Subway plans massive Sweden expansion

US sandwich chain Subway, recently crowned the largest restaurant chain in the world, is planning an extensive expansion in Sweden, the firm has confirmed.

"According to strategy plan there will be around 240 restaurants in Sweden before the end of 2015 and I am confident that our team in Sweden will achieve or even surpass this goal," Fred DeLuca, Subway's founder and president, said in a statement on Friday.

Subway, which was founded by DeLuca as a 17-year-old in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965, recently surpassed fellow US fast food provider McDonald's to become the largest restaurant chain worldwide.

From humble beginnings in the US northeast, the firm has grown to 34,246 outlets in 95 countries.

The plans for Subway's Sweden expansion were presented on Thursday on the first day of Fred DeLuca's three day long trip to the country.

Since opening its first franchise in Stockholm in 1999, Subway currently operates 81 restaurants across Sweden, a figure which DeLuca hopes to triple in less than five years.

While most Subway restaurants are concentrated in Sweden's larger cities, plans call for the chain to increase its foot print in other regions as well.

With the Swedish appetite for fast food is reported to be on the rise and Subway now plans to cash in on this trend.

"Swedes eat more fast food than ever and we are seeing increased demand for a fresher alternative to more traditional fast food," Michael Von Bargen of Subway Sweden said.

"We have set an ambitious but realistic goals and to achieve this, we are currently working hard to recruit ambitious franchisees and to identify new strategic locations to establish our business."

Just what Sweden needs from the Worlds largest fast food chain.

Tasteless, disgusting and unfresh food, akin to sucking on a turd flavoured cushion.
16:01 March 11, 2011 by soultraveler3
I agree. There are so many sandwhich chains that can be brought over that are so much better. Many swedes tend to like blandish food though so it might work lol.

Craptastic!

I actually don't mind Subway, although there are way better places to eat. But Subway in Stockholm costs way too much and will probably be a bust. The existing stores are always empty and the prices are ridiculous
16:10 March 11, 2011 by star10
In the land infested with tasteless people (Swedes:)), subway will have a big market. But I like subway. It is healthy.
16:19 March 11, 2011 by buschmann
Will the sub shops be located inside of wallmarts?
16:29 March 11, 2011 by Åskar
Whyever do people refer to Subway, McDonald's and their ilk as "restaurants"?
16:33 March 11, 2011 by heu
I like subway a lot, but I refuse to go to one in Sweden for the prices are abusive. While you can get a 30cm sub for as low as $5 in the US, in Sweden that is not even enough for the 15cm ones, not even the ones on discount.
17:29 March 11, 2011 by Syftfel
I hope then that they rename it to something more palatable according to Swedish language use. "Subway" does not fit Swedish language practice with the "w" and a dipthong. How do you put this in plural and definite grammar form? Perhaps "Tunnelbanan", directly translated from English, might be appropriate? But do NOT keep it as "Subway". This would be a gross linguistic violation to most Swedes.
19:20 March 11, 2011 by Yanksalot
Syftfel: the one in my city (in sweden) is called subway. Guess you will have to live with the gross linguistic violation.
22:48 March 11, 2011 by Elvine
Syftfel, there's been Subway restaurants in Sweden for about 12 years. No, this is not a gross nguistic violation to most Swedes. We are pretty used to English names on stores, brands and stuff. The plural is not a problem either. You could say "En Subway. flera Subway ( a Subway. many Subways) eller "en Subway-restaurang, flera Subway-restauranger (a Subway restaurant, many Subway restaurants) Subway-restaurangen (The Subway restaurant) etc.

"Tunnelbanan"? I guess that was some kind of joke.
04:36 March 12, 2011 by Marc the Texan
I honestly never could understand why Subway was so popular in Malmo.
07:15 March 12, 2011 by mikewhite
No, Elvine; "restaurant" : that's the joke !

I have bought a 'Sub' once.

I was in Alicante and nothing else was open in the area.

It was tasteless crap masquerading as food, NEVER again

Forget Subway. When is Baja Fresh coming to Sweden?
19:05 March 12, 2011 by wenddiver
Subway, the hell ith that, go to one of the following:

1. Wendy's- The Baconator- Three large beef patties with Cheese and topped off with lots of real Bacon!!!!!! Coomes with French Fries and a giant Coca-Cola!!! Ask for extra salt Packets and Mayonaise. Screem Odin and dive in.

2. Back Yard Bar-B-Que- Lots of big burgers, they start off with 2/3 of a Pound of real beef and then add things like Mayonaise, lots of Bacon, Cheese and Chili! After the burger and spiced fries order the Chili, Comes with a giant Dr. Pepper.

3. McDonalds- I think these quys are kind of ligt weights, except for their French Fries which are my favorite, get the Bacon, Cheese Angus Burger, very good! Comes with a giant Beverage.

4. Steak and Shake- Company grinds up large steak into Hamburgers and serves with giant Malts. Resturants are decorated like the 1950s.

5. Taco Bell- A box of twelve Tacos, you can carry home to the front of your TV!

6. Beer Barn- Just what it says a barn you drive through and they will put Whiskey or beer in your trunk and you pay without even getting out of the Car!!! Drive home and drink a gallon of Makers Mark Whiskey while sitting on the floor in front of your TV as a quick meal substitute.
21:07 March 12, 2011 by mikewhite
Must have missed that corner of Malmö ...

PS thought all those firms called 'Bell' were American telephone companies.

calebian22, I LOVE Baja Fresh. I can't figure out why so many of them went out of business. I guess when people want fast food they dont want to wait 10 minutes. Seems worth it to get freshly prepared food and ingredients.

I agree with prior comments, not a huge fan of subway. Not to mention, like all fast food, subway is loaded with salt. 99% of fast food is crap. Better to get up a little early and make yourself a sensible lunch if possible.

Just what Sweden needs, to resemble an american strip mall. Maybe in 10 years every Swede can be as fat as the average american as well...yay.

Subway is ok and you can build your sandwich anyway you like. In my book Subway is a better choice for a fast meal than most places. Personally I like the "veggie" I consider it a healthier snack than pizza or kaboobs or a räksmörgås slathered w/ mayo. But that is me a weirdo I suppose.
22:38 March 13, 2011 by muscle
Well, Subway is my favorite at least. design your own, and yes less fatty compared to others!

Nothing better than southern US BBQ, but I'd rather see a White Castle here than Subway.

Oh my god a big mac is healthier than a Sub!!!!

I have never been to Subway in Stockholm but from my experience in US subway is better than Macdo.

Subway in NY can be bought as cheap as 5 USD which is around 40 SEK for a foot-long. But in Sweden you can only get a 6 inch for 45 SEK. the prize is insane. perhaps bcos the Swedish tax office takes too much money so they have to sell that way. One day I brought some discount coupons to have lunch with a friend. with the coupon a complete meal costs 65 SEK for each of us, and the coupon upgrades the sub from 6 inch to foot-long. without the coupon the prize for foot-long meal is more than 80 SEK. suddenly we realized how much more food you can get at a Chinese lunch buffet, for 75 SEK only, so we went there instead.

Sweden doesnt have lots of snacks for sale. it's always kebab, max burger, falafel, pizza, and sushi. when in NY i could get into any diner and buy whatever good snack i want for a decent price. like a small cup of fried noodle, Shish-kebab, Chinese desserts, bubble tea, japanese cakes, all for 3-4 USD and you enjoy it. srsly, scandinavia def has food crisis.
