There is a time limit yes, but I don't know how long - it's measured in weeks I think.
a proper D&E for a termination of pregnancy includes a full scraping of the inner lining of the uterus in order to be sure that no placental tissue is left behind which might bleed or become infected. In fact, the dilitation of the cervix itself - which makes the cervix temporarily incompetent - would normally lead to a spontaneous miscarriage even if the doctor didn't do a full D&E.
Very difficult to understand how this could happen, unless the doctor simply didn't perform the intended procedure. Or, and I hate to bring this up, the girl is a nut case.
Not so difficult to happen in Sweden, I'm afraid. They could have given her the wrong surgery. I heard of a case where a man went in to have an in-frown toe nail removed and came out sterilized - mixed-up paperwork. Quite common here I suspect.
Why would she be a nut case???
Last year I took are of a patient who came to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain. A simple xray of his abdomen showed the there was a surgical needle somewhere in his belly. As it turned out he had recently had surgery. Everyone involved in the case was certain that a needle had been left behind by the prior surgeon. When we opened him up we couldn't find the needle any where within the abdominal cavity. An Xray in the operating room revealed the that the needle was there alright but it was not within the peritoneal cavity where we would expect it to be after a surgical mistake. When we finally found it the needle was WITHIN THE LUMEN OF THE BOWEL. In other words, he had swallowed the needle to create the impression that the prior doctor had made a mistake..
There are nuts everywhere.
I really feel for the woman in this situation.
A D&E in a uterus lining affect by a Cyst can cause the cyst to be blocking the lining scrape causing a false view of it having worked. You scape the cyst tissue rather than the lining.
There is supposed to be a exam that checks for things like this because the D&E can fail but appear to work. As they said, it was previously undetected cyst. The effect is well published but doesn't happen very often.
- around 95% of all abortions are performed before week 12
- less than 1% are in week 18 or later
Abortions are not permitted in from week 22 onwards
I would suspect she would give up the child for adoption.. or, as has happened (points at himself) I was told I initially wasn't wanted and would have been adopted but getting an abortion was illegal in my area at the time (no longer true) but that once I was born my mom wanted to keep me... I and quite pleased with that. I prefer the honest approach.
