Sweden's population nears 9.5 million

Published: 18 Feb 11 14:48 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/32138/20110218/

Sweden's population continued to grow at the end of 2010, despite a drop in immigration for the first time since 2004.

At the end of 2010, Sweden's population stood at 9.42 million, 74,888 more than at the end of the previous year, according to Statistics Sweden (Statistiska centralbyrån - SCB) on Friday.

A total of 149 municipalities reported population increases in Sweden, while the number of residents decreased in 140 localities in the country in 2010 and remained unchanged in one municipality - Ydre in central Sweden.

In Norrköping, Lund and Nacka, the populations surpassed 130,000, 110,000 and 90,000 inhabitants, while Vallentuna north of stockholm passed a more moderate 30,000.

Over the last 40 years, 16 municipalities have recorded successive population increases every year, mostly larger towns or suburban areas. However, Filipstad in central Sweden northeast of Karlstad and nearby Hällefors have both experienced a population decrease for 40 straight years.

115,641 children were born in Sweden last year, a 3.4 percent increase from 2009, which also recorded a 3.4 percent increase on the previous year. Slightly more boys than girls were born.

July 13th 2010 was the busiest day for maternity wards in Sweden as they welcomed 397 children on that day, while July and March were the most common months for births last year.

A total of 50,730 couples married in 2010, an increase of 5.6 percent from 2009. Since May 1st, 2009, same-sex couples have been allowed to marry in Sweden.

From 2008 to 2009, the number of same-sex couples who either registered their partnership or married increased by 2.5 percent, with women accounting for the increase.

The number of same-sex couples marrying or registering their partnerships increased by 29.3 percent in 2010 compared to the previous year.

However, in 2010, 6.2 percent more couples divorced compared to the year before. A total of 23,593 couples divorced and 112 couples dissolved their partnerships.

A total of 98,801 persons moved to Sweden in 2010, 3,479 fewer than in 2009, the first drop since 2004. A drop in women accounted for the largest decrease, while the rate for males remained the same.

The largest group of immigrants comprised returning Swedish citizens, followed by Somali and Iraqi citizens.

In recent years, immigration of Iraqis has decreased sharply. In 2007 15,200 Iraqi citizens came to Sweden, while in 2010, only 4,534 Iraqis arrived.

Among Swedish citizens who returned last year, most came back from Norway, the US, UK and Denmark. Most of the other immigrants came from their country of citizenship.

Last year, 48,853 individuals left Sweden, with more men than women departing. Compared to 2009, emigration increased by 24.5 percent. The increase is largely due to the Swedish National Tax Board (Skatteverket) conducting a special follow-up on individuals whose residence had been unknown for a longer period.

After these individuals were no longer considered resident in Sweden, they were removed from the population register as emigrants. Without this group, emigration was still 14 percent higher last year compared to 2009.

The figure is attributed to relatively low emigration rates in 2009, with last year's level matching those in 2006 to 2008.

Swedish citizens primarily moved to Norway, followed by the UK and US. Foreign citizens who emigrated often moved to their country of citizenship.

The remainder moved mainly to Denmark. Disregarding the 84 percent who were Swedish or Danish, one-third of those who moved to Denmark were Pakistani citizens.

After three years of decreasing numbers of individuals naturalising, 9.9 percent more obtained Swedish citizenship compared to 2009. A total of 32,457 became Swedish, with slightly more women taking citizenship. Most of those who became Swedish were Iraqi citizens, just as in 2009.

Are swedes moving to norway to get out of harms way?
15:48 February 18, 2011 by Rishonim
So swedes are banging more and aborting less. Or maybe they did not contribute much to this sudden population increase?
16:02 February 18, 2011 by jimmy1988
Thanks to immigration.
17:15 February 18, 2011 by canuk
each of the new swedes here in sweden like to have 5 kids.....it means a larger paycheck....
17:19 February 18, 2011 by UScitizen
115,641 children born + 98,801 moving to Sweden = a 214,442 total increase in population - 48,853 who left Sweden = a difference of 165,589.

If the official increase is 74,888 that means that only 90,701 people died in Sweden last year. That's a death rate of less than 1 %, or 1 per 1000, but the actual death rate is around 10 per 1000 which is 10 %.

Something doesn't add up. Would someone check my math please?
17:31 February 18, 2011 by canuk
10 percent of 1000 is 100 fool.

@ canuk

Thank you! I asked someone to check my math and I'm glad you did. I knew I had something wrong! what part of Canada are you from? My wife is from Ontario. It's a beautiful place

Imbalance in the statistics. You give us the number of births and no number of deaths. Likewise you give us the number of marriages and no number of divorces. w.t.f.......

@Uscitizen:

I guess your math teacher should have trial ... Lolzzz.

The population in Karachi (Pakistan) is more than 20 million thats twice the popultion of Sweden alone. Shame on Swedes Productivity ... Lolzzz.

