Cabbie sex offender remains at the wheel

A taxi-driver in Uppsala in central Sweden who was convicted of sexual harassment against a woman passenger last autumn can continue to drive his cab after appealing the verdict, despite two more reported offences.

“I think it is terrible, he really shouldn’t be allowed to drive a taxi considering what has happened,“ said Johanna Olsson, one of the man’s victims to the broadcaster TV4.

In January, Olsson was returning home after undergoing surgery at Enköping hospital. Suddenly the cabdriver put his hand on her chest and tried to let it wander down towards her groin.

Olsson tried to protect herself from the man’s roaming hands but she was weak from the operation and in severe pain.

“I was in a taxi with a man I didn’t know and I had no idea what he was capable of, so I was terribly frightened,” she told TV4.

She is shocked that he can continue to drive a cab considering the charges against him.

But at the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) they say that there is little they can do.

“Before we can revoke a taxi licence the verdict has to gain legal force, which usually takes about three weeks. If the verdict is appealed we have to wait until the second verdict gains legal force,“ Rolf Arbin of the agency told the broadcaster.

Since harassing Johanna Olsson the man has yet again been reported. This time he allegedly groped and made sexual advances towards a severely ill woman in her seventies who was returning home from Uppsala hospital.

“The worst thing is that he is allowed to continue. No one knows how many women he has harassed,“ Olsson said to TV4.

Don't they know what "suspending" is at Transportstyrelsen?????

Hey Rolf Arbin, maybe the next victim will be your wife, daughter or grandmother. You can get away with pretty much anything in Sweden except speeding, smoking pot, illegal movie/music download and tax evasion.

Unbelievable. The Swedes like to boast about their wonderful record on women's rights yet violent sex offenders get let off without even a slap on the wrist. A man like this should never again be allowed anywhere near a job where he's likely to be left on his own with female customers.

Institutional insanity...

Commit a victimless crime and expect the book thrown at you. Commit violence or any real crime and and you are a VIP in these parts.

Wow! The things you will do in the name of pubic...ermm.... errata....public service !?!***

Whilst I totally agree this uncontrolled perv needs some punishment, I think hanging is a bit drastic, huh? Anyways, I think you make a very very valid point.

@Keith #5083

With "suspending" I meant to suspend his license (till court has reached a verdict). That will keep him off the street as well for now.
18:27 May 17, 2011 by drakhan
Yes, they should suspend him.

From a great height, with a rusty barbed wire noose, hanging over a bath of sulphuric acid, whilst slicing his nuts and then let him bleed to death.

Why wasn't this person deported? Crimes of this nature should carry an automatic penalty of deportation. Swedish women have suffered enough. This type of thing happens every day.
20:57 May 17, 2011 by StuartM
@ Infart

Deported? Where to? What country do you think's going to agree to take in all of Sweden's sex offenders? And don't say their native countries because there's plenty of sex offenders who were, believe it or not, born in Sweden. If Sweden doesn't want them then I don't see why anywhere else would.

Now that's what I call a Cash Cab!
23:17 May 17, 2011 by Infart
@ Stuart- If you're trying to suggest that this cabbie was not of foreign origin then I would say, it must be nice living in that bubble of yours. As far as where to deport them? Well, how about we try first and worry about the "what-ifs" later. Maybe you're ok with sex offenders of foreign origin being allowed to stay in the country because you're a man and will never have to worry about getting raped but trust me, there are plenty of women who are sick and tired of being targeted by the ones who Sweden is trying to help by letting in here.

hmmm.. you are beginning to sound like one of Saddam Hussein's followers.

sorry, I was teasing you by playing on the word. It also helped us both to promote your excellent idea.

I am thinking if they don't have a country of origin then send them to Hell but that is much too close (over the border in Norway) so maybe just suspend them as recommended above
02:20 May 18, 2011 by LonelyLove
Sweden, this is why the world is laughing at you.
06:28 May 18, 2011 by StuartM
@ Infart

You have no proof he was of foreign origin and as I said there are plenty of native Swedish sex offenders. Ever heard of Göran Lindberg? I'm not against deporting foreigners guilty of serious crimes and I think all sex offenders, regardless of their nationality, get let off far too lightly in Sweden. You should however stop using every single incident like this as an excuse for a pathetic racist rant. It's insulting to all of the women who have been attacked and abused by Swedes as you seem to be saying that the crimes they were subjected to never took place or are somehow less serious and worthy of attention than those perpetrated by immigrants.

@StuartM

Infart is the latest reincarnation of the oft banned American troll Tacos/Ravioli etc who comes on to TL to stir up dissent with his crap posts turning every story into a matter of immigrants

He will soon be banned again
08:37 May 18, 2011 by Infart
@ Stu

There's no proof yet but we'll see. I don't know of too many Swedes driving black taxis but you're right. No one has been identified yet. I don't know any other way to put it but I know a lot of girls and they all tell me the same things about what they fear with certain types of people based on experience. I hate to be so vague but I'd like to make sure this doesn't get deleted.

@ Meth

As usual, having an opposing view is "stirring up dissent." All I said was that a crime of this nature deserves a deportation. And the majority of people here seem to agree. So either debate the topic or skip it please. Thanks.
09:58 May 18, 2011 by Rick Methven
@fartbreath

You can NOT deport a citizen of any country. Citizenship means the right to live in that country.

You in your usual trolling habit are writing bullsh*t about something that you have no knowledge of.

If citizens of a country could be deported willy nilly you would have to live on Mars as nobody else would have you.
13:12 May 18, 2011 by insect
@Stu & Meth

Infart seems to be reading a completely different story from this one. In his story, the driver is an immigrant and the taxi was a blacktaxi. None of which I have seen mentioned in the story or in the tv4 news.........weird
01:28 May 19, 2011 by Keith #5083
I wonder what effect it would have if the public refused to take taxis driven by males in Uppsala until this person is either suspended pending the outcome of his court case, or has his licence withdrawn.
13:14 May 19, 2011 by farnoxo
How about sending Bubba the 300lb sex offender for a ride with this taxi driver...one way to build empathy!
18:44 May 19, 2011 by Infart
Gotta love how you can call someone "Fartbreath" on TL and not get banned but if you even suggest a criminal should be deported then your comment gets deleted. LOL.
08:01 May 20, 2011 by Rick Methven
Maybe because everybody recognises how descriptive and accurate the name was?

maybe when you need to create a new account when infart is banned you can choose fartbreath
