Arrest sparked wave of Gothenburg car fires

Published: 7 Apr 11 10:07 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33066/20110407/

Police in Gothenburg revealed on Wednesday that the torching of several cars in the suburb of Backa over the past few nights was in touched off due to a police action.

More than twenty cars were set alight in recent nights, including a police car and a security guard's car and police now believe the fires are connected to an arrest made on Sunday night.

The arrest came after a patrol car followed two suspects fleeing on a motorcycle.

The motorcycle and the car collided in a roundabout and the two suspects were injured.

When police apprehended one of the two, he allegedly said, “This is not the last you hear of this”.

“We believe that was what started it. But when we are catching criminals red-handed and it is seen as police aggression, that makes me worried,” said Lars Klevensparr, head of the police in the greater Gothenburg area, to news agency TT.

On Wednesday police in the area upgraded the incident to a more severe level, which enables them to call on all the resources to combat the problem.

“The cost doesn’t matter. We’ll deal with the bill afterwards,” said Klevensparr to TT.

According to the police those responsible for the car first are 20-30 youths between the ages of 18 to 30. Despite wearing hoods to disguise their faces, most are already known to the police.

According to local newspaper Göteborgs Posten (GP), local residents are appealing to authorities to calm things down in the area, which they believe has become increasingly plagued by lawlessness over the last ten years.

“The police are too lenient. They should take a strong line against these youngsters. As it is, they are just laughing at the police,” one resident told GP.

In the last two to three years, things seem to have gone from bad to worse.

“To me it is completely incomprehensible that such a small group of 10-20 people are managing to terrorize a whole neighbourhood through their total lawlessness, “ another resident said.

Things were reportedly calm in Backa on Wednesday following a greater police presence in the area.

“We’ll be around here in Backa a lot more in the near future. We’re not just talking to the youngsters but everyone, young and old. We’re doing everything we can to keep the area calm,” said Björn Mattson of the local police to GP.

I saw these thugs around midnight the night all of this happened. The police need to put a foot in their ass. From what I know, it took them over an hour to appear in Backa after I called them (and was on hold for 15 minutes just to get through btw).

It's pretty clear this is organized crime and it needs to be treated as such. The group of 20 I saw, all wearing black hoodies, were men...not boys. This isn't just teenage angst. Interrogate the two who were caught and then roundup everybody connected to them for questioning...apply pressure until someone breaks and agrees to testify.

Since I could hear them talking loudly and yelling, I know they weren't speaking swedish or english. It pisses me off that people would move here and then behave this way...it should be grounds for having your visa or citizenship revoked IMO.

don't you wish sometimes that if sweden had an over policed state like america does! i do undertand your comment mojofati the police in sweden needs more power to fight crime.
13:28 April 7, 2011 by jimmy1988
They need more power to fight the crime, but they don´t have´it because the government doesn´t give.
14:05 April 7, 2011 by tegstar83
No from what I know of Sweden they dont need more power, then need to deport these immigrants that cause these crimes! There!!! Problem solved, no more crime.

i wonder how a police car following 2 suspects on a motorcycle could have collided at the roundabout. tell it like it is, ..these people are angry because the police rammed into the motorcycle. this could have been avoided if more police were deployed to arrest them and no one would be talking about reprisals.

police brutality is also a crime and the police should not be seen descending to that level along with criminals. i do not justify what these people did especially because it is almost an act of terrorism.

"..plagued by lawlessness over the last ten years" it says. What is it in the last ten years that has changed in Backa to cause such chaos and lawlessness? Regardless, it seems to me that the police need considerably greater resources to combat this lawlessness, sharp ammunition included. A society's first order of business should be protect its citizens from physical harm and destruction of property. Does the Gothenburg police department do this?
14:40 April 7, 2011 by buahaha
That was criminal act of police, they can't kill people driving motorcycle just because they didn't stop. Million kids in my city escape because they don't have driving license, should cops shoot them just because of that? or kick them with car? Sweden is police state, the same as Germany, and in Sweden they target immigrants, therefore immigrants burned Uppsala and now Gothenburg (France and Denmark in the past too). Those citizens, that call cops just because they see immigrants, are just fascist and that's visible from comment above (deportation blabla). Fascist produce fake fear about immigrants and we saw already using of words Terrorize, but fascist are not terrorized when domestic people do something criminal. Just to remember you that majority of prison population are domestic people and not immigrants. And to remember you that Al Capone didn't kill so many people as fascists did. So, fascists are bigger damage for society than any domestic or foreign criminal. Therefore, fascists should loose citizenship and deport them to unrecognized state, Palestine or Somalia for example. It would be good for Sweden and for immigrants in Sweden.

