Christian Democrats discuss same-sex adoption stance

A branch of the Christian Democrats in Skåne in the south of Sweden, has made a u-turn on same-sex adoption and is motioning for the party to change its policy at its annual conference in the summer.

“We said no to same-sex adoption because research in the field was inconclusive, and because a number of important authorities were against. Since then, these authorities have changed their view, and we have new research to look into,“ local politician Daniel Sturesson told the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) daily.

When the Swedish Riksdag passed the same-sex adoption bill in 2002, the Christian Democrats were in staunch opposition.

But according to Sturesson the world has changed and it is not reasonable to hold on to old opinions "for old habits sake".

In a motion to this summer’s party conference, which the district branch of the party has supported, Sturesson wants the policy to be updated to reflect the times.

He is referring to new research in a study based on children growing up with two mothers, the "US National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study: Psychological Adjustment of 17-Year-Old Adolescents", by US doctors Nanette Gartrell and Henny Bos.

“Children of single sex parents are not falling behind developmentally or psychologically compared to children with parents of different sexes," he explained to the newspaper.

"The most important issue for our party is what is best for the children, so the logical consequence is that we re-evaluate our standpoint."

Sturesson also thinks that the party’s attitude to these issues is contradictory, as they have said yes to single parents’ rights to adopt.

However, a heated debate is expected, as there are differing opinions within the party.

“A child needs a mother and a father, that is my opinion,“ said Yvonne Andersson to SvD.

That the party is in favour of single parent adoption is something she is concerned about, she told SvD.

“It is an inconsistency I would find hard to tolerate in the long run."

Andersson furthermore wants the party to look into the question of LGBT-adoptions and take into consideration how the situation evolves.

“But I see no reason to change our values,” she told the newspaper.

This is unacceptable not for "old habits sake", but for the sake of truth and psychical health of children. No "new researches" can change the nature's intelligent sex design.

When I read such articles I think that Sharia law is not that bad.

At the end of the day people have to decide which is best, a child growing up in a state run home or in a home with loving and supportive parents.

Who cares if they are gay or straight, if the are willing to look after a child, nurture that child and help them grow into a good citizen?

As long as a child grows up in a nurturing and supportive enviroment, it should not be an issue.

@zeffanyx

I can imagine you do. Sharia law fits perfectly with almost all of Christian law.

It is not just "old habits" - science here is also pretty clear: "Same-sex marriage definitely isn't in the best interest of children.", drtraycehansen.com/Pages/writings_samesex.html

@Zeffanyx: I pity you for your ignorance. You still live in that little fairy tale and so-called "intelligent" design type of world.

Fact: There are so many messed up people (murderers, rapers, criminals) that are brought up by straight couples. Yes, that is your "intelligent" design.

Your comment only manifests itself how ignorant you are.

I was raised by a heterosexual couple and then one day my dad decided he didn't want to be a father anymore. So since I was about 5 years old the only true adult figure I had was and is my mother. So you see as long as there is love and guidance in the home then it really doesn't matter woman/man, woman/woman, or man/man.
22:45 May 16, 2011 by Enjoyourlife
They should not be given children. If everybody turns into homo, where would we get the children to adopt?
00:20 May 17, 2011 by foxpur
@Enjoyourlife

I have known quite a few Homo/Les couples that have children thru surragate donor (often from opposite couples) - For example a Guy couple get a lesbian woman to have the child for the Gay couple, or the Lebian couple get a male to mate with (doesn't matter as much what their sexual orientation is here) and then the ladies get child.

This differs from adoption in that the child who didn't have parents from another couple how has parents to care for them. By base definition, the child is better off.

-For everyone:

I have 4 kids, I am straight. One of my kids is bisexual, another is gay, the other 2 (so far) are straight. I back all of them for their choice. I will treat any same-sex partner with the same respect as a opposite sex. Love is love, deal with it.

