Juholt's girlfriend convicted of fraud: report

Published: 28 Mar 11 17:44 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/32868/20110328/

The girlfriend of newly crowned Social Democratic party leader Håkan Juholt was convicted of fraud and fired from her former employer, according to media reports.

Åsa Lindgren, who first met Juholt in 2005, was given a suspended sentence and fined by the Stockholm District Court in 2007 for having defrauded her employer of nearly 46,000 kronor ($7,200) between 2005 and 2006, Swedish business daily Dagens Industri (DI) reported on Monday.

At the time, Lindgren worked for Tui Fly Nordic, an airline operated by Swedish charter company Fritidsresor, where she was responsible for ensuring that customers were compensated for lost luggage and other problems.

On eleven separate occasions, she filed faulty information, including fake letters on behalf of fictional passengers, which resulted in the company paying out improper reimbursements.

Nine of the improper filings were completed using an automated form which resulted in 23,800 kronor being paid directly into Lindgren's personal bank account, according to DI.

On the two remaining occasions, she filed false claims normally used to reimburse passengers for lost baggage, netting her a total of 22,108 kronor.

Lindgren, who was fired in 2006, admitted to the scam. As she had no previous criminal record, the court fined her 9,000 kronor and gave her a suspended sentence for fraud.

When questioned by DI about the revelations, Lindgren directed all questions to Juholt who, through his press secretary, said that his girlfriend informed him of her crimes as soon as she was caught.

Speaking later on Monday with the Expressen newspaper, Lindgren did little to hide her conviction.

"I'm convicted for this. I've paid for my crime," she said.

Speaking with Aftonbladet, Juholt explained that the incident occured early in his relationship with Lindgren.

"I told her she needed to take responsibility and accept her punishment as an adult," he said.

"She committed a crime, has confessed to it, paid for it, and I've forgiven it."

oh, so his gf is a social democrates leader or is it juholt?thelocal, is exaggerating alot

"I'm convicted for this. I've paid for my crime,"

Fair enough.

I would think less of Juholt if he hadn't stuck by his thieving girlfriend. Maybe there's more to this man than wierd facial hair.

Ha.

A fraudulent process brings the 'new' leader to the helm, only to find out that it seems to be a common problem in the 'party'.

How is it that Sweden seems to top the Transparency International ratings for open governments and lack of bribery. Do they just look at whether money changes hands, or do they bother to look deeper in the corrupt ways of handing on jobs, giving of favours, using bureaucracy to hide what actually happens, fiddling returns etc.

Why is it that so many social dems are ethically challenged? If I'm not mistaken, Mona had her bouts with difficulty in telling "yours" from "mine". But I guess that's simply an extension of the general philosophy of these people, i.e. have the tax payers pay for their things, and tax-the-rich. All yours is mine, and all mine is yours. Sounds like a Karl Marx edict. Lets bid a permanent adieu to the party of Palme and its sickening dogma.

I dont know what is the big deal about this woman.

It was not Joholt that committed the crime

It happened in 2007

she has paid for the crime and admitted to it.

The only bg deal is that has the crime continued or not.
20:27 March 28, 2011 by Stickeroo
Well the big deal is if he gets into any position of power, what kind of influence she may have on him to abuse this power. I for one would think it would be unwise to have someone that committed such a petty act among the inner circle of an elected official. What if she decides she's going start selling "access" to him if he ever made it somewhere where people would like some access. I'm all about forgiving and forgetting but it also speaks a lot about the person who uses their position for their (illegal) personal (monetary) gain.
20:39 March 28, 2011 by StockholmSam
If people are not forgiven for their trespasses when they pay the price stipulated by the laws, then what is the meaning of the laws? Punishments are determined by establishing a fair value of compensation for the crime. This woman paid the fair compensation established for her crime. Water under the bridge.

Besides, I am less concerned with those that have been caught than I am with those who have not yet been caught.

Why Thelocal concetrates on The social democrates and not on the alliances policies like fas3 and praktik and lots of people are being kicked from Sjukskriven of FK ! and so what if his Gf is a fraud , while many politicians didnt pay their TV fee thats not Frauding the Govt or abt getting bostader (apartments) in stockholm much faster than normal ppl who wait yrs in line. Write on both sides and that would be great, people would love to hear about the parties who got the power and what they are doing not about a party who didnt win the election and their personal lives ,if she wasnt his Gf we wouldnt even hear about her in the first place. Why not write about the law which the parliamnet wouldnt pass (alliance) the law states the any funds from donated to the party should be registered and show to the public , but they refused!!! Why? ask urself. All politicians should have to wear suits like nascar drivers, so that all can see who their corporate sponsors are!!!

I just love Guilt by Association, don't you?

Say, wasn't Reinfeldt good buddies with George W. Bush?
22:19 March 28, 2011 by virgoman
They both look alike and smile alike........'' 've done the crime and ve done the time....'' But I think there's nothing like an ''ex-convict'' a convict is a convict and shouldn't hold a public office. My opinion anyways....
22:36 March 28, 2011 by Syftfel
@Valdemaratterdag; As compared to that sordid mistake, that useless street corner leafleteer, we have in the White House now, being buddies with W. ought to be a great asset. At least he wasn't a thief. Crush marxism now!

Mona and now these two, is it a rule that all Social Democrats have to be so physically ugly?

Birds of a feather flock together!! The Swedish papers are full of this story. It seems that she has no idea why she stole the money or what she did with it. According to her, she had no problems w/ her economy at that time. One wonders. Mona at least used her "company" Visa to buy diapers or so was the story at that time. Having paid for a crime does not excuse you but I am an old person w/ old ideas...oh well anything goes as it said in a popular song.
11:38 March 29, 2011 by Great Scott
The current government is commiting fraud all the time, why is this not published.
13:41 March 29, 2011 by cogito
@Johnny 1939. As far as I saw, the big Stockholm papers were silent on this story until after DagensIndustri and theLocal had it.

@StockholmSam: The point of the laws (or mor specifically, of fines, damages) may be to ensure that those defrauded get back what was taken, to cover some of the expenses of the legal system, and most importantly to discourage people from committing crimes by making it risky both financially and socially. I don't think many people consider crime acceptable on the condition that the perpetrator is punished in accordance with the law. In this case, a person has shown herself to be untrustworthy and there is no reason to assume that the punishment would correct such a character flaw, though those who know her may well judge that it has, or at least that she would not be stupid enough to do something similar ever again.

To me (and many others, judging by what I read elsewhere), the crime itself is not a big deal. What's interesting and makes this newsworthy is that Juholt did not realize that he should have mentioned it. It's all a bit circular that it's mostly getting attention due to the fact that he apparently did not think it would get attention, but then again that's how the media work these days and he should have realized it. That said, I see nothing wrong with how he's (not) acted. And in any case, he's just the leader of one party among many, and not even one that's in government.

Great Britain has the Beckhams.

Now Sweden has it's own celebrity Couple, to set standard for good looks!

How exciting.
