Swedish boy mauled by bear

A 12-year-old boy was bitten in both legs by a brown bear on Friday after he disturbed the hibernating animal while out skiing in Funäsdalsberget in northern Sweden.

The boy, together with four other friends, was skiing off piste at the ski resort in Härjedalen when they happened to ski over the bear's lair.

The bear woke up from his winter-long slumber and dragged one of the boys down into the lair, according to Jämtland police.

"He was able to get out of the lair by himself," said Emma Ekdahl at Jämtland police.

The injured boy, who was bitten in both legs and was clawed on his back, was rushed to hospital in Östersund. The hospital announced on Friday evening that the boy was feeling okay considering the circumstances.

After attacking the boy, the bear then fled from the scene. The county administrative board in Jämtland was contacted and a conservationist was called to assess whether the bear could pose a danger to others.

It is very rare that people are attacked by bears, said Ole-Gunnar Stöen at research organisation the Scandinavian Brown Bear Research Project.

"When they are attacked it is most commonly in connection to a hunt," he said.

Ole-Gunnar Stöen said that the main reason why hunters are attacked is that they get too close to the winter lair and disturb the bear.

Hope the young guy goes on alright and that the bear is not threatened with termination for reason of it's awakened 'bad mood behaviour'.

When I was 5 I had a one-eared teddy bear that used to attack me in the mornings. I tell you, I was glad to get up and go off to school (yep, in the UK in the 50's we went to school - full school - at age 5). I don't think the teddy bear attacks had any lasting negative effects on me, which is more than I can say for the school!

There is half the truth coming out here, by simply skiing over the den the bear does not get the chance to grab you and drag you in.

I would wager any money nearer the truth is four youths go out and after finding the den deliberately hang around and provoke the bear - bear gets annoyed and bites one of them - not unreasonable

Did they really mean to say, "A bear wakened from hibernation, . . . " Otherwise it was a sleeping bear that attacked!

Sounds like a punk learned a valuable life lesson.

Let the bear alone.

When skiing off piste, anything can happen and usually will.

Sweden has enough of a problem with murdering the wolves that did not bite anyone.

Concentrate on the poverty rate and the children who are living in poverty who are not eating or getting enough to eat, or who have ltttle heat in the winter and who are improperly clothed.

Leave the Bear alone, this was human caused.

@Rey Stockholm

Yes, those were my suspicions exactly.

I stumbled across a black bear last summer riding my bicycle. Fortuantely it ran the other way. Never provoke a hibernating bear. That was just plain stupid.

smiling canuk if you stumble across another bear riding your bicycle, after you get out of it's way again, take a photo for us to see then reprimand it for taking your bike without asking first!

I always thought bears are grumpy when they wake up, I know if I wake up bare I get grumpy too (unless of course there is a female bare as well)

the boys probably poked the sleepy bear with a stick so serves them right!

Do not kill the bear. Instead, put a heavy fine on the management of the resort for not looking after property.
