Swedish women hit harder by STD rise: study

Published: 6 May 11 10:08 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/33616/20110506/

Gonorrhoea and syphilis are making a comeback in Sweden, with the number of reported cases among young women soaring by nearly 60 percent in 2010.

According to new statistics from the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet), there was a 38 percent rise in reported cases of the two diseases among Swedes in general.

Worst hit, however, are young women between 15 and 24, where the number of cases increased by 57 percent.

“We don’t really know why, more than that women clearly aren’t afraid of being with new partners without using protection,” said Inga Velicko, epidemiologist at the Institute.

A study mapping out Swedish sexual habits presented earlier in April showed that only 30 percent of young Swedes use a condom during sex.

One of the reasons behind the disappointing numbers is that young Swedes put too much trust in contraceptive pills and too little in condoms, according to Karin Stenqvist, an expert on sexually transmitted disease from Gothenburg University.

“Because the contraceptive pill is supposed to make you 99 percent safe from unwanted pregnancy and the condom 92 percent, many feel that the pill is safer. But that only applies if the pill is taken meticulously,” she told the Local at the time.

As a rule, the recommendations in Sweden are to use both the pill and a condom. The former to avoid unwanted pregnancy and the latter to avoid STDs. But according to Karin Stenqvist this works against the use of a condom.

“This is not a feasible alternative for the broad public and there are few young people that choose to use both. Instead the condom becomes a second choice and often is not used at all,” she said.

According to Velicko, young people today are also less scared of HIV than before, which also leads to fewer using the condom as their contraceptive of choice.

"It is seen as a chronic disease and not necessarily something you have to die from," Velicko said.

She also pointed out that many STDs show no symptoms at all and many suferers are unaware they carry a disease.

842 people were reported to have contracted gonorrhoea in Sweden last year, of which more than half were from the greater Stockholm area.

199 cases of Syphilis were reported last year, an increase of 10 percent from the previous year.

In the case of Chlamydia the numbers have dropped slightly but the there is an increasing trend in Chlamydia cases since 1997 in Sweden.

Syphilis and Chlamydia numbers are increasing most among Swedish 15-to-29 year olds.

Just goes to show either they are just plain stupid......or drunk! I dont believe there is not enough education being given,so its down to their own personal choice and behaviour. This is not good, both these can have long term health effects. Well, what does this say about young Stockholmers?
11:31 May 6, 2011 by lili2010
Teach them to abstain from doing it before marriage and see the result
11:45 May 6, 2011 by DamnImmigrant
I like the poster that says -

Congratulations! You dodged a BULLET! Consider yourself lucky because you got gonorrhea! Next time it might be HIV!

lili2010 yeah, right, abstinence really works. Teaching abstinence is as worthless as teaching nothing at all. Emphasizing condom use is the better idea.

@DamnImmigrant;

http://www.thelocal.se/33026/20110405/

condom use isn't very popular it seems, and I don't think that most young Swedes are devout Catholics! (Even most Catholics use condoms nowadays, whatever the Pope says).

Abstinence and monogamy are the only fail-proof methods for preventing STDs.

"Abstinence and monogamy are the only fail-proof methods for preventing STDs."

Absolutely true statement that is worthless in its impact. (As the computer tech joke goes, It is easy to see you work for Microsoft.)

I am more fascinated with the idea that condoms are not being used. I know my daughters had condom training in school. I will have to ask them when they get home what is up with condoms.

Like I said be thankful it was ONLY (name some STD) and not HIV. - Many teenagers see themselves impervious to danger.
12:46 May 6, 2011 by hilt_m
condom training in school is not really enough, it's pretty much a 1 shot deal (no pun intended) once done it's filed away in the back of the brain and not really thought about all that much. what we rally need is re-enforcement such as a tv advert campaign, poster on public transport, and a higher availability of condom vending machines,

People should also be forced to take yearly STD tests. it's painless and results are returned within a week.