Swedes must definatly thanks to immigrant to increase the number to some extent. When the Swedes are moving to other lands then what they can expect from internationals who don't know language, don't have social interation, don't have jobs, don't have any social or economical support, not used to Sweden's Extreme weather.

I think, Swedish Government should include Home's Pets in folkregister, As every Swedes have some kind of home's pet. So 9.5 million population + 9.5 million pets = 19 million, what a growth rate. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaooo.
18:17 February 18, 2011 by UScitizen
@ hammad674

Yeah, my math teacher let me down. I was absent that day.

Hey, are you one of those immigrants? Did you notice the picture on this story? You know, most Swedish men think the women here are too controlling and I guess that makes the men feel inferior.

I think that picture was taken at an airport and all those women are trying to grab an immigrant man to give them what they want and need since they can't seem to get it at home!!! I hope you got one or two of those beauties! ;O))
18:45 February 18, 2011 by hammad674
Fortunatly, I am not asylum seeker immigrant but a student here and counting my days to finish off everything and will love to go back my country. If i will remain in Sweden for so long either i will freeze or will act like Swedes in social life ...

Nice observation ... Lolzzzz

@ hammad674

One final comment to you. I don't know where you come from but when I was at SFI, I met many from Iran, Iraq, and other countries. We all joked and laughed together. We had a great time and got along fine. So why can't governments and countries do that? It seems like such a simple thing to do....
20:13 February 18, 2011 by hammad674
@UScitizen

I don't get your point exactly, everyone have their own preferences. Anyways best of luck if you are planning a long term stay in Sweden.
20:28 February 18, 2011 by UScitizen
My point is that people can get along just fine with each other with no hate or predjudice. I don't know why governments and countries can't or won't do the same. We're all the same, all human, with the same wants, need and desires. We could all live in peace. We could, but we won't. That's sad.

For the country as large as Sweden, 9.5 millions is a small number.
22:30 February 18, 2011 by hammad674
@UScitizen

Everyone want peace, and comfort. I realize many time that the Media of a country plays negative role in creating distances among the people and sometime extreme hate leads to kill people without judging facts or reality of the stories, one sided stories often leads to such disputes. Sometime gov looks for their interest and ignore the adverse impacts among people. This thing can only be eliminated by Education, and scrutinizing the information provided by any media. I personaly feel sometime that the person we hate is not such we assumed. So i believe people should not blindly trust any Media but rather focus on proactive approach of gathering more information and personal judgement before any action.

"For the country as large as Sweden, 9.5 millions is a small number."

Yes that's true koopa, I think Sweden may be the most sparsely populated country in the entire EU in terms of ratio of population to geographic area.

That is why the EU sees Sweden as a prime target for dumping of refugees. They've literally got a lot of room for it.

Whether the indigenous Swedish population favors such an unlimited perpetual dumping of refugees in their country or not is apparently irrelevant.

drop in real swedish but increase in fake swedish...
03:52 February 19, 2011 by Swedesmith
@US it has been my experience that individuals of different backrounds can get along on a one on one basis....or simply put, as humans.

It is political or religious extremism that usually fudges everything up.

"That is why the EU sees Sweden as a prime target for dumping of refugees. They've literally got a lot of room for it."

Sweden is sparsely populated because the country can't support a large population. If the climate had been that of southern Europe and the land had been futile in the areas of Sweden with the lowest population density - population density would have been increased by the native population themselves centuries ago.

I knew this article would draw the regular racist knuckle dragging cretins like flies to dung, and I was proved correct.
19:42 February 19, 2011 by loudasthunder
Well, now that that's been all said...

Send back ALL the Muslim Insurgents, then the numbers might read closer to 7.5 mil. This will decrease the surplus population and make Sweden a much safer place to live : )

Also, an immediate halt on immigration. This will give the social system a chance to recover and give the Scandinavians & Jews a chance to breathe before the next batch of angry immigrants arrive on the next asylum wave...

"Swedes must definatly thanks to immigrant to increase the number to some extent"

Yep - the quality is not important. Only quantity. I feel so SO thankful to the immigrants that come here and increase the total numbers, so Sweden could finally dream of being like Pakistan... In every sense.

"The largest group of immigrants comprised returning Swedish citizens, followed by Somali and Iraqi citizens."

The Somali people are the ones you have to watch out for. They've taken hold in the US already.

"If the climate had been that of southern Europe and the land had been futile in the areas of Sweden with the lowest population density - population density would have been increased by the native population themselves centuries ago."

I don't disagree. One of the main reasons for massive Swedish emigration to North America in the mid-to-late 1800s & early 1900s was the relative infertility of farmland in Sweden.

However, that doesn't change the fact that the modern EU now views Sweden as an extremely favorable dumping ground for the world's refugees due to being so relatively sparsely populated. Ripe to absorb a MASSIVE influx of Middle Easterners.

Whether indigenous Swedes as a whole think it's a good idea or not. They are to shut up and accept it apparently.
