Saab made to wait as Brazil delays fighter deal

Brazil has announced that it will delay a decision to buy 36 fighter jets following a slew of budget cuts, leaving Swedish firm Saab, along with French and US rival bids, playing the waiting game over the lucrative deal.

Major Brazilian daily O Estado de Sao Paulo cited four unnamed government ministers as saying new President Dilma Rousseff saw no "climate" for the acquisition in 2011, and that such a move in the midst of a $30-billion slash in the year's budget would be an "inconsistency."

France, Sweden and the United States are vying for the contract, which has an initial value estimated at $4 billion to $7 billion, with the possibility of many more aircraft in the future as the Brazilian Air Force seeks to revamp its fleet of fighters.

Rousseff had met for over three hours with Defense Minister Nelson Jobim on Tuesday to discuss the budget restrictions, and while Jobim told reporters that the pending deal would not be impacted by the cuts he also said there were "no budget expenditures this year" for the fighter contract.

Jobim had also stressed the military would take its time to choose the best bid and begin complex negotiations on technical matters and the terms of the deal, but said he expected a decision this year.

Sources in the president's office and the defense ministry told AFP that the purchase process was ongoing.

The intense competition for the contract has dragged on for years, with Rousseff inheriting the purchase decision from her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The shortlist for the jets is made up of the French-made Rafale, Sweden's Gripen NG and the US F-18 Super Hornet, and speculation has swirled about which bid is in favour.

Lula had declared a preference for French planes but ultimately left the decision to Rousseff, who has not shown any favoritism during her first 45 days in office.

Brazil insists on the unrestricted transfer of technology as part of the deal, as it intends to use the vast project to develop its aviation industry and become a regional provider.

In January the French defense minister said his country was confident of scooping the contract. Earlier this week the Pentagon assured that Brazil would get a "significant transfer of technology" by buying US fighter planes from Boeing.

You would think that if Brazil was on a budget that they would want a lower maintenance aircraft like the Gripen. Having a single engine is a huge plus in this regard.

Swedish jets have NEVER been flown in combat, have no experance at all..

It would be a joke to buy from a country that has never fought a war,and never grew any balls...

What is your logic? You should think about why swedes never been in war? Not only because the people here love peace, but also, most importantly, their powerful military forces, and their strong industries. Apparently you have no idea about the status of the Swedish jet in the world market. " Low price, but high performance" that is Swedish jet.

Just another dumbass..,sweeds are stupid.

Hehe, John Wayne scared? Neva! But he does sound a bit worried the hornet is gonna get whipped :)

Anyway, gripen is pretty popular in this bid. Mostly because brazil is developing into a world power and the gripen offered partnership, which the gripen team needs anyway.

In recent air combat simulations the Gripen was very impressive, often beating more expensive American and Russian jets.

The kind of logic that because it has never been in battle it won't work is absurd. you know the first F-16 was unknown until it was first used. I never succeeded in battle until I shot down a Sukhoi -7 during the 1973 Yom Kippur War with my first ever use of an AK-47.

I thank Bofors for that, when I trained on their 40 mm Anti-Aircraft Gun as a Royal Navy Sea Cadet.

I was the first person in the world to drive a million miles in a Saab automobile, with the original engine and turbo. Sweden has phenomenal engineering which is why the US Marines use the Swedish Anti-Tank weapon. The Saab Tunnan, under the UN was untested until it bombed the rebels in Katanga.

The Spitfire was untried until it saved the World during the Battle of Britain.

At least the NG Gripen can super-cruise which is more than the F-35 can do. I think I have made my point

@ millionileman.

You claim that you shot down a Sukhoi-7 by your Ak-47? I really hope my english command is not good to understand correctly your comment. Otherwise, i can't imagine that a fighter jet was shot down by the rifle. You must have ridden an old russian Po-2 and shot from your window while it passed! Geez!

@ Kina_observer

I'm sorry, I'm forced to comment on this. I don't know if you're Swedish or not, but this deluded state that so many Swedes live in, about their country being "neutral", is truly getting beyond the point of toleration. Your government is as active, if not more, than most other governments in armed combat around the planet. You have never been neutral in modern times, you have been lied to the entire time, and it's high time that the gullible, ignorant citizens of this country began asking "why?" a little more. Some critical thinking goes a long way. Have a look at the flag on top of the palace on Skeppsholmen - the three pronged Swedish flag is the military flag; if I'm not mistaken, when this flag is raised, does this not mean the country is officially at war? Swedes, truly, I love you, but wake up!

@olerekcarctroll

"ts not even a Swedish jet" WRONG'1

it is designed and built by SAAB Aerospace in Linköping

"all the important parts are from BAE" WRONG'2

SAAB buys some sub components from BAE

"and if I understand correctly BAE is owned by Americans and the technology comes from the states" WRONG '3

BAE is a British owned company with a US subsidiary, SAAB & BAE sell technolgy to US aerospace manufacturers such as Boeing

3 strikes and you are out bye as*hole

@ Rick Methven

You are correct. In fact all weapons are heavily involved with foreign sub-contractors. No one nation is self-sufficient. That was my point all along. No one weapon is tested until the person using it is tested.

The basic designs are crucial and that is why Swedish engineering is so sound. It is very well thought out.

To @NoVaseline it is very simple a low flying jet fighter back then, was a jet powered beer can. Anyway the AK-47 had enough punch to tear through the plastic canopy and kill the pilot. I learned this from that Jane Fonda film when she was on an AA gun in Hanoi. There was a seen showing Vietcong shooting at USA F-4s with AKs. That's why it is such an effective rifle. It does not jam and has stopping power.

If you want to see how a bird can bring down a Viggen go to YouTube and key:

I think it goes to show just how good the NG Gripen is....the fact that the other major competitor is an older US plane. The Gripen is not top of the line by any means.
