Death threats over Swede's Jacko sculpture

Published: 7 Apr 11 12:01 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33068/20110407/

Swedish artist Maria von Köhler has received death threats after the recent installation of a sculpture depicting Michael Jackson almost dropping his infant son out of the window at an East London recording studio.

"I am pretty surprised at the overwhelming amount of negative reactions from the Michael Jackson fan base," von Koehler said in a statement.

"I am referring specifically to the presumption by many that the piece was created as a negative, judgmental or ‘jokey’ commentary on Michael Jackson and his personal or professional life. This is not the case at all."

The sculpture, called ‘Madonna and child’ was installed at The Premises recording studio, used by famous artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone, in March.

Shortly after, the studio started receiving droves of angry calls and emails and even death threats from Jackson fans worldwide.

The sculpture, suspended high up on the side of the building, is a life-size depiction of the pop icon dangling his baby son out of the window, depicting an incident which took place in Berlin in 2002, causing quite a stir at the time.

While showing his infant son to the press, Jackson momentarily lost his grip of the child and it was feared the baby would fall.

Fans now claim that the statue is an attack on the singer.

“What drove this so called artist to recreate this crap? My goodness, this thing MJ did was for 3 flippin seconds and you people create this? You should be ashamed of yourselves cashing in on one of the most beloved human being this planet has ever had,” one fan wrote on the recording studio’s blog.

“This is a shame! And without respect for the greatest performer of all time! Michael was a very loving person, and all he wanted to was show his child to the world cause’ he was so thrilled over it! This Maria has NO respect for MJ”, another fan commented

But recording studio CEO Viv Broughton does not agree.

“How can a work of art that is faithful to a real event be construed as an attack on anyone? The sculpture depicts a moment of high drama as he offers his son for the adulation of his followers. It’s certainly not meant to ridicule but neither is it a homage,” Broughton wrote in a statement.

This is the second Michael Jackson statue to cause an uproar in the UK in recent weeks.

Fulham Football Club chairman and previous owner of Harrods, Mohammed al Fayed, recently upset football fans by telling them they could ‘go to hell’ if they didn’t like the recently erected Jacko statue outside the clubs home ground.

Madonna and Child will be displayed at the East London studio until May 1.

I support the artist Maria von Köhler . Jackson holding the baby off the balcony is my most vivid memory of him along with setting his hair on fire,(cool!). Not his crappy music.
13:46 April 7, 2011 by Speak the truth
Firstly, Michael did NOT momentarily lose his grip on 'Blanket' at all, try watching footage of that before you make false comments. He had hold of him tightly. Fact.

Secondly, Mohammed Al Fayed was speaking to the FOOTBALL fans when he told them to go to hell if they didn't like the statue being outside Fulham football ground. You think he was giving a private viewing today to the MJ fans if he though they should go to hell? NO! Thank you! Get your facts straight reporter, you're no better than the trash tabloids for lying.

The statue is hideous btw. Oh and Michael made a mistake lifting the baby over the balcony for which he apologised for deeply. It was a moment of excitement and he wanted to show the fans his precious son! You tell me any parent has never made a mistake! You can't because we all do!

Get over it already! And while you're at it, someone give that HYBRED prick who made comment number 1 a slap. If this so called statue makes it safely into a packing box from the UK, you can bet your own ass that it wont make it out in LA. That is all.
13:52 April 7, 2011 by Syftfel
I can't imagine why anyone would want to issue a fatwa over this? After, all it's a tryue depiction of what actually happened in Berlin. But perhaps someone can explain. Thank you.
13:59 April 7, 2011 by bolababu
finally, ..someone who "speaks-the-truth" on thelocal. i can see all you hypocritical whiners cowering with your tails between your legs.

@HYBRED; dude, you seriously need to get a life.

@Speak the truth

Where in the article does it say that Fayed was speaking to Michael Jackson fans?
15:04 April 7, 2011 by Raiha
My only issue with this event is calling Maria von Kohler an artist. She didn't create this artist, this historical fact, this composition... she cashed in on it.

Tacky, unoriginal, and uninteresting. The majority of her stuff is polyurethane trash.
15:13 April 7, 2011 by HYBRED
@bolababu

You need to face reality and see the truth.
16:36 April 7, 2011 by Mrs Hina
hahaha..I hope now they can feel how do Muslims feel for their Prophet when the dead soul good for nothing just singing is used in the games..now where did the freedom of action GO? tit for tat!

Its all the matter of respect and nothing related to freedom of speech or action.unfortunately now the coming generation has no respect for their own selves ..
16:40 April 7, 2011 by Nora
You can guess what I though is going to follow the sentence: "Death threats over ..." and I said "Oh, no, one more".

And suddenly I realize that this time the death treat comes from Michael Jackson's fans! What a relief! I don't think they are serious.
17:06 April 7, 2011 by jack sprat
Tell it like it is.

Fayed should stick a copy of this one outside Fulham football ground.

I bet the fans would love it.

I'm sure they would enjoy pelting it with rotten eggs and beer bottles every time they lose instead of taking it out on the opposition.

" Michael was a very loving person, "

As many a young boy can testify
17:25 April 7, 2011 by eZee.se
@Mrs Hina,

It's again morons making death threats.

