Swedes back Libya deployment: poll

Nine out ten Swedes support the UN-backed mission to stop Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi with a vast majority backing Swedish involvement in the military operation in the north African country.

Some 65 percent of Swedes supported sending JAS Gripen aircraft to bomb Libya, according to a Demoskop poll published in the Expressen daily.

Foreign minister Carl Bildt meanwhile declined to give any confirmation on how imminent Swedish involvement in the UN mission is.

"We don't know, because we don't know how the operation is going to be organised yet," Bildt said.

Bildt however said that in his opinion, Sweden should lend its active support to the mission.

"My view is that Sweden should take part," he told the newspaper.

On his personal blog, Bildt underlined that the focus and most difficult challenge facing the mission was the political attempts to build a functioning Libya after Qaddafi.

As the aerial bombardment of Libyan targets entered its third night, the leadership of the mission remained unclear with participating countries unable to agree on whether NATO should oversee the military operation.

There is also some discussion over whether the UN Security Council Resolution 1973 allows for the direct targeting of Muammar Qaddafi.

US president Barack Obama outlined the US position that it would like to see the end of Qaddafi's 42 year rule, but was keen to stress that the bombing was intended to offer protection to Libyan citizens.

UK prime minster David Cameron meanwhile argued that the resolution supports the direct targeting of the dictator if it would prevent the attacks on rebel forces and civilians.

Carl Bildt recognised that the ongoing operation was complex and revealed that a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday showed that there was dissension in how best to proceed.

"The longer the operation goes on the more demanding the more or less political issues that must be resolved will become," he said.

The Local reported on Monday that the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, stands firmly behind the Swedish deployment of JAS Gripen aircraft, with only the Sweden Democrats expressing opposition.

The Swedish Armed Forces have informed the government that it can send up to eight JAS Gripen planes to Libya.

The last time Swedish fighter aircraft participated in battle was almost 50 years ago, when J 29 "Flying Barrel" planes fought in the Congo in the early 60's.

This would be great, if it were based on some analysis and thought. Although I am an officer and still positive this, I'm afraid most people are thinking with their hearts and not with their brain.

As soon as the first soldiers come home in boxes, and we see airplanes going down on live TV, the same people will have the opposite opinion but still based on the same logics - all hearts and no brains.

It was exactly like this in the US. Bush sent thousands to Iraq and Afghanistan and every idiot was cheering. Anyone who said "hey, let's consider what this means!", was a traitor. Look at the fools now (not all Americans - the ones who were unreservedly for sending out troops). Many more have died than in 9/11 and terrorism activity has increased. Who's cheering now?

It's easy to be brave when it doesn't cost anything. Unfortunately, it's not until people start coming home in bags that the majority at home realise what could (most likely will!) actually happen.

Nice to hear this.

I am quite curious to know what the Swedes opinion is about going to Ivory Coast as well, where civil war is killing thousands of innocent people, mainly women and children, every day, without one single word spent by anybody...

I am waiting for French, American, Italian, Canadian, Swedish, etc... aircrafts going there as well to save many more lives that in Libya... because human life counts the same in both countries, isn't it? because future political alliances and oil supplies do not have anything to do with the Libyan case, isn't it? it is because we love Libyan people freedom and safety that we are fighting there, isn't it?

@ bocale1,

There is a simple check list you need.

1/ Do they have oil, gas or other minerl resrouces that can eb exploited?

2/ Do they have billions in banks that can be siezed?

Tick both of of those and the country will be invaded.

This is an interesting change of heart. Were these same people as interested in supporting George Bush when he went in to Iraq? Or is there a love for leftist Obama vs. hate Bush situation going on here? - After all, it's not our fault that our oil ended up under their sand.

Of all the creatures on this earth who should know better--it should be the Swedes. In my 61 years, no one has better demonstrated that peacemaking is good for jobs, prosperity, cultural development.

By as my first-generation Swedish-American mother would say to me, "There will always be war. Men LOVE war!" After staying out of war for nearly two centuries, Sweden breaks her winning streak over freaking Libya? Good grief! I had hoped my mother was wrong. Now we know that 9 out of 10 of today's Swedes approve of just blasting people.

How incredibly sad.

Perhaps,This military operation is an aggression action... Furthermore, more and more people will be die,no matter is libyan or American.

STOP IT. AND BLESS ALL OF YOU......

