Lund slave auction response: 'stop being defensive and listen'

Published: 29 Apr 11 17:26 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33490/20110429/

In the aftermath of the recent 'slave auction' stunt carried out by several students at Lund University, there has been too much protesting, and not enough listening, argues US graduate student Cate Bridenstine, who witnessed the event.

I have debated whether or not to add anything further to the discussions currently taking place at Lund University about race and bigotry and the role of the nations in all of this – especially since it has become clear that along with abundant support and kind words, those who choose to speak and be named will face a host of disturbing consequences.

I do not wish to hash out the potential humor in blackface or reiterate my disgust with the tacit acceptance many students demonstrated at the sittning (official banquet) in question. I would, however, like to weigh in on how the conversation is being conducted.

Since filing a complaint with the police last week, Jallow Momodou has endured an incredible degree of harassment ranging from having his personal information plastered over the internet to photoshopped images of him naked in shackles being distributed throughout Lund.

He has become a lightning rod for the defensive and angry in Sweden who have felt personally implicated by the mention of racism at the university.

Let us be clear: what has been inflicted upon Jallow Momodou constitutes hate speech. It is also an obvious attempt to silence those who may wish to speak up in the future.

These acts warn us against change. Stop speaking, they say. You are overreacting, they insist; it was simply a joke. Slavery happened a long time ago, we are told. Get over it.

But instead of coercing silence, we must listen.

Listen to the students who feel marginalized and silenced when their countries, histories and bodies are mocked and derided.

Slicked on face paint, bafoonish red lips and the mock selling of human flesh is a violent assertion that there are spaces on campus where only select students are welcome. The virulence of the community’s reaction only confirms our need for this discussion.

Please listen. Instead of insisting that your reality must also be another’s, accept the possibility that what you have been taught might have come at the cost of another history.

Listen to the students who no longer feel safe because they are being threatened virtually and on the street.

For those of us who have grown accustomed to institutionalized racism and the white privilege it ensures: we have almost always been told that our experiences are the norm, that how we feel about the world is valid and important, so listening might prove difficult.

But it is time for those who usually speak to quiet for a moment and listen. Please stop insisting that your beliefs are universal, that those who feel differently should stop speaking their truths.

Our school is filled with unique individuals and that multiplicity deserves a conversation governed by civility and respect.

However, not all perspectives receive equal consideration in social, legal and cultural spheres. Some are constantly and with great institutional backing, privileged over others.

I’m writing this because I would like to say again: please quiet your defensiveness and listen.

Listen so that perhaps instead of hate and violence, the useless destruction they cause may succumb to mutual understanding and the soul-expanding possibilities of looking at the world through someone else’s eyes.

Cate Bridenstine is an American graduate student at Lund University. She saw the Lund students portraying "slaves" complete with blackened faces and ropes around their necks the Helsingkrona nation after they left the banquet at Hallands nation. Her article was first published in Lund Uninversity's Lundagård newspaper on April 25th, 2011.

To think that in the 21st century, students at university level would be so insensitive about those of us the decedents of slaves, tells us about where these students get their racist ideas from.

Imagine that these said students then go on to the Swedish work and political forces, making crucial policy decisions? Now you know, why there is no person of colour on any of the Swedish corporations. Why there is a rise in xenophobic behaviour in Malmo, and the random shooting of immigrants. Until the leaders of government, the Monarchy and corporate Sweden, start to speak out forcefully about the racism that keep raising its ugly head, Sweden will slowly join the pantheon of European countries that continue to cajole such institutional racism.

I for one does not believe that Sweden is in itself a racist country, for i have seen its great works internationally. However, if its leaders do not step up to the plate and address the current strain of racism and acts against immigrants, Sweden will soon face social unrest the likes of what has happened in France.

"Sweden will soon face social unrest the likes of what has happened in France. "

- careful there fisherman, that sounds a bit like a threat. How do think the immigrants would fare against such social unrest?

