Sweden terror threat stands despite bin Laden death

The death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on Sunday has not affected Sweden's security situation regarding terrorist threats, according to the Swedish Security Service.

"We continue to follow developments together with our international partners. We currently have the same assessment as yesterday. No changes in respect of the threat situation," said Michael Gunnarsson at Säpo.

Security experts worldwide are busy debating the impact of the death of Osama bin Laden on the global terror threat, with several warning of likely revenge attacks.

In a poll conducted by the Metro newspaper in cooperation with YouGov the day following the announcement of bin Laden's death, 49 percent of Swedes expected there to be additional terror attacks in Sweden.

In addition, 74 percent of Swedes polled said they expected al-Qaeda sympathisers to seek revenge for his death by carrying out additional terror attacks around the world.

As late as February 2011, an English-language online publication with links to the al-Qaeda terrorist network called indirectly for new acts of terrorism in Sweden, while paying tribute to the suicide bomber who attacked in Stockholm in December.

Taimour Abdulwahab, a 29-year-old whose family fled from Iraq to Sweden in 1991, blew up himself and his car in a deserted side-street off of Stockholm's busiest pedestrian thoroughfare on December 11th, injuring two people.

The attack was Sweden's first suicide bombing and came as the Security Service was completing a report which concluded that violent Islamic extremism posed a threat to Sweden that shouldn't be underestimated.

US president Barack Obama announced the news late Sunday night Washington time that Osama bin Ladin, almost ten years after he masterminded the 9/11 attacks on New York City, had been killed in a US led operation.

In an address to the nation, Obama said Bin Ladin was killed by US special forces in Abbottabad, a highland town north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Sunday.

Interesting, left wing groups and anarchists still pose the greatest terrorist threat in Europe. Last year they carried out far more attacks or attempts within the EU than Muslim groups, yet we hear very little of them. Instead, we get opinion polls measuring the opinions of a group of people who have very little idea of the situation.

Get point isenhand!

What amazes me is that some idiot in the US or Europe etc will go and kill several people in a shoot out and nothing really appears to happen. Whereas if a Mulsim terrorist shouting Allah did the same, the President and voters would be looking to get their revenge and bring in more security/intrusive measures.

Yet, you see nothing about restricting gun ownership in the US as the powerful lobbies have bribed the Government representatives via funding. Maybe if a Muslim organisation did the same, maybe we would see the same shrug of the shoulders reaction.

For me, the terrorist and the lunatic loner who shoots innocent students and teachers are the same. They are both murderers and should be accordingly dealt with with new appropriate measures to reduce the sem thing happening again. Take the emotion and hostility out of it and they might achieve more. By jumping on the Muslim terrorist bandwagon, you in fact add more esteem to those who want to to do the same.

You bet the threat remains. Bin Laden's followers have planted enough stray dogs in Sweden, thanks in no small part to the failing integration policies of the party of palme that the threat is severe! Rest assured that Bin Laden's henchmen have plans for Sweden.

I'm always amazed at the Islamist nutters whose logic seems to run that they are entitled to attack Sweden because Swedish boots are on the ground in Afghanistan (trying to bring peace, order, development, education, etc) while apparently blissfully unaware that their very presence here also represent foreign Islamist boots on the ground in Sweden.

What goes for one, goes for the other. So a real quid pro deal I'd support is if Swedish troops exit Aghanistan will all the foreign muslims living in Sweden promise to exit this country.

How about it? If your answer is 'yes', you have a deal, we could even throw in a free flight home.

Yeah, there are plenty of other followers of has-bin laden to take his place. nothing much has changed. Except there is now a slightly damaged mansion for rent in Pakistan now.

@planet.sweden

why not but first ask if your dady US will allow you to leave Afghanistan. Its not just sweden whole of Europe has become dump yard of immigrants. If US is a dick and Muslims are pussy then EU is nothing more than a condom between them.

This is only true when you count the number of incidents. If you count the number of deaths then muslims attacks are in majority. Even if you don't include 9/11.
