If it is not illegal to sell sexual services, why is the pimp in prison? I read nothing that indicated he bought any sex from his girls.

^ Pimping is also illegal. "Selling sexual service is legal" is meant to mean that the actual prostitute is not criminalized. So, pimping yourself is legal, pimping someone else is illegal.

and with Sweden's sorry jail times the 2nd threat above is far more likely; if multiple rape gets you 6 months to 2 years in a very nice 4star jail, pimping gets you little to nothing, and when you are out.. you're not scared to go back for another holiday.

I get the feeling that most of the problems of prostitution/paying for sex are actually caused by its illegality. It would be better to tackle the poverty that leads women and men having to sell their bodies for sex rather than criminalising people who just need some human affection.

Comment: Kinda interesting -- in Sweden it is illegal to demand your wife have sex with you, but if you go out to purchase it that is also illegal.

A return flight to Berlin (1h from Stockholm or Göteborg) costs about 1000 SEK [1]. It's definitively much easier and cheaper to go and do it there than letting the police monitor your life here in Sweden and bust your balls!

Lots of interesting comments here. However statistics I have read indicate that it is more often men rather than feminists that have sought to criminalize the sale of sex. Not that both have not played a role but I don't think we can generalize to much as to the reason for it's criminalization.

Women tend to be more pragmatic about the sex issue and men have a need to control women in society.

Although I would agree that there is a duality of terms in the Swedish laws I would submit that @hoath has made the only significant point in this thread. It would serve us more to correct the underlying reason for sex as a commodity but one constant shines through. The difference in sexual needs for most men and women is, I feel, an underlying issue. Men need sex as physical desire and women more as an emotional one. Not that the two are that simple but the difference in needs is the reason that this problem exists. Fixing it is another problem all together.

Women and Men are wired exactly the same. If you offer sex most women, like most men want it. We have been socialized to believe that Women are more emotional and such. Go spend a week in Las Vegas and find out that Women think exactly the same way sexually. Well, that won't happen because itäs perfectly OK for other people's daughters, sisters, mothers to be prostitutes and forced to sell their own bodies to men who despices women.
