Housing minister stymied in Stockholm flat hunt

Sweden's Minister for Public Administration and Housing Stefan Attefall has been left empty handed as he struggles to find an available apartment in Stockholm to meet his budget and needs, according to a report in the Metro newspaper.

"I have among other things looked at a one bedroom apartment in Vasastan," Attefall said of his hitherto unsuccessful attempt to find a home in the city notorious for an ill-functioning rental market and high property prices.

In the meantime the Christian Democrat has been forced to remain in an apartment intended for members of Sweden's Riksdag, a position he relinquished on becoming a minister in October 2010.

The taxpayer-funded apartments are intended for the exclusive use of current members, and his replacement in the Riksdag, Andrea Carlsson, has become a victim of Attefall's forlorn search for a suitable abode, Metro reports.

Carlsson ultimately tired of waiting, opting instead to invest in a one bedroom apartment in the Kristineberg area of the city.

Stefan Attefall is however not alone in overstaying his welcome in a Riksdag apartment, the newspaper reports, with Christian Democrat party leader and social minister Göran Hägglund also currently remaining in his studio near Munkbron in the city centre.

While Göran Hägglund has been a minister since 2006, his press secretary declined to comment on why he has not relinquished his Riksdag apartment.

The stock of apartments are intended to ensure that Riksdag members have somewhere to stay when on business in the city and are allocated according to the division of mandates.

René Poedtke at the Riksdag property unit told Metro that the apartments are however handed over to parties to allocate.

"How these are allocated is in the first instance an internal party issue," he said.

"surely this is only happening to me, and not the millions of others that are consistantly screwed by my ministry's failures. No action needed" - Stefan Attefall's brain.

Same mafia all over the planet. Politicians tied to influential housing market profiteers.

Prices must go up up up.

Flats near airports used to be such terrible places for the noise-pollution. These days overprized because of airport...

When the people is mostly ape-stupid, is it any wonder every screw-up goes like tar into dry wood?

Let's see how long it takes for him to solve this problem.

Hmm...I don't seem to have any sympathy for him. Maybe he should check the second hand market on blocket, so he can get screwed around like the rest of us. Or, here's an idea, deregulate the housing market so investors will be incentivized to build rentals and not simply converting existing apartments to condos...or whatever they call them here.

Finding an illegal let in Stockholm is simpler, but highly profitable for the 'black' subcontractor.

Why is nothing done to end this corrupt practice and free up the rental market ?

All that is required is to regularly check on who actually lives in each flat - knock on the door and ask. Or check on who has more than one address in Stockholm.

But the current system is great for the owner of the building, they get their rent, the primary contract holder makes a profit but the poor black renter gets completely screwed.

He better not have looked at the same 1 bedroom as I have in Vasastan.

No sympathy from me. Maybe this should spurn you to do something to fix the problem, Mr. Attefall.

Stockholm is no different from any other capital in Europe and the US. But I agree there should be more rentals that remain rentals and not converted. Of course, rents would still be high and unaffordable for ordinary people. Being a stockholmer for generations I could not abide living in the burbs....hate commuting

@johnny1939

Maybe you're speaking to it being a tight rental market, but there is definitely a big difference between stockholm and the US if you've ever rented an apartment in the US. Namely, there's no national queue that you have to register for. Maybe you have to pay a bit more, or maybe not, but at least you can find some place to live reasonably fast. Here, it's impossible. And then, you get screwed worse because you have to bribe people to simply sublet their apartment to you. What a scam.

Yeah, it's got to be really hard to find a place to live on a minister's salary. Lucky for him he had our taxfunded apartment intended for others. Good for him. F*cking bastard.