It's this "artist's" freedom to create something like this.

I doubt anyone is going to try to chop her head off nor is there a price on her head.

I do hope these idiots who made these threats are caught and dealt with exactly the same as anyone else making a death threat against art that "hurts their feelings".
17:28 April 7, 2011 by technoviking
The fact that there are wackadoo weirdos are out there making death threats and people writing angry rants on here to defend the honor of this pedophile creep is disturbing...

Yes, Thriller was awesome. So what? That doesn't make him a saint or excuse his "hobbies".
17:29 April 7, 2011 by Swedesmith
von Köhler was going to do a statue of Jacko having relations with his monkey, but then decided that would be tasteless.
17:34 April 7, 2011 by William Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha
Death threats over an artistic(?) representation of Jacko? Is he the new messiah? Blimey.
17:36 April 7, 2011 by jack sprat
I imagine the monkey would have serious objections and in all probability launch a lawsuit for deformation of character.
22:49 April 7, 2011 by bramblebush
Is it a wonder that all these arabs are always coming to the defense of Wacko Jacko? Afterall, they do share the same propensity for young boys.......
08:59 April 8, 2011 by Makaveli
@Mrs. Hina: You refer to MJ as "dead soul good for nothing". I presume you'd expect others to show some respect to the "Great Prophet" but you do not have the decency to show even the slightest respect for a dead man. Do you even have any regard for the life he lived, or was he just another "infidel" in your eyes???

@Jack Sprat: You must have been one very bitter man to see "the monkey" rise to such heights - world's most famous entertainer that will ever live. Oh by the way, its about time u go get your white bed sheet, mask, and do that cross burning thing! Obs! don't see that very frequently nowadays. lol!
09:27 April 8, 2011 by Rick Methven
@Makaveli

"world's most famous entertainer that will ever live"

What a pea brained idiot you are!!

The only famous thing about sicko jacko is that he was a serial paedophile who got away with it.

He is only great in the sick minds of fans like you. who make death threats because your idol is being exposed for the disgusting person he really was.

To me, this piece of "art" reveals more about the artist than it does about Michael Jackson.

I find it really sad that out of a lifetime of positive charitable and giving moments in this humanitarians lifetime, the artist chose to recreate this ill-judged moment in the singers life.

I think this really just shows that modern art is meaningless and goes unrecognised if it isn't "controversial". I think it's cheap personally. No different from comedians going on and on about the singers plastic surgery for cheap laughs. No respect for fellow human beings.

Did we not already get sick of the news footage of him and the baby being played in slow-replay mode over an over on the news broadcasts in order to create sensationalism? It bored me then, lot of fuss about nothing, clearly he didn't drop the baby, I've seen many other parents do similar things in everyday life without anyone batting an eyelid.

People seem to forget that Jackson was just a human being life everyone else, but one who did a lot for this world, and surely since his passing he deserves a little recognition for all his global charitable efforts, he is in the Guiness book of world records as the pop star who donated the most money to charity in his lifetime, yet we remember him for this 2 second moment..... sad :-(

Thank-you Clegg777
14:31 April 8, 2011 by tadchem
The only reason for this 'controversy' is that the Truth hurts.

Jackson acted irresponsibly with his infant child.

Don't suppress the fact; deal with it and learn from it.

Only a fool defends an idol with feet of clay.
14:40 April 8, 2011 by bcterry
It never ceases to amaze how millions upon millions support these pedophiles, even to the extent of placing them in reverence and issuing fatwas against those who expose it.

Popes and prophets included.

"People seem to forget that Jackson was just a human being life everyone else, but one who did a lot for this world"

What????!!!

Jackson was a serial pedophile who bribed his way out of jail. He basically bought the sexual services of children from their parents.

He should have had another kind of needle in his arm long before the one that killed him.

One of the functions artists seem to have taken on these days is to push at the boundaries of public taste and Ms van Kohler certainly has done that - I'm not sure what kind of 'reputation' she already had, but she's sure achieved one now

I would think this is more of an honest realistic sculpture of Jackson's bad taste behavior, based on a simple verifiable fact.

He made his own bed.

Here we go again..another numbskull prick jumping to stupid conclusions. Who ever said i was a fan of the man! i guess somehow your immature brains could not quite grasp the meaning of my post. As for making death threats..well, lets just say i have better things to be doing than making death threats because my supposed idol was 'insulted'. Its a fact that this man Jacko (like it or not) is the world's biggest entertainer/artist of this time. You can let that sink in or i can come over and shove it up ur stinky A-hole! next time you think about making some bold presumptions, you better think twice..biaaaatch...moving on!

This is no longer about Michael Jackson. This is an epic battle between the forces of good and evil and I pray to God someone will step forward to halt to this senseless inhumanity. It was horrifying enough to watch a fellow human being torn to pieces by a mob made more gleeful with every anguished cry the victim uttered. But sickening as that was it is even more horrifying to witness him endlessly ripped from his grave by rabid blood-maddened jackals. It's heartbreaking to watch—where are all the decent people? Every person who's helped crucify this soul or idly stood by and done nothing should be shamed before God. -Ara Krejci
