Woman dies after dung pool plunge

Published: 3 May 11 14:29 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33552/20110503/

A woman's body has been unearthed in a manure basin in the countryside near Essunga in western Sweden, with police yet to establish the cause of death.

"Neighbours have found her. We have since sealed off the location," police spokesperson Björ Blixt told the TT news agency.

Police were called in at around 9am on Tuesday.

According to a TT source a dead dog has also been found in the same basin where the woman was found, located on a farm near the small rural community of Essunga in Västergötland.

"She appears to have been trying to save her dog, which had fallen in to the well, and then fallen in herself," a neighbour told the broadcaster TV4.

Police were at first unable to rule out that a crime had been committed, but were able to confirm on Tuesday afternoon that her death was probably an accident.

"There is nothing which indicates a crime," said police inspector Pelle Jenvén to TT.

A probable scenario that police are working on is that the woman fell in while trying to save her dog and was unable to save herself.

"It is practically impossible to get back out of the well once you have got in there," said Jenvén.

The accident is presumed to have occurred on Tuesday morning. The deceased is reported to be a local resident.

This has GOT to be in the top 10 worst ways to die. Would be interested to see a picture of said "dung pool", maybe a grate over it would have stopped this from happening. Very $hitty situation...no pun intended.

Yeah, it's a sh&tty way to go. A massive overdose of fiber. It's a sad story.

Hmmm, not quite what I imagined. Thought maybe more of a bottomless pit of dung? That doesn't look very deep, but looks can be deceiving, maybe thats what got her.
16:40 May 3, 2011 by Swedesmith
An absolutely terrible way to die. My deepest sympathies.
18:31 May 3, 2011 by Lukestar1991
It seems some people are emotionally retarded to an extreme extent to make fun out of something like this.
18:34 May 3, 2011 by darky
But how can you risk your life in the first place because of a dog? This is crazy. I wonder what these people do with these dogs at home. God can be very angry with such a person. A country where pets are at the same category with human beings? Bulsh'''''t
18:52 May 3, 2011 by calebian22
Only a tool like you Darky would not understand the love between a dog and his master. No doubt the only love you have for dogs in your culture is the love of the taste.
19:14 May 3, 2011 by Swedesmith
I would try to rescue a dog. A cat, I'm not so sure.
21:20 May 3, 2011 by darky
@ Calebian22, I see you know so much about my culture, great but I'd rather die saving a human being than an animal which can be replaced with another. There is something wrong with this your society here. And for your information, I don't eat dogs. Of course if you decide not to have children but prefer to have a dog as a child, there is a great tendency to end up this way. Now she died a very stupid death, Just be careful not to be the next person to die this stupid way or the soil will reject your corpse because I have warned you before time.
22:07 May 3, 2011 by Swedesmith
I really don't think any of us has the right to judge whether she died stupidly or not...unless you were there and you witnessed her death. If so, I believe that the police would like a word with you.
22:11 May 3, 2011 by muscle
could it be a possibility, that she fell at night, and the dog wanted to save the master and died in process?
23:23 May 3, 2011 by jack sprat
Putting a grate over is not really practical as they cover such a large areas and regular access may be required.

As shown in the photo they are normally well fenced for safety, with fairly fine mesh so as to prevent access for even small animals as well as ppl.

Can only wonder if an access gate was left open or the fence was damaged.

Another problem with them is the plastic-like flexible sheet that is used as a lining.

As can be seen it slopes right up above ground level and therefore even anyone close to the edgeof the pool would probably not get any grip to get out as it is extremely slippery.

For that reason the chances are that it was a horrible slow lingering death as she tried in vain to get back out but repeatedly slipped back in.
01:14 May 4, 2011 by Da Goat
It is a bit silly to go into a place like this to rescue anything! put simply you are risking your life in various ways! she would have been better to throw her dog a rope or even lassoed it or gone to get the proper equipment or even tied herself with a rope to the fence 1st, one has no hope of getting out once in! I guess she was silly or pushed !
01:18 May 4, 2011 by Stickeroo
Wow jack, you are quite the expert on "dung pools" lol.