@buahaha

It's hard to know where to start with such a long tirade of illogic and falsehood, but I'll ask you one thing. You state "That was criminal act of police, they can't kill people driving motorcycle just because they didn't stop."

The article states: "The motorcycle and the car collided in a roundabout and the two suspects were injured."

So how can I believe anything you write when your first sentence is a lie?

@buahaha

Some advice.

Wait till the effect of whatever you are popping, snorting, sniffing has worn off before you post on here.

If you did, then maybe it would make some sense. But there again...

I just love mob justice, don't you?
17:40 April 7, 2011 by technoviking
@ immigrants

You should listen to Rick, but I'd prefer you keep writing your true opinions on here...

Tell us all about it... How this riot is all the fault of the police, not the rioters.

Just like the Afghan murders of UN workers were the fault of the US, not the cold blooded killers.

How you'll never even look cross-eyed at the most sociopathic criminal amongst you, but will aggressively blame the generous society that's taken you in as charity cases.

Keep writing this so everyone can see what wonderful future citizens they've imported into their country and can think about it until the next election.

@buahaha, the fact is if Swedes were the ones committing these crimes I am sure the people who just want to feel secure in their home would be complaining as well. They have every right to. The fact is they dont have the opportunity to complain of these incidents "when" domestic people do them, because it doesnt happen. When is the last time ethnic Swedes, French, Germans, Brits, etc. demolished their cities? Or Canadian, American, or Australian immigrants for that matter? It seems there is a common denominator in all these riots. With the exception of Greece as of late, it seems whenever a European city gets smashed to pieces the same people are doing it.

@technoviking, very well stated.

What I don't get is this quote from the chief of police:

"I'm not even sure that, from a social-economic perspective, the best solution is to increase police resources. Maybe I should have received half, and the other half should've gone to the school"

http://t.co/DwsFlgP

Anyone know what on earth this guy is talking about? This is the chief of police? Good lord, no wonder criminals feel like they can run around and do whatever they like. Dear Polis: This isn't about socio-economics. It's about a gang of thieves and idiots who feel invincible. Allow the legislators in Stockholm to rectify the "socio-economics" of the situation. For now, please do your job and lock these criminals up before even more of our cars get torched.
20:24 April 7, 2011 by Valdemaratterdag
Jesus Christ, the picture for this article reminds one of Beirut in the 1970s. Why do people want to come to Sweden and make their new homeland as shitty as their old one?
22:56 April 7, 2011 by Uncle
Spot on technovikiing.

Same old story.

I would say - EXTRADITE all the "known to the police" immigrant criminals. There should be no "already known to police" immigrants. The "first time met the judge" ones shall get economy tickets back to the hellohole they came from. If these are kids, send their families with them. Let them burn and riot in Mogadishu and Damascus.

As an Australian looking at Sweden from the outside I see racism.

I see a bizarre self loathing racist agenda to elliminate out 10 million Scandinavians from the earth.

If someone in Thailand wanted to promote immigration from as many non Thai people as possible to interbreed... what would you think? Racism at work. Well that is what Sweden is doing.

The Swedish aboriginals should still exist in 200 years. But maybe they will not.

May the "Malmoization" of Sweden continue. It's well deserved.
14:53 April 27, 2011 by wenddiver
You mean it's not safe to comit crimes and run from the Police on a motorcycle??? Duh!!! Send the original criminals, their rioting friends and anybody who supports their criminality by word or deed to their home country. Immediatly, repeat as necessary.
