Olof Palme paid homage in Stockholm

Prime Minister Olof Palme who was murdered 25 years ago on the 28th February was paid homage today at a seminar in Stockholm. Former ministers, party colleagues and family members all paid tribute at the ABF-huset in Stockholm.

"Olof Palme's thoughts and actions have influence upon many people today" Pierre Schori, former deputy foreign minister told guests at the seminar.

Monday 28th February is the 25th anniversary of the assassination of Olof Palme, a case which is still officially open with Swedish police.

Saturday's seminar was organized by the Olof Palme International Centre. Former ministers, party colleagues and family members rallied in the ABF-house - which has also renamed one of its meeting rooms to The Palme Room.

Ingvar Carlsson, who knew Palme for 30 years and became his successor as prime minister, spoke of his tremendous political nerve, presence and ability to communicate.

"I honestly admired Olof Palme's ability to inspire" Carlsson told those present.

Carlsson emphasized Palme's breadth. "He was an ideologue and practitioner, brilliant in both the spoken and written word on both the national and international stage."

"He had the ability to face a problem in small town Sweden one week and stand on the UN's podium the next" Carlsson continued.

Lena Hjelm-Wallen was elected to parliament in 1968 and was minister for education in Palme's government, and later foreign minister.

"Olof Palme opened the eyes of many of us to the world, but we must also remember his extremely important impact on domestic politics" she told the attendees at ABF-huset

Olof Palme was murdered by an unknown assassin as he made his was home from the cinema with his wife on the evening of the 28th February 1986. His murder, which remains unsolved, is often seen as a watershed in Swedish society.

The murder of any human, politicians included, should be condemned unambiguously. That said, I have many memories related to Palme, none pleasant.

1. Palme supported the Communist forces fighting in Vietnam and vigorously opposed the US. We now know the results: Unlike South Korea and Taiwan, Vietnam is mired in a Socialist cesspool, one that would have pleased Palme greatly. The defeat of the US in Vietnam was also followed by the former USSR expanding its tentacles into Africa, afflicting African countries with stifling Socialist economics from which they have yet to recover. These countries can blame Palme for his contribution.

2. Together with other perfidious Socialists like Bruno Kreisky and Willy Brandt, Palme supported the terrorist PLO and attacked Israel consistently; he seemed to have a special fondness for the arch-terrorist Yassir AraTrash. The most egregious pronouncement of Palme concerned the 1982 retaliatory operation of Israel against the PLO terrorists in Lebanon. Palme went as far as comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. As a Swede, Palme should know a thing or two about Nazi Germany: while the allies were fighting for democracy, Sweden was selling Germany war materials and allowed German troops to cross Swedish territory.

As long as people like me are alive, the conduct of Palme and his country shall not be forgotten.

Dear Sir,

You should travel to Viet nam to see what our american friends did there on innocent people...

Regarding our Olof we are missing him because he was a man, only a man but a man.

I am sick of this fake guiltiness.

How do you call a jewish child killed by the nazis,,, an innocent.

How do you call a palestinian child killed by tsahal...an innocent

How do you call an lybian child killed by kadhafi...an innocent

Nobody has got the heart's monopoly.

Never forget.

Am I right to assume very few swedes have a positive image of this man.
01:04 February 27, 2011 by Gabin
What do the-young- swedes know about their history,,,so lite.

Read Mankell please.

Olof Palme was, is and will be an eternal face of Sverige, whatever yu like or dislike.

Gods have mercy of stupidity and ignorance which kill.

Homage????? Pass the barf bag! Sorry to tell you this kids, but this marxist rat is no small measure the reason Sweden is the way it is today, i.e. an cauldron of experimental multicultiralism which, clearly, to most Swedes is a damned and insulting fiasco that should never had happened. He was closer to Walter Ulbricht and Erich Honecker than any democratically elected politician. Ever. How you can stand stand there and sing songs to this piece of totalitarian vermin is beyond me. Let's dump him where he belongs, on the scrap heap of Swedish history. Demote him to a sad mistake, and a foot note in Swedish history. He is probably the worst politician Sweden ever saw and grave mistake if there ever was one. Let's hope that he is forgotten. Soon. The sooner the better. He is precisely the kind of politician Sweden does NOT need.

