Sweden's Queen Silvia to probe family Nazi links

Queen Silvia and her relatives are set to investigate reports of her father's alleged links with Nazism.

“The Queen will use her contacts in Germany and Brazil," royal spokesman Bertil Ternert told newsagency TT. The results of this research will be officially published, he added.

According to widely spread reports, the Queen's father, Walther Sommerlath, who died in 1990, joined the Nazi party in 1934.

Last year a TV4 documentary series Kalla Fakta (The Cold Facts) reported a widely rumoured story that on his return from Brazil, as part of the so-called Aryanisation of Jewish assets in Germany in 1939, he took over a factory which was owned by a Jew.

Silvia, who has previously made public her desire to be more open with the press reacted angrily to the revelations in the documentary and replied with a private letter of complaint to Jan Scherman, who was general manager of the television channel at the time.

She denied her father was ever politically active or even in the military and Sommerlath continued to deny the allegations and any membership in the Nazi Party up untll his death.

Silva has been criticised widely in the press for not clarifying the stories which have refused to go away, so the news that she now wants to make a full investigation of the links between Germany and Brazil as well as between the Jewish family and her own will come as quite a surprise.

“The difficulty is that this happened over 70 years ago, there has been a World War in between and so much is incomplete. However the Queen would still like to make an effort to produce as clear picture as is possible,” said Ternert.

Why the obsession with people who might have known someone that was a Nazi. It would seem to be more important to deal with the modern version of Nazism, Radical Islam.
21:46 May 15, 2011 by swedejane
Try and explaining that to someone who lost their parents in the holocaust. It's not mutually exclusive...understanding the past does not preclude us from dealing with the present and future. Many enlightened people might think it's actually fundamental.
22:42 May 15, 2011 by FourSaabs
So what if he was a Nazi?

Why should the Queen be held responsible for the alleged sins of her father?
23:26 May 15, 2011 by GLO
You have to respect her interest in setting the record straight. That is always of benefit to those involved. Good for her!
02:26 May 16, 2011 by Syftfel
Now watch the rock throwing left, the socialist rats, and aftonbladet's spin doctors have a field day with this one. "She's a Nazi!!!!!" "She killed six million jews!!!!!!" They'll be milking this story, spinning the facts, and spread innuendo like you've never seen. This has to be manna from heaven for all those hostile, and full of hatred, to Sweden remaining a kingdom.
03:47 May 16, 2011 by TheOneWhoTravels
Lots of people were Nazis or Nazi sympathizers to one degree or another back then. Prescott Bush, father of the first President George Bush, helped finance the Nazis from America.

Lots of people were Nazis or Nazi sympathizers to one degree or another

And lots were not Nazis.

Why not wait for the result of the inquiry before throwing mud.

The problem is that there was a tremendous theft of wealth by the Nazis and it could come out that the fundamental wealth of the Queen's family could have been stolen from Jews. Maybe not, but it is worth investigating. Property stolen by the Nazis can sometimes be traced back to the rightful owners.

The UK Royals are German heritage.

Stories like this just fuel's the idiots!
09:35 May 16, 2011 by wenddiver
This is the Left's eqivalent of the Birther movement in the US on the the right. The World is right to ignore both.

I am sure the former King is innocent. I am equally sure that things were done to convince the NAZIS that Sweden was friendly so she didn't end up like Norway and Denmark.

In the end the King let the Jews fleeing the NAZIS from Denmark and Norway into Sweden and that was a very dangerous decision and worth a lot more than a lot of leftist talking trash while doing nothing to disrupt the NAZIS plans.
09:39 May 16, 2011 by Nemesis
There is no royal family in Europe that is not related to a World War 2 nazi.

There were companies that were taken over by the Swedish government in 1940 to keep the nazis happy. Most of them were in resources.

I don't like royalty, but blaming a child for their parents actions, is a twisted thing to do.

Sweetdishgurl

your suggestion of a equivalence between Israelis (oddly you chose to say jews) and the Nazis is bizarre.

The Nazis would simply have exterminated the Palestinain population - instead it the Palestinians are alive angry and among the fastest growing in the world.
11:17 May 16, 2011 by johnny1939
Even if Herr Sommerlath was the biggest nazi in Germany it has nothing to do w/ our Queen who was not even born in 1939. I do not understand why she has to defend herself. We Swedes love her and she is a wonderful Queen and an extra ordinary representative for Sweden. She cannot undo anything her father might have done. It is very easy to condemn situations that happened so long ago. Just make sure they do not happen again(yea right nobody ever learns)
11:21 May 16, 2011 by jackx123
Larry Trash you are absolutely right.

We have to remember that Germans/Nazis were highly regarded in the world before/during and after WWII.

The Swedish socialite spoke german in the prominent circles and if you did't well...

After the war invention were put into science across the world and the saturn project in the US was a development of the german war efforts.
12:11 May 16, 2011 by TwoToTango
Could be great PR for the royal family and indeed this country if they give some sort of compensation to any children who where affected by the queens fathers actions.
12:22 May 16, 2011 by johnny1939
The Queen and the royal family are not guilty of anything. Most of the Guilty people are dead. God I am so sick of having to relive all this again and again..enough!!!!
12:35 May 16, 2011 by engagebrain
by jackx123 we have to remember that Germans/Nazis were highly regarded in the world before/during and after WWII.