@eltechno

Where would Sweden be now if the European democracies had not stood up to the Kaiser in 1914? Or to the fuhrer in 1939? Or to the Soviet Union during the Cold War? Who knows? But "jobs, prosperity, [and] cultural development" would probably be in short supply.

Until now, modern Sweden has let other democracies carry its burden. Making no sacrifice itself, but happy to reap the unearned benefits it gained from the sacrifice of copious amounts of other peoples' blood and treasure.

If, as you suggest, riding on the backs of other countries' labour, can be called a "winning streak" Sweden has indeed won plenty. Just as those who stepped forward to do the right thing have lost plenty. Sadly, but for the common good, it is sometimes necessary to give as well as take.

I have to say, you sound to me like the sort of person happy to sit back and let other people do your share of the work. You will find, that is not a sustainable policy, and eventually, like Sweden today, you too must do your fair share.

It would have been nice to see some support for Bahrain. Unfortunately the world has become a useless place to live. The end times will be full with immorality, corruption, lawlessness, massacre, illegal bloodbath like this. This is seen as another intervention in the Muslim world. Protest must be directed only against Qaddafi, not collateral damage like this. As you sow so shall you will reap

Had Ghadaffi threatened another nation with invasion? No.

Had Saddam threatened another nation? Weel, he invaded Kuwait, gassed Kurds, invaded Iran and made threats to Israel.

So why would Swedes favor attacking Ghadaffi? Oh, yeah, because Obama favors it. Get real Swedes -- even Michael Moore and Ralph Nader are furious over Obama attacking Libya.

Does sweden realy want to go back to the age of warrior kings?
23:24 March 22, 2011 by eltechno
@ Robbin Hood

Do you really believe that Sweden had a stake in the outcome of World War I? That was a war fought by dissolute royal cousins over the size of their empires. What exactly would have changed for Sweden if Germany had won?

And then there is World War II. 96% of the combatants, casualties, and materiel losses in that conflict were suffered in the battle between the armies of Hitler and Stalin. Exactly how was Sweden to choose between those two? Even if you harbor the insane notion that the Brits were somehow a paragon of virtue and progress in spite of 300 years of brutal and murderous colonialism, adding that old imperialist Churchill to the mix does not exactly clarify things.

So there was tiny Sweden acting as a neutral should act. Harbor as many fleeing refugees as possible. And be prepared to go in after hostilities cease to help rebuild. Thousands of people survived the destruction of WW II because of Swedish relief efforts.

And then there are the superb efforts of peacemaking by heroes like Hammerskjold and Folke Berndotte.

I understand you reptilians actually believe warmaking has some forms of moral superiority attached. Well, you are wrong. And guys like you will ALWAYS be wrong. In your case, you can't even be bothered to learn the simple facts of history. But hey, I live in USA. Folks as confused as you are common in my life so try not convince me that your worldview has merit because it does not.
23:44 March 22, 2011 by Fascmouse
Friends! If you are going to criticize America, don't use the internet. It was invented by an American, Al Gore.

Thanks!
03:18 March 23, 2011 by jackx123
@Fascmouse: Al-gore huh? Get your facts right.

The Internet and Transmission Control Protocols were initially developed in 1973 by American computer scientist Vinton Cerf as part of a project sponsored by the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and directed by American engineer Robert Kahn.

The Internet began as a computer network of ARPA (ARPAnet) that linked computer networks at several universities and research laboratories in the United States. The World Wide Web was developed in 1989 by English computer scientist Timothy Berners-Lee for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

So to the point. Swedish airfare has to pay for the flying and training so why not spend the resources for the "European cause"
04:40 March 23, 2011 by sunnchilde
The Gripen has never seen actual combat? Never? So then you would think that Saab would be begging to deploy it's fighters, just to see how they do! How can Sweden effectively market the Gripen to foreign nations if by their own admission, none of their planes, not even one of them has EVER seen combat?

America has F-22s that have seen combat. How has the Gripen remained so virginal?
03:17 March 24, 2011 by wenddiver
@Glamshek-

The end times will be full with immorality, corruption, lawlessness, massacre, illegal bloodbath like this.

You can thank Al Quadia for the 911 invitation for the US to come play in the Muslim World and bring the Free world with it, hows that working for you, ten years and many bombing runs later??
08:39 March 24, 2011 by J Jack
So Sweden's Neutral stance has changed? Nor are they a member of NATO. I think that makes joining any military intervention a bit problematic. So the poll is hypothetical.
