Saade success renews Swedish Eurovision faith

Published: 15 May 11 09:03 CET | Print version

After years of disappointment, Sweden’s Eurovision Song Contest fans had cause for celebration on Saturday after Eric Saade finished third in Germany.

As millions of Swedes performed their annual well honed ritual of tuning into a show that has brought only misery for so long, Saade’s third place marked the best result for 12 years.

To cap a good night for the country, the winning song, Azerbaijan’s “Running Scared” was written by two Swedes, Sandra Bjurman and Stefan Örn and a whole back-up production team, from stylists to make up artists was drafted in from here.

Saade’s placing was seen as a huge success and sparked off a night of partying in Dusseldorf for the team.

“It was my personal goal, to win back Sweden's honor,” said Saade to Expressen.

“We managed to make the top three, and all of Europe loved us!”

At one point Saade’s song “Popular”, written by Arash Labaf, which had won the semi final on Thursday, was leading the voting, but as the night dragged on it became ever more clear that the Azerbaijani pair Eli/Nikki would sweep the prize. Saade though was magnanimous in defeat.

“It was nice to be beaten by Azerbaijan, it is a fantastic song by a Swedish songwriter. It was a victory for Sweden all round this year. For me personally, statistically speaking, the runner-up and third placed act who get to release their other singles across Europe will be successful. So for me this was the best thing that could happen, but I still wanted to see a Sweden victory.”

Seriously, what sort of write up was that?

It borders on the sort of propaganda one would expect from a dictorial state.
10:47 May 15, 2011 by Kevgio
how the swedes even finished 3rd with that tripe song this year is a mystery to me, it was utter garbage. more of the same tacky junk theyve churned out in years gone by. i dont know why the italians came back this year to lower themselves to this organized vote rigging festival, theyre song was 10x better than the winners anyway.
11:01 May 15, 2011 by Localer
the winner song even more garbage....and italy second ? GOSH!
11:10 May 15, 2011 by Plowbridge
I agree with byke. Does the local have any integrity or will this callow sycophancy continue with more lowest denominator journalism in the future?

If TL wants to fly the flag for Sweden regardless of honesty, then they should know that a very large chunk here don't bother with this campfest of poor quality music and therefore they are representing opinion in a self indulgent light only.

It's embarrassing that Brits are running this show.

I reackon Steve Coogan should enter for Portugal next year with "Papa Bendi". When will Swedes ever learn this is supposed to be a joke contest and not something seriously musical
12:41 May 15, 2011 by swedejane
In a night filled with the corniest and most vapid music I've heard in my life, Saade's "I will be popular" broke new ground. It literally gave me douche chills...perhaps they were only out done by Ireland, but that was more creepy than douchey.

It's such a shame that in a country with such talented musicians, Sweden puts this kind of bottom feeding swill out to a live international TV audience. I'll stick with the cool, authentic swedish bands...this Saade can enjoy their, hopefully, very brief 15min of fame.

Too bad folks, Europe likes them that means it wasn't bad for so many. Remember everyone have different tastes for music.
14:11 May 15, 2011 by idahoffman
Fredrik Kempe is the author of the song "Popular", not Arash Labaf. He gave his interview and was with Eric Saade all the time during his participation in Eurovision 2011. Fredrik Kempe wrote 4 songs for different singers in ESC during last years. Blessings to you all....
15:30 May 15, 2011 by philster61
How can he be considered successful? He didn't win......
15:51 May 15, 2011 by keepvogel
Has anyone ever seen a contestant or even a winner get a serious music career?

I haven't.
16:09 May 15, 2011 by glamelixir
Keepvogel: What about Abba?

Not to mention The Ark has a career before and after being in it. And these are only a couple of examples.
16:22 May 15, 2011 by J Jack
He can't even pronounce Popular, they sing Populeur, ha ha what a joke.
17:51 May 15, 2011 by sparc
You people are unbelievable and total hypocrites. Eurovision never pretended to be a "serious" music contest. Eurovision is what it is, it has a specific standard and all countries compete against THAT same standard. Do you think that it is easy? Do you think that it is ridiculous? Of course it is, but does any of that make it any less entertaining? Or do you thing that just because the standard is low, the competition is easier. On the contrary, the lower the standard the harder the competition. The hardest type of acting is comedy, I hope that should tell you something. Or is it bad for people to strive being first in an entertaining and ridiculous event.

Eurovision is what it is and people like it, live with it and by the way nobody cares about your hate-comments. I'm only posting this cause It frustrates that I have to dig through your comments in order to read the ones that actually matter.

All in all and apart from sweden's song, I was really into either moldova or ireland. It's a pity these two song didn't get very high in the voting. Italy's song was great but not that great.
19:27 May 15, 2011 by swedejane
@sparc

"On the contrary, the lower the standard the harder the competition."

So the Olympics must be extremely easy by your logic.
22:45 May 15, 2011 by Ivan Juric
Eurovision song contest has become a pile of crap bubble gum pop music. Italy coming second demonstrates this and as for Swedens song about being popular words can't describe my thoughts on that one.
23:05 May 15, 2011 by TomasBrolin
Are some of these people on drugs? Saade is a f**king legend!!! Even better than last year's 'Manboy' attempt. Eurovision is one of the best events of the year. Yes, it's tacky, political and sometimes the songs sound pretty awful, but you have to love it.

