Ease immigrant family reunification: Greens

Published: 4 Feb 11 08:21 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/31830/20110204/

Sweden's Green Party has announced that it wants to reduce or even remove conditions for immigration on the grounds of family reunification.

Party co-spokespeople Peter Eriksson and Maria Wetterstrand will formally put forward the proposal during deliberation with the government on Friday about cooperation on refugee and immigration policy.

A refugee who is granted asylum in Sweden must have housing and utilities arranged before the government will consider granting residency for other family members in Sweden. It has also proposed new requirements to strengthen kinship and identity.

Eriksson and Wetterstrand wrote in an opinion piece in the Dagens Nyheter (DN) daily on Friday that the requirements divide families.

"We do not want to risk ending up in a situation where the Sweden Democrats have an impact on our policies. It is our ambition to work with the government to be able to cooperate on refugee and immigration policies that will continue throughout the term," the leaders wrote.

The outgoing Green Party leaders argued that a cooperative approach over kinship immigration and healthcare could help to strengthen the position of refugees in society.

"We want to be clear about our demands and hope that cooperation will lead to the strengthening of the status of refugees and undocumented individuals in society. Undocumented migrants should have the same right to medical care as all others at the same cost," they added.

It's good too see the Green Party so in line with the thoughts and opinions of the average Swede.

Come the next election, this is just the sort of thing Swedes will want to hear about. I hope the Greens don't forget to put it in their manifesto.
09:00 February 4, 2011 by Diis
Well done green party you atleast some mercy for the poor refugees denied family reunion such as somalis .
09:18 February 4, 2011 by Keith #5083
Great. Now my uncle's cousin's sister's nephew's third wife's son's cousin can come.

Presumably the GP will also insist on DNA tests to confirm 'close relative' status.

Oh, but Gee, maybe it is wholly unreasonable to question the ability of 'economic refugees' to settle in any country especially where the social/financial benefits are so good from the State.

I suppose anything resembling common sense in this will be regarded as 'racist'. But really I have absolutely no objection to 'self-supported' immigration or helping refugees from genuine war-distressed areas.

I am an immigrant and I take nothing - NO THING - in any way from the Swedish state and the Swedish people. I will not even accept the 'free taxi' to take me home when I have been emergency rushed to hospital (which I also pay for).

Why should Swedish taxpayers support my lifestyle?
09:20 February 4, 2011 by Nemesis
This should increase the Sweden Democrat vote nicely.

Ever notice that when one of these political groups states they oppose the Sweden Democrats, they bring in an idea designed to create a backlash that will get the Sweden Democrats more support.
09:21 February 4, 2011 by expatjourno
There is no reason for Sweden to accept any refugees unless they come from neighboring countries. Period.

Every single "refugee" that comes to Sweden deliberately bypassed a dozen equally safe countries that just happen to have less generous benefits.

Sweden's policies are absolute bullshit and are designed to dismantle the welfare state by overburdening it.
09:22 February 4, 2011 by byke
I agree with Nemesis on this, while I am pro immigration to the greater extent ... this type of bully boy tactics will do nothing but incite more tensions and hatred which will lead to greater support for the SD.
09:36 February 4, 2011 by Ravioli
The Green Party will not be satisfied until the every last habitant of Somalia and the Middle East have repatriated to Sweden. Thankfully this bafflingly ignorant line of thought is becoming less and less common here.
09:56 February 4, 2011 by HYBRED
I agree with the reunification idea. Send the refugees here back to where they came from to reunite with their families.
10:15 February 4, 2011 by Localer

10:47 February 4, 2011 by truthworthy
Good to hear that from the Greens, they are responsible party.

Populism. Immigrants will be happy and presumably vote for the left/greens. Swedes not directly affected by immigration policies will not care. So easily gained political points. Although I predict this is beginning to change.
11:38 February 4, 2011 by Rishonim
By doing this, they think they will reduce the risk of future attacks from refugies emanating from radical background and ideologies. Maria Wetterstrand is a sweaty chazzer.

I am in favour of immigration .

BUT

It is madness to drop all requirements for family reunification. There is already a housing shortage in the country, allowing family members into the country without the original immigrant having the capability to house or support his extended family is a recipe for disaster.

Person living in Sweden should have a secure job and housing before he should be considered to bring close relatives into the country. He/she should also put up a bond that guarantees that he/she will be financially responsible for the relative should the relative be unable to take care of himself . Only spouses and children should be allowed all others should have to apply independently for residency in Sweden. I think it is hard to prove who is related since papers and proofs might not be available.

When I grow up I wanna be a refugee in Sweden...
13:18 February 4, 2011 by svenne101
yes they can unite on the condition that they must support on their own not on the tax money.

each guy has 20 relatives and those 20 have 20*20=400 relatives.

family reunification is big scam along with sham marriages.

old swedish man bringing one young thailand girl will not effect any tax payer but people from certain countries they misuse this family reunifiacation.
13:21 February 4, 2011 by neoz717
I am a Swed myself and i think this is BS i as a Swed can not bring my wife here who is Latvian because i am still a student but roll the red carpets for them to unite with there families.... The only way she could come was by a student visa... Anyways point being if you want to start doing the good things you start with Sweden and the swedes and then move on... Charity begins at home.