Well, there goes another drop for the Christian Dems if this is accepted. Many of the free church congregations support them. This will not make them happy. All they are doing is alienating their base. It is not like the LGBT's are going to start supporting the Christian Democrats.

Well, newer is not always better, as you know. Yes, I'm ignorant to what I see as a devolution of society. This is sticking to realness, not an "old-style" only.

1. I didnt breach your lawys maybe i breached your gay mentality - thelocal staff.

My last question to our gay/lesbin friends. If we let you adopt our children, what are you contributing back? If you can produce children, I will support you? but I will not support the end of the human race and that is what homos advocate for.

@ Nemesis Comment #3

You've probably got the most intelligent comment on this article, thank god/the hierarchy out there that people like you exist! Come of the comments on here are absurd!

At the end of the day the only thing that matters with adoption is that the child is looked after in an appropriate manner, and brought up knowing right from wrong in a loving and caring environment. It doesn't matter what the sexual orientation of their parents is
11:56 May 18, 2011 by wenddiver
I know it's not politically correct, but children need a Mother, Father and a dog to raise them.. Each provides inportant instruction and needs. If society can not find a real Man and woman, there is something wrong with the society. Children are humans and not experiments or props in some gay cause.

If we give a child to a man who thinks he is a woman, would we give one to a man who thinks he is a toaster or a fish?
09:53 May 20, 2011 by Crocs
@wenddiver

You think giving the opportunity to children to be brought up in a loving and caring environment by a same sex couple is simply "some gay cause?" I have seen dozens of people bringing up kids that clearly should not have kids, junkies, addicts and pure scumbags, ALL of whom were heterosexual. These kids then fall onto the same downward spiral their parents went down.

Have you ever even met children of gay parents? What difference does it make if a child is brought up with a single lone parent, a gay couple or a straight couple? NONE! it makes simply no difference, the parent's orientation is irrelevant.

The only thing that should matter is that the child is brought up in a safe, loving and caring environment. Your "some gay cause" comment is so typical of North America and the Christian tripe/bull that is taught in denominational schools across Europe

@Crocs-

Children try on roles in play based upon what they see other adults doing. To deny then a natural reproductive life i cruel and unssual. To tae other Hetero-sexual people's children away based on your judgment of those people, to give them to Homo-sexuals and say don't be judgemental is contradictory.

It's not about the Homo-sexual's rights, it's about the Children's rights and if they were fit parents, they would admit that. As to raising children, I found my son in one of the villages the Khmer Rouge destroyed in the Communist's efforts to take society back to the Year Zeroe (look up killing Fields of Cambodia). I was not looking for a Son, but I Could not leave him there.

He is a fine young man, but I am afraid for better or worse he tends to be like me. He is studying to go to the US Naval Academy. I doubt that is what his parents would have invisioned for him. Two years ago I tried to get him more in touch with his parent's culture, by paying for him to go to Cambodia and on to Thailand to study Muy Thai kick boxing, but I am afraid the US culture has caught hold.

Raising a teen-ager is hard,they are traumitized by everything and they ask difficlt questions (try explaining Leftists to a kid who lost both parents to the Communist Khmer Rouge some time, so that he doesn't take an axe to the next Leftist he encounters and end up in Prison), a Wife is necessary and your needs for a sexual prefference should never be put before the child or your not parrenting. If I knew then what I know now, I probably should have gotten married at some point for Hueys sake.

Some of the comments by fascistic religious types are revolting. As regards (pseudo-) "intelligent design", there is the possibility that God is a combination of both good and evil; since he is allegedly omnipotent (blarney!), evil (e.g., Auschwitz) cannot exist without his permission and his indirect causality . He seems, therefore, to incorporate withn his essence the agency of evil. As an uncaused being or unmoved mover, he has per defintionem no causality of his own, but there is really noting wrong with or inconceivable about a regressus infinitus. So he can be dispensed with; moreover, the alleged creator of the mulitniverse has produced so much physical redundancy and has so massively bungled in his creation of warped humanity that he may be likened to a deadly virus..