You want to know what this is really about ? It is about Swedes aserting their Swedishness. The Caucasions of Sweden, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand are "screaming" through their actions that we ( Caucasions) are not going to hang our collective heads in shame for things that happened centuries ago. We owe NO-ONE an apology nor anything else. As for Sweden, the land area of Sweden has been inhabited by VERY CAUCASION caucasions since the beginning of time, we go back thousands of years,THIS IS OUR COUNTRY ! Multi-culturism, diversity, and all the other social/racial engineering experiments designed to dilute Caucasia/Europe in order to facilitate a " New Age Global Village" IS NOT GOING TO WORK. Hate Speech is telling us we can not BE PROUD TO BE SWEDISH....100% PURE SWEDISH . Tell me what is wrong with that when it is OK for everyone else to exhibit their ethnic/racial pride ???????

@jimmyjames

"Hate Speech is telling us we can not BE PROUD TO BE SWEDISH...100% PURE SWEDISH "

or in your case a NON Swedish American bigot.

Nobody is denying anybody white, black, brown pink or yellow the right to have pride in their roots. There are many third, fourth generation Swedes of colour who are just as proud to be Swedish as any Caucasian Swede. What is unacceptable is infantile white supremacist racists such as you trying to create a barrier between people.

On Saturday 16 April 2011, two student associations (Hallands and Helsingkrona), known as "Nations" in Lund University were involved in a controversial party showcasing a "slave auction". During the party organized by Hallands Nation, 3 people with blackened faces were reportedly tied up with ropes and led into the hall by a "slave owner." The "slaves" were "sold" off during the party. Mr. Jallow Momodou visits The Context of White Supremacy. Mr. Momodou is a member of the National Afro-Swedish Association and a faculty member of Lund University. We'll discuss Mr. Momodou'explicit episodes of White Supremacy. He reported the above Racist incidents, and was subsequently subjected to additional Racist abuse. Following news of his complaint, Momodou arrived at his office at Malmö University on Wednesday morning to find posters on the library bulletin board featuring his face superimposed on the image of a naked man in chains. â??Our negro slave has run away,â?? read the text on the posters. We look forward to hearing more about White Supremacy in the area of the world known as Sweden.

I congratulate you on your thoughtful piece. But I'm afraid putting it on The Local, where anything goes diminishes it a little.

A well written article.

@jimmyjames

since when did it become okay to exhibit your "Swedish pride" by clamping down on other races? if you think it's okay, then you fit into the definition of white supremacist.
12:01 May 2, 2011 by sliver
Oh dear, who let the dogs out??
04:30 May 3, 2011 by MichiganLady
LeoKinman--agreed. I'm baffled as to the connection between being proud of your origins (perfectly fine) and de-humanizing others. These things don't have to be mutually exclusive! Surely people can "assert their Swedishness" without doing it at the expense of others' rights and humanity?

I've been saying what the article's writer is saying all along: I'm appalled at all who have responded to this story by trying to silence the wronged, telling them how they ought to feel--then wondering what's racist about that.

I was born in Sweden and studied at Lund University some 10 years ago. It was a great place and I also had lots of fun.

Now I live in the UK so perhaps my horizons have widened compared to the average Swede (at least some of those who wrote comments here..), but I don't think I would react differently if I had stayed in Sweden. My background and childhood was based on tolerance and accepting and understanding that there is always more than one view to things. Listening is key to understanding.

I am ashamed and saddened to read what has happened. Anyone can make a mistake, but to have it pointed out to and then react in such a way displays a lack of understanding that should not be allowed to pervade without a strong reaction. Especially at a university which is supposed to foster and guide kids into adults, to see things from different angles and open their eyes, this can only be diagnosed as a failure.

Cate is making an important point. The world is big and you are a tiny part of it. Open your eyes or stay immature little kids forever.