I say the something about donating to other countries and no matter the cause Sweden itself has over 17,000 homeless people you can start donating to Sweden and taking care of the public before moving on to other nations.
13:38 February 4, 2011 by svenne101
@neoz717

you are lier. nothing is required for lativans to come to sweden.

only non EU people have lot of regulations.

go and see siljatallink ship . it only cost 50 sek from stockholm. no papers required.

@svenne101 You really think so? I wish it was that easy even though a person is in the EU he still has to register to live in any other country then his own if he stays longer then 3 months.

I would also like to refer you to http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/521.html so that you can check the info yourself.

And even though i can support myself and my wife without depending on social welfare they have refused, and said the only way she can come is by a Study Visa or if i get a permanent job.

If you still find issues or do not believe what i have said you can call up the migration and ask them if they ground a student and a Student income enough grounds to have your wife come and get a residence permit.

Between i am telling the truth if you choose to believe it or not is completely up to you, i did the application 2 years ago and then i got denied on the grounds of being a student and for example CSN is not an income.

I honestly do not know if they changed it by now or not, but anyways i will be calling them back soon since my wife's student visa is almost up.

Thanks for taking your time to read.

@Willissteel Although i am a Swed from my fathers side since birth, i only moved here 3 years ago, my Swedish is also very rusty :), i agree with you Swedes in general are very quite law abiding people, they also tend to have a fear of being labeled a racist so they do not say things that is on their mind.

I do care there are many things i care about personally, about criminal law in Sweden, about immigration law and so on... but i personally alone can not change anything, if i go out in the street with 1 sign people are going to pass by with out a second look, you need a crowd to go outside, not 1 guy alone. Anyways i agree about the concept your talking about, but you can not kick out all of them just like that, id rather put it this way, when they commit a crime deport them, be an abiding citizen or head to the door that leads back to your country.

Thanks for taking your time to read.
14:26 February 4, 2011 by Syftfel
It is "family reunification" that's the biggest problem in the entire immigration debate!!! Sweden must base it's immigrants based on need, not on "family reunification". If this is that high on the list, why can't they "reunify" in their country of origin, or some place else? Sweden can no longer carry the burden of "famliy reunifiers", financially or culturally. Keep the skilled immigrants but stop family reunification now!! Now!!!!
14:43 February 4, 2011 by calebian22
Family is an interesting concept. Is it the family unit or does the Green policy consist of extended family as well? If it is extended family it is beyond lunacy to even consider. One person in Sweden should not be able to toe hold an entire clan.
14:46 February 4, 2011 by svenne101
@neoz717

of course , you must have a job and show that you support yourself and your spouse before you set up a family.

you are saying that you are still studying. nothing can stop you to meet together but you must have stable economic situation otherwise you are burdening the system that is already burdened too much.

there are some people from certain countries just dump too many people on the social system in the name of family reunification.

As i said i can support my wife she has lived with me for around 3 years now, and i did not need the help of any welfare, i am doing well myself.

I can support myself very well i have an apartment, i am never late with the rent, we are eating well and so on...

So again i can support myself.

There should be a stern law about sending money utomlands + law that sends back immigrants who are fake.

Specially ones who buy houses in their countries.

And ones who travel back.

IRAQIS for example

and Lebanese.

and etc.
15:26 February 4, 2011 by Smiling Canuk
This is nothing to smile about. Based upon the Canadian experience take into these considerations:

Only allow it if the sponsor has a job and is willing to support family members. Otherwise you'll be increasing your welfare rolls.

Make this the immediate family only and not the extended family. Otherwise you'll be importing entire villages.
15:41 February 4, 2011 by Juan Harry Bush
Oh, I certainly won't lose any sleep on this issue. This will never fly with the general populace, ie; Scandinavians, and Yes People, this WILL help to make the SD party stronger with every minute this type of insane idea is entertained.

The fact that any party would have the gall to bring this to the table is a blatant slap in the face to the Original Domestic Culture of this land and it's People.

Not to mention the HUGE financial burden it places on the working class taxpayers.

There are also major security issues involved by just letting anyone move to another country with out some type of proven background checks, Hey the USA does this, and since Sweden uses them for advice on other security issues, ie; The Stockholm attack, then I see no reason why they can't do a better job at screening these Guests.

How many more attacks and or demonstrations does this country need anyway?

I don't have a problem with helping human kind out, but not at the sacrifice for the host country's traditions, cultures and people. Just like Good Sameritans do rescuing animals from dangerous situations or abandonment, which is the humane thing to do, but once the animal turns on society, they are put down at the local vet to prevent danger to others.

However, when sub-humans take advantage over a VERY giving country, and I do believe this goes without saying as most of the open minded "Awake" people here know already know what's really going on here in Sweden. The Voters really need think about the future of this country and the what kind of life their children will have. One day in the not so distant future, You will all wake up one day, saying "What happened, We never saw this coming".

Here's a few sayings that some may have heard in there travels to put to the "Guests"...

"Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds You". and "When In Rome, Do As The Romans Do"

... and to the Scandinavians...