As for not having the right to judge whether she died stupidly...well actually...I do have that right, and the right to judge whatever the hell I want. And if you ask me, she kinda did. Not that I don't understand it, from the picture it looks like you could totally hop right in and grab your dog, only to find out that it's probably a lot deeper than it looks. But still, the whole dying in a pool of dung has some humor to it. Perhaps it's cuz I sold my soul a while back.
01:19 May 4, 2011 by jamesblish
Nobody dives in thinking that they're risking their life, it's a reflex. Anyone with half a brain understands this but there are a lot of cuckoos in this nest, it seems.
03:12 May 4, 2011 by Swedesmith
I wonder what Karin Wanngård would have to say about this?
05:36 May 4, 2011 by calebian22
Darky,

I stand corrected, you're an ubertool. The soil will reject me? That's asinine! As for knowing your culture, why would I? Ubertool culture doesn't interest me. Some cultures are indeed better than others.
07:52 May 4, 2011 by muscle
Some people never realize that pets, aren't just pets to certain people, its more like part of the family. Back in my country, I know a case, where a young boy risked his life to save his dog from a very fast flowing river. Though it seemed obvious the reason he saved the dog, still I wanted to know his opinion. When asked he replied " to you its a pet, to me its more than a friend".

But i still didn;'t know the dung pool can be so deep? or perhaps she slipped and hit something hard and fell unconscious
08:38 May 4, 2011 by karex
@muscle

You're right. My dog to me is the same as my own child and I would do the same to protect or save her that I would do for my husband or child, or any other person. As someone else pointed out. It really is not clear what happened. I think it could just as easily have been the case of the dog dying while trying to save her life after she fell in.

BTW, it is because of this capacity for unconditional love for us that makes me love dogs the same way right back.
10:02 May 4, 2011 by jack sprat
My guess is that the dog didn't get very far before realizing it was in deep sh!t or else possibly simply slipped in.

The owner could have been trying to reach the dog from the edge of the slurry lagoon standing on the edge of the slippy sheeting and slid in herself.

They both could have been floundering very close to the side for quite a long time ,trying to get a grip on something to pull themselves out, before eventually running out of energy.

Certainly not a pleasant way to go if that was the case.

There's one thing you should know about dung pools and particularly dung containers - there are toxic fumes that may quickly overcome you. This particular pool looks open so it maybe was not the issue, but there have been many cases where workers succumb to gasses in indoor facilities with dung pools. The cause for death may not be drowning in the stuff, it is suffocation because the air lacks oxygen.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that his faithful dog had been dead for many years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. As he reached the wall, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch, and the street that led to the gate made from pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water? We have traveled far," the man said.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment, remembering all the years this dog remained loyal to him and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk he came to a plain dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water? We have traveled far."

"Yes, sure, there's a faucet over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in and help yourself."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to his dog.

"There should be a bowl by the faucet; he is welcome to share."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned faucet with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No. We're just happy that they screen out the folks who'd leave their best friends behind in exchange for material things."
02:23 May 5, 2011 by Potrero
pjtaipale has it. I believe you can suffocate even in an open-air manure lagoon (as they are delightfully termed in the U.S.), or at the very least lose consciousness. It's not unusual for would-be rescuers to succumb to the fumes and perish themselves.

calebian22 GREAT STORY! I had not heard that one before! You made my day!

Unfortunately most people have no idea just how dangerous these pits are. I am really interested in the fact that there seems to be a security fence and yet the dog still made it inside? Is a better fence required? If a dog got in wouldn't a kid be able to get in too?

The idiot who said they would not go in to save a dog but would go in to save another human would also be dead and so now you have 2 dead humans! DO NOT GO IN THERE!

I thought at first that maybe she was a mussie and it reminded her of the 'Swimmin' pool back home. Too bad more of them didn't follow suit : - )
08:46 May 10, 2011 by RitaPita
Like someone here already said: maybe the woman fell in first and the dog tried to save her?

That would also seem quite plausible.... I don't think the police had much to base their deductions on other than two dead bodies.
