Malmö celebrates 300,000 residents

Malmö's main square Stortorget hosted a 4,000 people strong party on Saturday to celebrate the southern Swedish city's growth to over 300,000 inhabitants.

Within five minutes the 4,000 specially baked chocolate cakes were exhausted as residents gathered to celebrate a new milestone in their city's dramatic growth in popularity in recent years.

The occasion, and the chocolate cake, attracted Malmö residents of all ages, the local Sydsvenskan daily reported.

"It was great that so many young people came, I thought that a lot of pensioners would come," Kenneth Hvarvenius at Malmö municipality told the newspaper.

The street party, held in the warming March sunshine, offered entertainment, balloons for the kids, and coffee to go with the cake. The festivities were however slightly premature with a couple of weeks to go before the milestone is confirmed.

"Today we are 299,723 inhabitants but at some point under March we will break the barrier," Harvenius said.

Malmö mayor Ilmar Reepalu held a speech in which he referred to Malmö's regeneration and renewal, using the architectural symbols of old new - the Kockums dockyard crane and the Turning Torso skyscraper - as metaphors for the remarkable transformation.

"Most of those moving here are young between 20 and 29-years-old who want to study and like this international city. The future is in the place to which the young want to move and where they want to live," he said.

"Let's say welcome to Malmö's three hundred thousandth resident."

Malmö, Sweden's third largest city, welcomed 20,431 new inhabitants during 2010 and for the first time its residents gave birth to 5,000 children. Half of those moving into the city are aged 20-29-years-old.

If the forecasts prove correct, the city will not have to wait too long before the chocolate cake and clowns are brought out to play again, with a total of 400,000 residents expected by 2032.

Strangely there is a lot of white flight to surrounding areas in Skåne, which is forcing up house prices all over Skåne.

Growth in Malmö is not being managed properly.

The second hand market for apartments in Malmö is extremely costly to those who can not get get a first hand apartment quickly. I have seen apartments going for two to three times that of the monthly avgift.

Apartments designed for one person or a couple are of no use to a family, which has led to overcrowding in many apartments.

Malmö needs to build a lot of appropiately sized apartments and housing, but vested interests are stopping that. In turn that is leading to discontent amongst the population.
10:52 March 13, 2011 by Rishonim
Ilmar Reepalu speech should have also included the following " And yes people of Malmö, we have rid the city of the Jews in order to make room for the new arrivals. Welcome to Malmö, the only Jewless city in Europe.

Is there something special about the number 300k? I'm confused as to why, exactly, they're celebrating.
11:13 March 13, 2011 by wishUlistenup
How many of those 300,000 are actually "Swedes" and not immigrants?

How does a native born in Malmo feel when he sees a person looking like from the middle east speaking a typical Malmo dialect?

Our culture has been shattered and smashed by too much openmindedness and tax sacrifice for pity for people who should not be part of the 300,000 list!

I want our true blue and yellow back and not the enforced mish mash of other's rituals and beliefs.

Why is this 300,000 mark something to celebrate ? ? ?
11:53 March 13, 2011 by truthworthy
Since Skåne is strong hold for SD and its bigots (anti-semitic, Islamaphobes), I guess they are the ones moving to there, while everyone else (including Jews) is moving to the more tolerant areas of Sweden.
12:58 March 13, 2011 by Bille
@byke, I agree, It took just 2 hrs for one immigrant basher to write none obtuse, unenlightened comment. @wishUlistenup. Wish you'd listen up and get that wishful thinking off your head. We are in a world where no race lives on it's own as a country. Malmö, sweden and the rest of europe will always have blacks, arabs, latinos etc as it's citizen.

"I want our true blue and yellow back and not the enforced mish mash of other's rituals and beliefs."..... Pure racist!

Rick,

You are a British troll. Probably stereotypically bad teeth, too.

We British have good dentists - they just don't con us all into swapping our own teeth for pottery ones.

On the numerology, what relation does 4000 have with 300000 ?
22:53 March 13, 2011 by Boyfriend
That is very positive to see Malmö is growing!

I want to see 100000 Jews /100000 Christians /100000 Muslims to share the same place. If i become the Malmö governor I would build Mosque/Church/Synagogue /extra all under one building and every month I would teach them a lesson about how to help and love each others because the media has recently brained washed many .

As a Muslims we have welcomed our cousins the (Jews) to come and live with us when they had problem in Europe. the same USA has given place to more million Swedes when they had problem back in 18-19 Talet.

No Muslims Jews or Christian is our enemy. The biggest enemy is our foolishness being illiterate, being racist, We should not allow the hate to take place in our hearts. We are all children of Adam our father is the same . One day it would proven that all human share the same genetic code once our technology get a bit more advanced.

Cheers guys and gratis to Malmö :)

According to @ Rick he is the only English speaking expat in all of Sweden. Shockingly, Rick, you are not the only one here.

Yes, we should celebrate the growth of a stone age fascist, superstitious, sexist, hate filled "religion" and ideology that demands the destruction of our "depraved" culture. Sounds like a winning strategy.
23:04 March 14, 2011 by mikewhite
Birmingham probably has more Muslims than the whole of Sweden, and on the whole everyone gets on very well with each other there. Some people on here sound a bit like the late Enoch Powell.
00:45 March 15, 2011 by LeoKinmann
perhaps the problem of immigrants not coming in terms with swedes is the result of self-fulfilled prophecy from both sides. i was in NY for a year. the ppl there, albeit stressed and not always friendly, at least recognize the tradition and rituals of other cultures, something i didnt feel much of in sweden.
08:45 March 15, 2011 by technoviking
@LeoKinmann

Haha. Ask the average native New Yorker what they think of Islam after 9/11. You'll be in for a wake up call. It may be pretty diverse for the most part, but Islam is not taken to kindly in the outer boroughs and rightfully so. No one likes a "tradition" of despising our way of life.

Peter King just started congressional hearings on the dangers of Islam and is popular as he&& in his neck of the woods.

@Boyfriend you're insane. Literally. Not everyone is a religious whack job you fool! Many of us are living in the real world not a fairy tale...

@technoviking

I never said I was the only English speaking expat in Sweden. But anyway I am living in Sweden, unlike you, who just come on this forum to troll.
18:15 March 15, 2011 by technoviking
@ Rick

Haha. Thanks for proving my point. Once again, Rick's only response to anyone who disagrees with him is to say they are sinister outside forces and that he's the only REAL expat on the forum.

Been in Sweden for a while Rick. As have many of us. You are not alone, you old dinosaur.

Malmø is unfortunately turning into a third world pile of thrash.

Rosengården is a hellhole which ethnic swedes avoid at all costs.

Ilmar Reepalu is celebrating the fact that the city has been ethnicly cleansed of jews.

In the leftist mind, its apparently "progressive" to have population growth. No matter if its caused by muslim colonization.

Demography is destiny, and the statistics dont lie. Malmø is poised to become muslim majority within a few decades.

Malmø is headed for a leadership role, a model city for european islamification. It will become a center for the distribution of muslim ideology and propaganda, and a breeding ground for terrorist cells.

This will all happen while the swedish state is appeasing the colonizers, and "celebrating diversity".

I think the New Yorkers realise that the 11 Sep terrorists were not representative of the faith that they were proclaiming to be theirs, just as people realise that not all Christians go round killing birth control clinic staff.