No

They were and are a racist, anti democractic, mass murdering scum.

Anyone who thinks they weer highly regarded should be treated with extreme caution.
12:38 May 16, 2011 by Twiceshy
The point is: royal families always produced war and racism, they needed racism to justify attack on other countries. From the middle age till today, royal families are the cause of spreading racism in society, today, political police help them about it with their rats (journalists, right wing extremists, etc). In any case, Hitler would never get power if he didn't have support from riches (industrialists and other crazy profiteers).
12:53 May 16, 2011 by TwoToTango
You are the one who should be treated with caution. You can't change history based on modern believes.

The nazis where held in high regard by some. Sure, the old ruling powers such as Britain felt threatened by a new superpower and many viewed it with suspicion because of being a dictatorship and all. But treating minorities badly was not rare at this point in history. Eugenics was all the rage back then. And you gotta keep in mind the "good" superpower of the time was an empire that had colonised and subjugated loads of countries. The king of Sweden had real power back then, Austria had been a monarchy just recently, as had germany, etc. Being a dictatorship with a bad record on the treatment of minorities was not all that unusual. Even in the west.
13:00 May 16, 2011 by TheOriginalBlackMan
What the Europeans cannot forgive Hitler for is not the crime in itself, the crime against man, it is not the humiliation of man as such, it is the crime against the White man,. The humiliation of the white man and the fact that Hitler applied to Europe colonialist procedures which until then had been reserved for the Arabs of Algeria, the Coolies of India and the Blacks of Africa.

WW2 was a fine example of white on white violence with over 80 million whites killed.

We should be all so proud of such a rich and nobel legacy, plus the germans make better cars, right?
15:56 May 16, 2011 by engagebrain
12:53 May 16, 2011 by TwoToTango But treating minorities badly was not rare at this point in history. Eugenics was all the rage back then.

Either killiing or putting your political opponents in concentration camps and outright murder of jews, gypsies, Poles, Slavs and homosexuals was very rare at this point in history. Only the USSR came close. Sweden stuck to forced sterlization.

While eugenics was widely discussed, actually killing those deemed to be inferior was something of a breakthrough.

Why are so many posers apologizing for the Nazis by suggesting that they operated within the normal politcal limits.
16:59 May 16, 2011 by abraham lezama
I will like to know if gypsies are searching somebody, or any other minority from those times, why always NAZIs from the 40s? are still people in Israel angry?

and is completly out of sense to criticize the Queen with this kind of comments.

very bad

Glory to the Queen! Glory to Norway! leave them alone.
18:04 May 16, 2011 by cookiemaster
Sweden, you have a lovely couple for King and Queen:)))
18:33 May 16, 2011 by William Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha
That's nothing. The British king (Edward VIII) fraternised with Hilter and leaked confidential military information to him because he wanted Hitler to win. Some say his nazi bum chums were the real reason he was pressured into abdicating.
21:39 May 16, 2011 by johnny1939
Good riddance whatever the reason. Mrs. Simpson was to old for childbearing and a disgusting person.
16:26 May 17, 2011 by jimthat
good for them

they put our queen on knees

i can hear the strepitous laughs

where in the world could they find a country full of lambs like sweden

we are heading seriously to be considered the most stupid people in the world

allways prone to buy any cheap self guilt thesis they throw

this is just the begining as they say

the next president of sweden they will urge us to be a non white

and it seems we are going to obey
16:56 May 17, 2011 by Patriot11
Sorry doesn't matter whether your country or old leaders had nazi connections. My country, the US, has been sucked dry and near bankruptcy by the same folks using the past as tool to garner sympathy (whether as funding or UN Sec. Council Vote). It's terrible and should be a lesson to other nations.
20:18 May 17, 2011 by Iraniboy
@Lary Trash

Yes we should know today's Nazis instead! Today's Nazis are Anti-Muslims instead of old Anti-Jews!! Sadly we never learn from the past! We should always repeat the same mistake. Animals learn better from experience!
11:18 May 19, 2011 by motti
Iraniboy don't be so silly. The Moslem nationitself was allied to Nazi Germany. The Grand Mufti and Hitler were best of buddies, Yogoslav Moslems were members of the SS. Your revisionist attitude towards history is extremely flawed.

It is always wrong to blame or brand the child for the parents actions. however, if property has been stolen, then is should be handed back.

The Arab westbank settlers in Gaz and Lebanon etc complain of lsing their home when declared it's independence. Remember Israel was attacked by her Arabneighbours, she was outgunned, outnumbered in everything, while Europe waited for the Arbs to finish off what Hitler started.

Nearly 1 million Jewish refugees were forced out or fled from Arab and Moslem countries. At most, they were allowed one suitcase, all too often with just rags on their backs. They were made to live in tents before they could be rehoused. Unlike the oil rich Arabs who use their compatriots as political ammunition, Israel just got on with the job ans received no aid from any country. I suggest you and your re-religionists do the same.
