1. Palme supported the Communist forces fighting in Vietnam and vigorously opposed the US. We now know the results: Unlike South Korea and Taiwan, Vietnam is mired in a Socialist cesspool, one that would have pleased Palme greatly. The defeat of the US in Vietnam was also followed by the former USSR expanding its tentacles into Africa, afflicting African countries with stifling Socialist economics from which they have yet to recover. These countries can blame Palme for his contribution.
2. Together with other perfidious Socialists like Bruno Kreisky and Willy Brandt, Palme supported the terrorist PLO and attacked Israel consistently; he seemed to have a special fondness for the arch-terrorist Yassir AraTrash. The most egregious pronouncement of Palme concerned the 1982 retaliatory operation of Israel against the PLO terrorists in Lebanon. Palme went as far as comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. As a Swede, Palme should know a thing or two about Nazi Germany: while the allies were fighting for democracy, Sweden was selling Germany war materials and allowed German troops to cross Swedish territory.
As long as people like me are alive, the conduct of Palme and his country shall not be forgotten.
You should travel to Viet nam to see what our american friends did there on innocent people...
Regarding our Olof we are missing him because he was a man, only a man but a man.
I am sick of this fake guiltiness.
How do you call a jewish child killed by the nazis,,, an innocent.
How do you call a palestinian child killed by tsahal...an innocent
How do you call an lybian child killed by kadhafi...an innocent
Nobody has got the heart's monopoly.
Never forget.
Read Mankell please.
Olof Palme was, is and will be an eternal face of Sverige, whatever yu like or dislike.
Gods have mercy of stupidity and ignorance which kill.
I am tired of blaming the govts in my own country as well, but then again.. we the nation select the govt again and again...we would protest and go for so called WAR against the US forces, while we would keep our mouths shut when our own govts kill us and our families mentally, emotionally and physically! What the hell.
Same goes for you guys who didn't do anything while he was in power. Atleast, peaceful protests could have been made.. but nopes... the nation i guess wanted him
Think about all innocents killed in the name of freedom...
There's nothing worth commemorating about him. He accomplished absolutely nothing, zilch, of value.
Many in the right wing saw Palme as a betrayer of his own class. He came from a wealthy borguoeis family but followed his principles to engage in the worker movement.
I agree with uname that these message boards are by no means represenntative of the Swedish people. A lot of the people who post here aren't Swedish and a lot of others, like buschman don't even live in Sweden but in America where I used to live.
There's some strange things going on in the US right now....
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20110223/NEWS0201/102230378/Tennessee-bill-would-jail-Shariah-followers
The PLO was first and foremost a political organization and the representatives for the Palestinian people, and Palme obviously supported their struggle for freedom from Israeli occupation.
What would be strange would be if he supported the Israeli state which has killed many more innocent civlians than all the palestinian terrorist organizations combined, like the US government does.
that's funny! Thanks for the Sunday afternoon laugh.
Care to explain what is "funny"? Do you deny that the PLO was the representative of the repressed palestinian people? Do you deny that the US supports a state that has killed many thousands of innocen civilians? Do you deny the characterisation of Palestine as occupied and repressed by Israel?
Please do elaborate....
I deny nothing about the PLO especially the fact that they're terrorists and murderers.
I don't deny that the US has supported many states that have killed many thousands of innocent civilians: Iraq, Egypt, Lybia, and others. I'm not proud of the fact that my country supported these governments who were supressing and killing their own people.
Maybe the US will change some things now. Maybe these uprisings in the Middle East will change some things. But the real crazy religious fanatics, the suicide bombers, will continue to kill their own innocent brothers.
And of course Palestine characterizes itself as being occupied and repressed by Israel, the same way North Korea characterizes itself as being attacked by South Korea and the West.
Palastine claims to want peace while they're planning unprovoked attacks to kill innocent civilians and keep a conflict going, the same as North Korea does. I could go on but what's the point? People who support lies and terrorism won't believe or admit the truth.
If Palestine wanted peace with Israel, they could have it. No matter what you say here, everyone knows the truth. So go ahead and reply how you wish. No one will believe it except the other fanatics.
He is was a man with guts and i am not at all a left guy,,,
Tomorrow in Sweden and worldwide millions of people will remember him.
I shall go to Sveavägen with my son, put nice blommors and pray.
You have "history upside down", and this is indeed the name of a book by David Meir-Levi.
In addition to what USCitizen has already said, let me enlighten you:
1. The PLO and Hamas are dedicated to the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people; Hamas Charter is online and you can read their commitment yourself. Do you deny this?
2. Since the Peel Commission of 1936-7, the arabs in Judea, Samaria and Gaza have been offered a state time and again (1947 is the best known example, but also 1967, 2000, etc.). The Arab answer has always been "no", as in the Khartoum "three no's of 1967" - no negotiations, no peace no recognition of Israel. Do you deny this?
3. By international law, the San Remo Conference of 1920 gave the tiny sliver of land called "Palestine" to the Jewish people. It is the Arabs who are occupiers, not the Jews who are there by dint of international law. You can read the details in an online article entitled "A mandate for Israel", by the eminent jurist Doug Feith - google it to learn something.
4. I could go on and on but note that the Arab propaganda which you and leftists propagate fails to convince many, including myself. We regard Israel as our sister-democracy and will support her to the best of our ability. As the former Spanish premier (Jose Maria Aznar) said in his famous article, "if Israel goes down, we all go down" - for some erudition, you can google this article too.
Nothing new.
Thank you for your explanation. I have a lot of respect for someone such as yourself who took the time to learn a language and be so interested in a country he's never visited. Or have you? If not, you should. It's really a nice place.
Being from the Southern US, I have those same redneck American ways you're talking about. Thanks again.
I had to get offline last night... the wife came home ;O)) Anyway. I still own a home in East Tennessee and I'm moving back there in 18 months. It's a beautiful part of the country being near the Smokies. I'll miss all this cold and snow though. I haven'y seen much of the country here but hope to before I leave. Good luck with your travels, wherever they may lead you.
Cool hobby! Cred.