"Know When To Say When" ... which by the way, is long overdue...

Just for an example, Can someone point out, in recent history please, when was the last time a practicing group or individual of either the Christian, or the Jewish faith, bombed a city, honor killed over a publicized media cartoon, or has threatened the life of anyone mentioning their profit in a context news story?

Has the SD party done any acts of violence recently, or ever?

Anyone... Anyone... Bueller... Bueller?

I didn't think so.

Have a Great Day Sweden : )

Swedish migration policy is like a jock , they don't care about the quality of the immigrant and their future contribution to the society. They thoughtlessly accept any one as a refugee or something else but later if the problem occurs they start blame them for all.

The Green Party is adamant about eradicating Swedish culture and values. Their proposals regarding immigration policy wouldn't be so pertinent if Sweden was a multi-ethnic society. However, Sweden is currently a proponent of multi-culturalism; essentially advocating that all other cultural practices are considered superior to Swedish culture and if you disagree, you're a nazi racist xenophobe.

UK is worst with immigrants from pakistan, india, and bangladesh mostly muslims. UK is paradise for extreme islamist people. they are now influence politics and wants shariaw law and refuse to speak english and want urdu schools for children.

now most children of muslims in UK do not speak english.

same will repeat here. most muslims living in ghettos dont speak swedish even they born in sweden.

Has sweden reached a turning point? It seems so, etnic swedes are becoming a minority? Your non europen people are they feeling victorious? Are etnic swedes sad and worried? What to the immigrants who come from other european cultures think ?
03:51 February 5, 2011 by soultraveler3
I agree with expatjourno as well.

The geneva convention says that persons seeking asylum must stop in the first safe country they come to. How can that possibly be Sweden unless they're coming from Russia or something? The fact that so many people travel across the entire EU to come to Sweden says something. Sweden has a reputation of easy access, easy citizenship and huge welfare benefits.

I have no problem with immigration, it's god for diversity and commerce. Most of it has to be in the form of educated, self-supporting immigrants that want to become a part of swedish society, accept it's traditions and speak it's language. As it is now, most of it is refugees that have traveled through many countries to get here.

If they take away all the conditions and rules surrounding famliy reunification it's going to be horrible on Sweden. Sweden's welfare system is already stretched. We're already seeing 4+ hour waits in the acute, 2 weeks for doc visits, and up to 18 months for surgery. Many towns don't have money to remove snow, pick up trash etc. It is insanely hard to get a job, it's even harder for immigrants.

If these conditions are removed the number of immigrants is going to skyrocket. Many refugee families are huge and the women often don't work outside the home. It's not only going to be the taxpayers getting screwed, it'll also be the refugees and immigrants already here. There will be a lot more competition for jobs and a lot less resources for those that can't find jobs.

Helping refugees is wonderful but I don't understand the mentality of some swedes that have the desire to bring in so many that the country can't handle it. My swedish friends don't get it either. It'd be one thing if the healthcare system was wonderful, the retirement benefits were wonderful, the taxes a little lower and plenty of jobs for everyone that's already here. Sadly, that's not that case and bringing in 1000s or more that don't have the means to support themselves just isn't a good idea.

If these regulations are removed things will just get worse. Also, the idiots in these parties need to stop mentioning trying to block SD at every turn. Every time one of them says something like that it just produces more support for SD.
18:03 February 5, 2011 by big5

09:24 February 6, 2011 by expatjourno
No family reunification for anyone. Ever. That would do a lot to stop economic migrants from coming to Sweden for the welfare benefits. The only refugees who should be considered for residence are people who live in well-founded fear for their lives.

Do Norwegians let in massive numbers of immigrants? I think not.
13:46 February 6, 2011 by Takai
Ladies and Gentlemen,

What I would like to say here might not be specifically about the above article, Since our first priority is the exchange of knowledge, which should be gladly shareable , I could not keep this to myself.

When I said, in one of my previous posts, that no country is as an innocent virgin girl, and that each country acts in favor of their own interest, here goes one example :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12347219

Each government has its own reasons to why decisions are made, that generally goes beyond public understanding. If the Swedish Government does not act towards decreasing immigration in Sweden, that decision´s base is much over racism, peace, prejudice, taking refugees in order to cause a good impression to other countries or reuniting them if families for charity and pity.

That is the kind of knowledge we need to search, ladies and gentlemen, that is the kind of knowledge we need to share.

Thank you.

Any questions, I am open. No trolling, open and globalized view, please.

Now get the figure from Western Union and others that wire money abroad to reveal HOW MUCH MONEY YEARLY IS SENT BACK TO COUNTIRES YOUR IMMIGRANTS COME FROM. IN THE US $20 BILLION IS SENT TO MEXICO anually AND $60 TOTAL TO LATIN AMERICA AND SOUTH AMERICA.

NEXT: FIND OUT COST TO SEND THE MONEY OUT. HERE YOU CAN SEND $300. TO LATIN AM. FOR $3.95. It cost me $15. per hundred to send to my sister 400 miles away in California. Cute. Offensive. Why are foreigners more equal than we, exactly.? Redustributy wealth and redistribute poverty.