If anything it presents an easy evening of drinking games and xenophobia! There are far too many non-European countries entering nowadays thanks to the break-up of the Soviet Union (who will win next? Peru? Fiji?), but I'll always be a fan.

HEJA SVERIGE! HEJA SAADE!
00:46 May 16, 2011 by Leo Danial
It was a great show with bad results !!!!!!!!!!!!

Niether of the 3 winners deserve those hhigh ranks!!!!!!!!!!!

Should we be happy for Saade & Sverige? Yes we should ... because Saade is from middle eastern roots & did the job so well in these circumstances.

I hope that next year Sweden will choose a very good song & a very good singer ... male or female ... pure swedish or immigrant ...

I hope next year the the voters all around Eorope will be more mature & educated!

I hope the doors could be open for some Arab singers ... since it is opened for bad singers from other Asian countries ... that go to the top!
02:09 May 16, 2011 by philster61
Kinda strange to see Arabs representing Sweden in their beloved Grand Prix. I had to explain to my British friends that they hadn't got the flags mixed up and they were indeed representing Sweden.... But hey, This is the new Sweden. I suspect next years "swedish" entrants will be all wearing Bhurkas.
07:25 May 16, 2011 by fauna
@Philster61: Thanks for expressing it in such a nice way. This situation reminds me of the famous "French" national football team.
09:28 May 16, 2011 by StockholmSam
Check YouTube for 'Eric Saade Popular Live Lead Vocals' and you will hear what he sounds like without his backup singers. Notice in the final that he had two 'dancers' on stage who did not dance at all but rather stood there singing on the edge of the stage. This is because in Sweden he could have recorded vocal tracks supporting his performance but at the final, no recorded vocals were allowed so they had to add better live singers to his performance. His voice is bloody awful and I don't care if he is dancing while singing. If he is going to sing a song well and can't do it while dancing, then he should damn well stop dancing and sing the song.
17:23 May 16, 2011 by philster61
Indeed fauna. But France are in a far serious situation than Sweden. But then again France will deal with it better than Sweden also.....
20:24 May 16, 2011 by Rishonim
@Fauna & Philster61. How cute; seems like love at first sight. What next? Cheap hotel room above a gas station; repair shop dog barking and a six pack of 9% alcohol beer? You guys don't miss an opportunity to bringing ethnicity and race into every discussion. Marmote
00:48 May 17, 2011 by Mack
Who cares about his ethnicity... the song was pure @$##@ and he can't sing. It seems the great Eurovision song contest is more a pouting and posing contest.
01:28 May 17, 2011 by caps.lock
people, there is no absolute winner, everything is based on votes, whichever song gets more votes, wins. Saade did not win with absolute majority of votes in Melodifestivalen. it was a good - eurovision style song, although I liked Nicke Borg's song more. I thought Eric will win, but Azerbaijan won. Welcome to Baku next years, mina damer o herrar
05:01 May 17, 2011 by Da Goat
I thought it so bad in the semi finals I was amazed it got thru, so did not even bother to watch the final show, Europe does indeed have different taste to what I have I reckoned all the songs that got in were tacky and rubbish.

The Irish who normally have something of quality, were so bad they should be shot. the other set of twins I saw were at least easy to look at (and sang better too)
02:01 May 18, 2011 by philster61
Gee... Rishonim, never thought of that..... Sounds good to me.....your a smart cookie...

And considering the Eurovison is made up of races and ethnicity, what would be a better time to bring up the subject of the Swedish confusion regarding who is Swedish. One sure as hell would not expect to see a bunch of blond blue eyed Nordics representing an Arab country now would they? I'll have to have a night out in Malmo sometime to remind myself whereabouts I am....
08:56 May 18, 2011 by fauna
@Rishonim: if you want to join a 3some you are more than welcome, we have a Swedish open character and our 6 pack is enough for the three of us.........

Now, if you don't agree with us is your problem, you can go to Rosengard and spread your love around with those open cultures seeking interaction with the locals. Bet my ass you are Swedish........
09:07 May 19, 2011 by helveeta
Eric Saade is an okay singer. I am embarrassed to say I have seen him perform live (I have a 5 year old). And he sounded good, he was definitely singing live and there were no back up dancers. It was at a kids festival in my town. I will say he looked shorter and heavier in person and didn't exude the star quality he has on TV. I have heard quoted to say he wants to be the next Robyn and to that I have to feel bad for him. He's not THAT good. And that guy who's writing his songs needs to be fired or he will only ever be "Popular" within the Dagis circuit.
21:26 May 19, 2011 by Lyn FS
Oh just what the world needs... another JUSTIN BIEBER...
19:32 May 31, 2011 by Amber Dawn
"Saade is a f**king legend!!! Even better than last year's 'Manboy' attempt."

It wouldn't take much to beat that pile of crap. Manboy was like torture. Popular was more like a root canal with no novocaine. The only thing worse than the song contest is the fact that they play it all on the radio for months on end afterward.
22:29 June 2, 2011 by Icarusty
I'm looking forward to the Chinese and Australian entries next year. Azerbaijan is, after all, closer to them than it is the heart of Europe.

And did anyone notice the Pokeball on Saade's background? I hope Nintendo sue for copyright infringement!!!
12:25 June 9, 2011 by infidel2012
This dude is going to have his hands full trying restore Sweden's honor.

First he'll need to get into politics and start making some drastic changes to the immigration policies, or lack there of.

Heja Sverige, Time to wake up : )