Though I am not a SWED, but just a message to those who disliked Olof, don't hate the leader that was chosen by you yourself. If the nation, majority of them who are old and mature, didn't take any action when he was working improperly... then the nation DID deserve that leader. I do not know Olaf how good or bad he was but I do know... we get the leaders we deserve.

I am tired of blaming the govts in my own country as well, but then again.. we the nation select the govt again and again...we would protest and go for so called WAR against the US forces, while we would keep our mouths shut when our own govts kill us and our families mentally, emotionally and physically! What the hell.

Same goes for you guys who didn't do anything while he was in power. Atleast, peaceful protests could have been made.. but nopes... the nation i guess wanted him

Olof understands quickly that US international policy is just the biggest lie of the modern world and he died,,,

Think about all innocents killed in the name of freedom...

Palme was a genuinely nasty politician who attacked the person, not the thinking, and polarized Swedish politics. We're still suffering the after-effects of the debate tone that he set.

There's nothing worth commemorating about him. He accomplished absolutely nothing, zilch, of value.
11:39 February 27, 2011 by johnny1939
Good Riddance !!!!!! Of course the socialists are missing him. Sweden is starting to get itself out of the socialist disaster that we have suffered for so long.

buschmann: Not really, I think most people have a positive view of him, the extreme right wing dislike him alot and they are generally very active on Internet comment fields like these. Don't be fooled, this message board are by no means represenntative of the Swedish people.

Many in the right wing saw Palme as a betrayer of his own class. He came from a wealthy borguoeis family but followed his principles to engage in the worker movement.
16:21 February 27, 2011 by UScitizen
Palme supported the PLO and the islamic terrorists who kill their own people in the name of their religion and their honor. The world needs to be cleansed of those types that he supported.

I agree with uname that these message boards are by no means represenntative of the Swedish people. A lot of the people who post here aren't Swedish and a lot of others, like buschman don't even live in Sweden but in America where I used to live.

There's some strange things going on in the US right now....

@USCitizen

The PLO was first and foremost a political organization and the representatives for the Palestinian people, and Palme obviously supported their struggle for freedom from Israeli occupation.

What would be strange would be if he supported the Israeli state which has killed many more innocent civlians than all the palestinian terrorist organizations combined, like the US government does.

@ uname

that's funny! Thanks for the Sunday afternoon laugh.
17:16 February 27, 2011 by uname
@USCitizen

Care to explain what is "funny"? Do you deny that the PLO was the representative of the repressed palestinian people? Do you deny that the US supports a state that has killed many thousands of innocen civilians? Do you deny the characterisation of Palestine as occupied and repressed by Israel?

Please do elaborate....
18:15 February 27, 2011 by UScitizen
@ uname

I deny nothing about the PLO especially the fact that they're terrorists and murderers.

I don't deny that the US has supported many states that have killed many thousands of innocent civilians: Iraq, Egypt, Lybia, and others. I'm not proud of the fact that my country supported these governments who were supressing and killing their own people.

Maybe the US will change some things now. Maybe these uprisings in the Middle East will change some things. But the real crazy religious fanatics, the suicide bombers, will continue to kill their own innocent brothers.

And of course Palestine characterizes itself as being occupied and repressed by Israel, the same way North Korea characterizes itself as being attacked by South Korea and the West.

Palastine claims to want peace while they're planning unprovoked attacks to kill innocent civilians and keep a conflict going, the same as North Korea does. I could go on but what's the point? People who support lies and terrorism won't believe or admit the truth.

If Palestine wanted peace with Israel, they could have it. No matter what you say here, everyone knows the truth. So go ahead and reply how you wish. No one will believe it except the other fanatics.

