Woman found pregnant despite abortion

A woman who had undergone an abortion continued to suffer morning sickness and pile on the weight and a further examination, three months later, showed that she was still pregnant.

The woman had decided to terminate the pregnancy and underwent an abortion at Frölunda hospital in Gothenburg in the ninth week.

When she continued to feel off-colour and pile on the pounds she returned to the hospital and was told that the symptoms could by psychosomatic, according to a report in the Expressen daily.

But her insistence ensured that she was ultimately given an appointment with a gynaecologist at Östra hospital, almost three months after she had undergone an abortion.

The new examination determined that she was still pregnant, now in the 19th week.

"It came as a complete shock to me and all of my family," the woman told the newspaper.

Doctors were able to conclude that the the baby was healthy, but discovered a cyst that had gone undetected during her initial examinations.

The pregnant woman has now reported the matter to the National Board of Health & Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) on the advice of the gynaecologist.

What the heck did the abortion remove? A twin perhaps?
10:50 May 12, 2011 by foxpur
Likely a cyst was removed, or part of it, they can resemble the same tissue.

Is there a rule in sweden regarding till how many months of pregnancy you can go for abortion? or is it you can abort any time?
16:56 May 12, 2011 by karex
@muscle

There is a time limit yes, but I don't know how long - it's measured in weeks I think.

Both the mother and the doctors have to assign a significant part of their future life fro prison time. The baby is gonna accuse his/her mother for attempted murder:).
22:23 May 12, 2011 by dizzymoe33
What about the trauma to the woman now she has to carry this baby to full term and then decide to keep the baby or have the baby put up for adoption. Terrible situation for everyone no matter what the final decision is.
23:09 May 12, 2011 by Joyous
That baby is a survivor and might grow up to be someone wonderful. Poetic justice if that happens. It might be traumatic for the mother in the beginning, but it is possible that after she gives birth, she will love him/her and regret she tried to kill him/her.

a proper D&E for a termination of pregnancy includes a full scraping of the inner lining of the uterus in order to be sure that no placental tissue is left behind which might bleed or become infected. In fact, the dilitation of the cervix itself - which makes the cervix temporarily incompetent - would normally lead to a spontaneous miscarriage even if the doctor didn't do a full D&E.

Very difficult to understand how this could happen, unless the doctor simply didn't perform the intended procedure. Or, and I hate to bring this up, the girl is a nut case.

Not so difficult to happen in Sweden, I'm afraid. They could have given her the wrong surgery. I heard of a case where a man went in to have an in-frown toe nail removed and came out sterilized - mixed-up paperwork. Quite common here I suspect.

@SwediePie

Why would she be a nut case???

Last year I took are of a patient who came to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain. A simple xray of his abdomen showed the there was a surgical needle somewhere in his belly. As it turned out he had recently had surgery. Everyone involved in the case was certain that a needle had been left behind by the prior surgeon. When we opened him up we couldn't find the needle any where within the abdominal cavity. An Xray in the operating room revealed the that the needle was there alright but it was not within the peritoneal cavity where we would expect it to be after a surgical mistake. When we finally found it the needle was WITHIN THE LUMEN OF THE BOWEL. In other words, he had swallowed the needle to create the impression that the prior doctor had made a mistake..

There are nuts everywhere.

This is the exact story that happened on the American TV show, Private Practice, on Thursday night. A woman had an early abortion and they said that sometimes, very rarely, it doesn't work. She was 19 weeks pregnant when they discovered the mistake. They ended up performing a late term abortion. The episode really bothered me when I watched it yesterday and then I saw this. Weird.

I really feel for the woman in this situation.

that baby is the mesiah of the world ;)
10:34 May 16, 2011 by foxpur
@krrodman

A D&E in a uterus lining affect by a Cyst can cause the cyst to be blocking the lining scrape causing a false view of it having worked. You scape the cyst tissue rather than the lining.

There is supposed to be a exam that checks for things like this because the D&E can fail but appear to work. As they said, it was previously undetected cyst. The effect is well published but doesn't happen very often.

This is not an unusual situation at all. That is why follow up examinations are important. Someone that I know, had an abortion, neglected follow up and found herself still pregnant. She gave birth to a pretty little girl but w/ half an arm. She thought legal advice but since she did not follow doctors order for follow up visits she was out of luck. Perhaps the daughter can sue the MD if he is still alive that is.

No - ordinary abortions can only be performed until week 18 of pregnancy (4 months) -in exceptional circumstances abortions may be allowed up to week 22 on medical grounds but it requires a specifiic certificate of approval from the National Board of Health and Welfare

- around 95% of all abortions are performed before week 12

- less than 1% are in week 18 or later

Abortions are not permitted in from week 22 onwards

Lets see what she tells the kid when its of age! that your it tried to get rid of you! So much for motherly love!!!
10:53 May 19, 2011 by foxpur
@lunneia

I would suspect she would give up the child for adoption.. or, as has happened (points at himself) I was told I initially wasn't wanted and would have been adopted but getting an abortion was illegal in my area at the time (no longer true) but that once I was born my mom wanted to keep me... I and quite pleased with that. I prefer the honest approach.