Simple, but im sure many people will disagree and before you say anything, i had mine done a week ago :)

As long as any kind of person is allowed into the night club, drunkenness is not considered an offense, all of what mentioned above will be of no use. Cos these nasty incidences take place mostly when drunk. I cannot count the number of Swedish girls who have told me '' You are a cute guy'' in their drunken state. But in their normal senses, I will always be the brown guy most of'em hate. What do you expect when a child at 17years is preparing to flee from his parents/guardians home just to be free to do what ever he/she likes? In short, the system is even infected with a disease worst than these STDs . Revise the system before complaining.

why not.its also easy to jump into bed with the girls here on the first time.noone asks of condom.they always fly around thailand, turkey ans the rest other place.more especially thailand.am so pissed with what i saw on my visit to thailand .our girls move up and down.i was ashamed of what i saw.

It's obviously that those kind of sick are brought in Europe by the immigrants.

I f you're gonna play and don't want to pay then WRAP IT!! Come on people get some sex education and protect your health and life.
22:38 May 6, 2011 by planet.sweden
Exactly the same thing happened in Britain when Labour threw open the doors to mass immigration.

This was as predicatable as night following day.

Inga Velicko, epidemiologist at the Institute may profess to be all confused as to the cause of this surge in cases but that's because like so many state sector employees he forbidden from saying out loud what he may know to be the truth. Either that or he's stupid.

And it will get worse. He's a prediction for a a Local headline in 2013.

"Doctors baffled by surging number of HIV cases in Stockholm..."

Duh.

No matter what STDs we got, herpes (HSV1, HSV2), HPV, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, syphilis or others? life is still worth living, so lets get on with it!!!

STDdatings. com is an exclusive community only for people with STDs. to get help and advice, find trusted people to talk. no rejection or discrimination because we all understand.

now its blamed on immigrants,-its ridiculous to blame it on anyone than selves.sorry if you get it bear it.its carelessness
00:45 May 8, 2011 by DamnImmigrant
My daughters indicate that indeed there is not enough discussion in school and that there should be a LOT more PSA (public service announcements) reminding people of the disease preventative aspects. Too much focus on birth control and not enough on disease prevention.
09:16 May 8, 2011 by Zhorka
It is immigrant's fault that Swedish girls have a lot of unprotected sex with multiple partners. Sounds about right to me. On planet sweden, anyway.
12:45 May 8, 2011 by IXUS
Swedish women have always had unprotected sex with many partners. It's been part of living in a care free society which covered itself through a responsible attitude towards STDs.

The difference now is that there are hundreds of thousands of migrants from Africa and other third world countries who don't play by the rules, don't feel any need to get themselves checked and act irresponsibly.

But I agree with you Swedish women have to be pretty dumb to sleep with such people. One potential Swedish victim in waiting can be viewed here...

13:17 May 8, 2011 by jamesblish
I don't understand this. The numbers were way higher only 10-15 years ago. Why are people being this foolish? Always use a condom with a new sexual partner. Always.
14:30 May 8, 2011 by DavidtheNorseman
And yet we still lie to the next generation and tell them that condoms stop STD's when they don't:

http://www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/204/37/

There is NO way to stop STD's except monogamy. Sorry, mates.
17:10 May 8, 2011 by jamesblish
I don't think anyone would dispute that having fewer sexual partners will reduce the risk of catching an STD. Kind of goes without saying in my opinion. Fewer partners doesn't have to mean monogamy however. I mean, if you're for monogamy, why stop there? Let's stop having sex altogether, that must be the best way?

I'm all for a serious debate on this but unfortunately, they frequently become infested with Jesus freaks. Not saying the previous poster is one, but they're always there, waiting to unleash their contempt for the secular way of life.
18:14 May 8, 2011 by cogito
Your bigotry is showing. No sign of a Jesus freak on this thread. Maybe they're hiding under your bed.
18:34 May 8, 2011 by jamesblish
I don't recall saying there were any in this thread? I don't think anyone would dispute the existance of such loons however.

There is always a problem in trying to get kids to use condoms because there will always be those who feels as though they're going against the grain by not doing as they're told. If enough people use condoms, it becomes cool not to. And the fear of AIDS etc. wears off after awhile, it's sad but it's true.
