Sweden fall at Finnish hockey hurdle

Sweden were given a hockey lesson in their World Championship final clash with Finland on Sunday, with their Nordic neighbours coming back from a goal down to walk away wit the title 6-1 in the Bratislava arena.

Janne Pesonen collected a goal and an assist, while 'keeper Petri Vehanen produced 32 saves to grab the second world title for Finland.

"We proved that we're strong and menthally tough team," said Finland forward Leo Komarov.

"After the Swedes scored we didn't panic, we were working hard and managed to come back with a five-goal streak in the third period.

"I think we won the championship deservedly. And I want to believe we will never need to wait for 16 more years for our next win."

The rivals were playing against each other for the fourth time in a world championship final.

Finland, who won their only previous world gold in 1995, beating the Swedes on their home ice, fell behind in the second period when Magnus Paajarvi broke the deadlock firing in from the left face-off circle at 27:40.

The Finns levelled on powerplay with just seven seconds before the break through Jarkko Immonen, who scored his ninth goal here to grab the lead in the goal scorers contest.

Petteri Nokelainen and Niko Kapanen gave Finland a comfortable 3-1 lead, one minute into the third period.

Pesonen, Mika Pyorala and Anti Pihlstrom added further goals late in the third to complete the victory, sending Finland supporters into a celebration of their team's first world title in 16 years.

"It's a very sad and disappointing day for me," Sweden's Patrik Berglund said. "We were in command, we were leading the score. I just don't understand what has happened. We completely lost control. It sucks to lose this way."

Earlier on Sunday the Czech Republic outscored Russia 7-4 in the highest-scoring bronze medal match in the history of the event.

It was the Czechs' fourth bronze medal at world championship level.

Roman Cervenka collected two goals and two assists, while goalie Ondrej Pavelec produced 39 saves to give the Czechs a 8-6 lead in their head-to-head meetings with Russia at the worlds.

With more and more Finnish guys playing for KHL there is no chance Swedes will ever win in the competition against Finland.

All the good Swedes we're unable to lend a hand since they're busy taking out the Sharks in the NHL.

this is yearly competition, nothing to proud about it....agreed with Stickeroo, most prof players are with NHL, and most of the players for this championship are new comers...so its good for them....

this is the second time Finnish won championship in 16 years compared with Swedes 8 times.

Finland won, so no excuses needed.

It was an amazing match. They played better, and they deserved the golden medal . ¡¡ Arriba Finlandia !! Hyvä Suomi !!

The Swedish team forgot to get their testosterone shots before they went out on the ice. Better luck at ping-pong.

@solly

I completely agree with you, but... having no excuses goes against the Swedish idiosyncracy. Year after year I have read how Swedish athletes, tennis players, ice hockey teams, football players,(Zlatan Ibrahimovitch) etc, etc, have always an excuse for having lost. You read that they had headackes, heartburns, fever, had to take care of a little baby the night before, ate too many "tacos", overtrained, a fly disturb them so they could not concentrate, the Coke tasted bad, they fought with their spouses the night before, etc, etc, etc.

Seldom I have read that the opponent was simply better. Another problem is that, like in the case of the hockey team, they brag in advance with the help of the tabloids. "This is how they will make potatismos of the Finns", "This is how we will take them". "Swedish strategy to beat the Finns", and many more. Just read Expressen and Aftonbladet. Both are resonance boxes of Zlatan, Söderling, Swedish thrid place in the European Song Contest, Sofía Arvidsson, "Svennis". You name it.

I saw the match. Finland was many numbers bigger than the Swedes. So simply, whether some recognize it or not. That is irrelevant.

As of this moment, you can be sure that the tabloids will start with a campaign with the following theme: "Wi will take Finland the next time, because we are Swedes and therefore, better". Ho, ho, ho.

The above is one of the many reasons I read more and more The Local, because it is an information media and not an advertising agency for whoever wants to be on the "chandelier".

@J. L. Belmar

Until the last 5 minutes of the second period Tre kronor where the better team. They where cruising in the last 5 minutes of the period and let the Finns score. If I had been the coach, I would have done exactly the same as when I coached junior hockey, and given them a real bollocking during the interval, to ensure they came out fighting in the final period. The current tre kronor coach is a wimp and should not even be let near a girls netball team. plus the netminder was crap, I could name some junior netminders who could do better

@Rick Methven

You must know more about hockey than I, but, allow me to pinpoint that "if" is a very common word to use. If my grandmother could have wheels, she would be a bike; if I had done this ahd that, I would not have so many mistakes in my life. Got it? The point is that the last 5 minuts of the seconc period and the third period, the Finns where many number bigger than the Swedes. That is a fact and not an "if".

As far as your comments about the coach and the netminder, I cannot comment on that, because, as I told you, I am a completely nincompoop in icehockey. I enjoy a match and I can see who is playing better and also if the goalkeeper looks like a beginner or not. But overall, the Finns played better and no excuses, please.

Too bad about the monster score at the end, really, because it doesn't reflect the way the game went. Up until the end of the 2nd half it was a very, very close and exciting game (which is why I like hockey a lot more than, say, football). But at the 3rd period, Sweden just messed up too often and got punished for it almost every time - whereas the Finnish defense was still solid.

Taking the third period in account, the Finns obviously deserved to win, but it's a shame it had to happen this way!
20:38 May 16, 2011 by Zhorka
If it was not for tenacity of the Swedish players the score could become really devastating. 6-1 is the least that could happen to Swedes.
00:40 May 17, 2011 by solly
Whenever any team or nation loses in competition, it is better to congratulate the opponent and not make excuses. When excuses are made, it simply diminishes the credibility of the losers and makes them look like whiners.
00:45 May 17, 2011 by Finnish guy
I don't see what is all the fuss about. Only one team can win the competition and this time the winner happened to be the Finnish team.
00:53 May 17, 2011 by bac25
Dear Rick Methven,

I hope you have recovered from the disappointment and shock.

You are right, the game was evenly balanced until the end of the 2nd period. But that was a great play and score by he Finns. And then the Finns believed and played and the Swedes basically collapsed. As good as you may well be in coaching and as good as your girls netball might be, it normally depends in any sport on the belief and effort of those playing. And generally, it doesn't help if local media scorn the opposition in advance! So, the Finns won it well and pretty emphatically, better to think that both Gold and Silver went to the Nordics! Thats not so bad, and will make for a good competition next year in Helsinki and Stockholm!
07:22 May 17, 2011 by Rick Methven
@bac25

It was the same problem that always happens, Tre Kronor players believe the media hype that made them one of the favourites and they did not have to work at it. That is why they lost to Norway in the group round. Sweden Finland matches are always tight and the skill that Tre Kronor showed in the first 2 periods was good. very good passing and good skating. They slowed down too soon before the end f the second, expecting the Finns to wait to attack until after the break and found out the hard way. The coaches job is to give them a pep talk in the changing room before the final period and get them fired up again. The current coach has the personality of a glass of water and could not inspire the team. What was unacceptable was the way that with the score at 4-1 the team gave up trying and conceded 2 more goals which they should not have done.
