangerous times.
