Sweden climbs in competitiveness rankings

Sweden has ranked second in the World's Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011, falling behind Switzerland, but leaping ahead of Singapore and the US.

Sweden jumped two places ahead of its ranking last year and remained the top Nordic country, with Finland seventh, Denmark ninth, Norway 14th and Iceland 31st. The US slipped to fourth from second, while the UK came in 12th.

"The country benefits from the world's most transparent and efficient public institutions, with very low levels of corruption and undue influence and a government that is considered to be one of the most efficient in the world," the report wrote.

Sweden's strong auditing and reporting standards and focus on education have developed a sophisticated business culture, the report added.

The rankings are calculated from both publicly available data and the executive opinion survey, a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the WEF together with its network of partner institutes.

The newest survey has expanded to include 139 countries from the previous 133.

Under the institutions indicator, Sweden topped the rankings in intellectual property protection, efficiency of legal framework in challenging regulations, ethical behaviour of firms, efficacy of corporate boards and protection of minority shareholders' interests.

Other areas where Sweden excelled included the quality of its overall infrastructure, quality of railroad infrastructure and effectiveness of anti-monopoly policy.

In terms of IT and planning, Sweden was praised for the availability of the latest technologies, broadband internet subscriptions, willingness to delegate authority and company spending on R&D.

Areas cited as the most problematic for doing business included restrictive labour regulations, tax rates, tax regulations, access to financing and inadequate supply of infrastructure.

Wow! I move over here and Sweden goes up in the rankings and the US goes down! That's really something! I didn't know I had that much influence.

I'm putting this comment here so my bud Nemesis can jump in and tell me that i'm really full of myself. Come on guy, I'm waiting......
16:24 February 16, 2011 by Nemesis
@ UScitizen,

Not guy, she.
16:32 February 16, 2011 by UScitizen
@ Nemesis,

Yeah, my wife said the same thing while watching tv last night when someone called a mixed group "Guys". I told her that was just a generic term. But since you're a lady, I'll refer to you as such from now on.

Oh, I get it, you're female. that's why you're stalking me. I do tend to attract women..... sometimes. Some love me, some hate me.

I will always remember one south african, who was talkin with a young british lady and in almost every second sentence he used word ''dude''.

He: you know dude...

Shw: yes I know.

It was so strange for me:)

Once again The Local is up on its high horse filling the pages with utter bull.

Why are The Local and Sweden's loony government not telling the world about its high unemployment rates for the under 25's (25%)

On top of that, why are The Local and Sweden's loony government not telling the world about how the unemployed are being sent to various company's (under various different titles) to work for nothing. On top of that, the government are PAYING these companies's £25 a day to take them.

The Swedish government then tells everyone that unemployment is dropping.

No wonder people can't get a job in Sweden, total madness. Who is this benefiting from this, friends of the conservatives?

Sweden should hang its head in shame. I challenge The Local to investigate this and publish it.

This is affecting 1000's in Sweden.

Wednesday was a gret day and I was having a little fun posting comments. A person shouldn't be serious all the time.

Most of the people here will jump up and tell you that Sweden is the most wonderful, perfect place in the world. Clean, happy, healthy, free education and health care etc.

That's what they try to get you to believe. If you read the stories on The Local and read the comments it totally different. They're completely dissatisfied with their government, the healthcare system, the job and housing market, the taxes, everything. Funny, that.

Well, being dissatisfied is one of the first steps in improvement. And of course not only for Swedes. I don't think it is in human nature to be satisfied. We would never have evolved to where we are today if that had been the case.

Good job Sweden. Nice to see Sweden doing so much better than before on so many indicators - and according to an independant evaluation, instead of some dodgy survey carried out by some dodgy organisation with an axe to grind.

Carry on.

@Great Scott: I would say that high unemployment and having people work for nothing is quite good for competitiveness...

Are you part of the loony conservatives or are you on a wind up.

If you're female and someone is calling you 'dude', that is meant as deliberate insult. However, with a South African you never can tell. Living in walled compounds at the bottom of the world is a legitimate excuse for being several decades behind on the lingo. No offense to the yarpies.