Well you know what's funny about this whole situation, the vikings were not racist, as a matter of fact all those what, hundreds of years ago, they traded with Moors who made it that far north to see what was up there, no big deal, funny that ancient warriors could get along better than uni students, and for decades my dad, a black American, constantly praised the Swedes for their openness and welcoming nature when he was there in the 70's, but then that was quite awhile ago, I wonder what's happened in the meantime.
10:31 May 5, 2011 by nolikegohome
i kind of feel scared because I am black. Maybe i should try to find a way to bleach my skin but (not my brain and heart) to be safe?
11:45 May 5, 2011 by Rick Methven
@Swedeabroad & Angry Ami

The responses from the apologists for these students on this forum do NOT represent the typical Swedish attitude, the post and comments here are in the main from a few twisted souls who are NOT Swedish and generally are not even in Sweden.

It is just unfortunate that The Local seems to attract the lowest common denominator when it comes posters.
12:23 May 5, 2011 by Angry Ami
@Rick Methven

Don't sweat it, most Americans aren't represented by many of the comments you read on any forum, if I had a euro for every stupid comment I read from one of my countryman I'd be a rich man.

It's CAUCASIAN you inbred.
08:25 May 6, 2011 by Tdye
@tjolahopp

You seem like the raciest one, so far you have attacked 3 people ( 2 on another page) for no good reason, and to call him an inbred because he misspelled a word is pretty much childish, i will be looking around and every time you spell something wrong.. ill make sure to point it out

and it's WHITE or is that raciest to say cause we all live in your politically correct world
11:08 May 6, 2011 by Frobobbles
"Let us be clear: what has been inflicted upon Jallow Momodou constitutes hate speech"

No. Ever seen the satirical comedy Bamboozled by Spike Lee?

The real racists are those that say that to say some things and make some jokes, you have to have a specific ethnicity or skin color.
15:27 May 6, 2011 by fishermen
The more i read some of these comments, the more i cringe at what Sweden has come to. I can clearly see that racism is alive a well n much of the Swedish homes. To imagine that some of you would try to seriously justify this racism act, as Swedish people asserting their Nordic culture is mind blowing. But i say to those of you who are proponents of school of racism, that to stop hiding behind your cloaks, gowns, and hoods as you Klan persons and Nazis does so well, and come debate the issue of racism in the open.

You will not, i can bet on that, because racist are all a bunch of cowards. You will make all these hateful speeches, and are so insecure in your skins that you have to hide behind cover. I challenge all you racist and supporters of this despicable act, to come and let us debate the issue at any forum. I can bet again, that you cowards will never accept it and show up.

It is incumbent on the Swedish Monarchy, Government and its Corporate leaders to speak up, because your silence has been deafening. Your silence on racism is becoming to tell the world that you too are sanctioning this racist element that currently exist in Sweden.

We know that no man is an island, that economics matters and that Sweden does a great deal of international trade.
07:54 May 7, 2011 by gherhardt
I've heard an American saying "when you throw a rock at dogs, the one who barks the loudest is the one that got hit."

Well, you can really tell which ones are the inbred, insecure, puny-brained racists, because they really howl when the truth hits them.
01:21 May 9, 2011 by redfish
@gherehardt:

Despite popular theory, I don't believe people act most violently when faced with the truth, they do when faced with insult, and whether that is perceived or real is another matter.

Just remember that some people who are crying 'racist' are barking pretty loud themselves.

I think some Swedes, like some Americans, may be just be tired with political correctness, that they're taking it out in very loud and obnoxious ways. During the 80s and 90s in the US, the main people who were fighting political correctness were talk radio hosts (ie Limbaugh) who were purposely obnoxious in order to get attention, because the more attention they got the more listeners they got. But the point was not obnoxiousness in itself, they saw it as a way to make a stand.
05:04 May 16, 2011 by Rosenkranz
Why are these comments blaming White Europeans for the Atlantic slave trade. Everyone should learn that slavery was dominated by Jewish merchants and slave traders.

Also, Jesse Jackson should go take care of his love-child that he had in an adulterous affair with another woman and mind his own business.