Can i remind You that Olof never kill anybody but was killed by ,,,

He is was a man with guts and i am not at all a left guy,,,

Tomorrow in Sweden and worldwide millions of people will remember him.

Note to uname:

You have "history upside down", and this is indeed the name of a book by David Meir-Levi.

In addition to what USCitizen has already said, let me enlighten you:

1. The PLO and Hamas are dedicated to the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people; Hamas Charter is online and you can read their commitment yourself. Do you deny this?

2. Since the Peel Commission of 1936-7, the arabs in Judea, Samaria and Gaza have been offered a state time and again (1947 is the best known example, but also 1967, 2000, etc.). The Arab answer has always been "no", as in the Khartoum "three no's of 1967" - no negotiations, no peace no recognition of Israel. Do you deny this?

3. By international law, the San Remo Conference of 1920 gave the tiny sliver of land called "Palestine" to the Jewish people. It is the Arabs who are occupiers, not the Jews who are there by dint of international law. You can read the details in an online article entitled "A mandate for Israel", by the eminent jurist Doug Feith - google it to learn something.

4. I could go on and on but note that the Arab propaganda which you and leftists propagate fails to convince many, including myself. We regard Israel as our sister-democracy and will support her to the best of our ability. As the former Spanish premier (Jose Maria Aznar) said in his famous article, "if Israel goes down, we all go down" - for some erudition, you can google this article too.

@ us citizen: I kinda fell into the swedish thing by accident. When I was living in Minneapolis, I lived across the street from the american swedish institute. At that time (mid 90's) I was working 2nd shift as a welder/fabricator and needed something to do in the afternoon, before going to work. Even though my heritage is norwegian/finnish/swedish, that had nothing to do with my decision to study the swedish language. I would have much rather taken a class in swedish wood carving , but that course was only offered in the evenings. When I started my first swedish language class I soon found out all my classmates were semi-retired professionals. There was one fellow in particular who was very snooty. He was a lawyer, I decided that I wasn't going to take any of his crap and I set out to bury him at the language game. When he finaly figured out he couln't beat me he quit! The teacher ," a fine native swedish gal" who thought I was hot ,took me under her wing and the rest of the students soon came to accept me. I stuck with those classes for 5 years, over the last 15 years or so I have logged thousands of hours reading and listening to swedish, and I regularly speak swedish on skype with natives. Sometimes my REDNECK american ways can be offensive to swedes and swedophiles, but like any true american , I don't really give a sh...t. Sometimes I wonder how many working class americans men, who have never even been to sweden and learned the language as an adult are fluent in the swedish language. I don't know, but I think they could all be counted on one hand, and with a few fingers left over.

America is blank with what's going on in the real world.

Nothing new.
22:10 February 27, 2011 by UScitizen
@ buschmann

Thank you for your explanation. I have a lot of respect for someone such as yourself who took the time to learn a language and be so interested in a country he's never visited. Or have you? If not, you should. It's really a nice place.

Being from the Southern US, I have those same redneck American ways you're talking about. Thanks again.

@ UScitizen: Never been to sweden, but I have been toying with the idea for many years. I have been to Tennesse many times, I love that western N.C. / eastern T.N.region. Fact is when I eventually retire I hope to find A piece of land in the Cherokee N.C. area. If I do visit sweden it will be for the purpose of visiting the national parks, such as, abisko, vadvetjåka, sarek, stora sjöfallet, padjelanta, muddus, and pieljekaise, ofcourse not all on the same trip.
06:10 February 28, 2011 by UScitizen
@ buschmann

I had to get offline last night... the wife came home ;O)) Anyway. I still own a home in East Tennessee and I'm moving back there in 18 months. It's a beautiful part of the country being near the Smokies. I'll miss all this cold and snow though. I haven'y seen much of the country here but hope to before I leave. Good luck with your travels, wherever they may lead you.
