I completely understand someone getting upset. My problem is the fact that they are going to be prosecuted. If someone is an idiot long enough they tend to be marginalized anyway, no prosecution necessary.

Actually racism is nothing new in Sweden (and everywhere in the world). However most Swedes do not like admitting it. They would tell you that no no .. no racism here. For those who know Swedish .. there is something known as "smygracism" which is not so harmful (no violence) but it is bad enough that some people do have this attitude (and this leads to discriminations). The BIG question to answer, I think, is whether the situation with regard to racism in Sweden is getting better or getting worse. Personally I think the majority of Swedes are less racist and are better at living side by side with people of other races, culture, .... More Swedes than ever have seen the world outside Sweden and probably understand it better. These days you will meet lots of young Swedes hanging (making) out with people of other races happily. Thousands of Swedish men are happily married to women from Asia, Africa and Latin America, etc. So it seems that we are getting better at integration but maybe I am wrong? The worst incident in Sweden I experienced with racism was about 12 years ago on the train: a young couple got on the train and they were to sit opposite to an African family (father, mother and kid) ... to my utmost disgust they said explicitly something quite horrible about African people and then they walked away and (probably) sat somewhere else. I was sitting adjacent to the family, and my jaw dropped to the floor ... if I were police I would probably press charges against such the racist speech but I did not want to give a daxx as it seems that the African couple did not understand what the racist couple was saying but I think they felt the unfriendliness towards them. After that I never experienced anything like that again but I know some south Asian students who told me that they were spit on by racist guys (probably neo narcists) at night. However this recent incident in Lund suggested that it may be getting worse as that was among the elites i.e. Lund Unviversity's students. So it is no surprise that the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) took up this matter seriously.

I agree. There are several aspects of the EU's response which are disturbing.

For one to attribute the student's actions to "hate" is assuming alot. They were being insensitive prats, but there's no indication that they were motivated by hate, anymore than Prince Harry was expressing or being motivated by hatred of Jewish people when he foolishly donned a nazi uniform for a student fancy dress party.

The ENAR also refer to the students actions as 'criminal'. Really? The last time I heard anyone refer to the antics of students at a party as criminal he was representing the German Democratic Republic, informally called East Germany.

Thirdly, having unilaterally acted as judge and jury on this issue (while not being within a 1,000 miles of the incident) and decreeing it a product of race hatred, the ENAR then demand that the Swedish government arrest the students involved.

ENAR also makes hay out of the fact that the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2011 as the Year For People of African Descent. Well jee whiz. No one at the UN general assembly is elected, and as far as I'm concerned they speak for no one but themselves. For them it may be the "Year for People of African Descent" but for me it is not. I also strongly resent the ENAR issuing dicatorial decrees to soverign democratic states like this. They should butt out. The other members, the tyrants, the thugs and the crooks that most of them represent have a lot to learn from Sweden, but from the UN, or the EU for that matter, Sweden has nothing to learn.

I am glad to see that ENAR is getting involved.

There is far to much indirect racism and institutional tolerance of racism in Sweden. Highlighting that fact and bringing it into the public domain is the first step in dealing with the problem.

One thing to remember in Sweden is that it was only in 1976 that the racial hygiene laws were removed from the statute books. 63000 people, mostly ethnic Sami women were sterilised under those laws.

And as a reminder, the world's first "racial biology", the pseudo-science taken seriously as legitimate science, was founded by Herman Lundborg from Uppsala University before WWII. One day some German visitors came and got interested in his teachings... Next you know, Hitler and the Holocaust.

Everybody seem to be talking about a kind of racism that is virtually unavoidable. Since everyone is a racist, and the victims of this racism are anyone visiting a foreign country. maybe we don´t need to worry so much. I am perfectly fine with being looked at as strange or different when I am travelling. Get over it and try not to be so worried about what others think.
