Police face machine gun fire in bank robbery

Published: 18 May 11 11:44 CET | Print version

A branch of Handelsbanken in Flen in eastern Sweden was robbed on Wednesday morning by masked men armed with machine guns.

According to local police, one of their vehicles came under fire in connection with the robbery but there are no reports of any officers sustaining injuries.

"They shot with a machine gun at the police unit which arrived at the scene in a vehicle. The vehicle was hit, but there are no details regarding anyone having been injured," Elin Almqvist of Södermanland County police told the TT news agency.

Almqvist said that reports indicated that four men hit the branch. A burning car has been found near Vallmotorp on route 56 near Katrineholm. Police suspect that the car could have been the robbers' getaway car and it will be examined by a forensic specialists.

The hunt for the robbers is ongoing, with police deploying a helicopter and setting up roadblocks in the area.

A nationwide alert has also been issued, and special operations teams of the police's National Task Force (Nationella Insatsstyrkan) have been called to join participate in the effort.

"We're using all available resources," said Almqvist.

A further car was also found to have been set alight in the vicinity of the bank during the course of the robbery, according to Almqvist.

"I heard the shots and staff from the bank came into my store and screamed that it was a robbery. They were shocked, and when I looked out I saw a masked man with a machine gun standing outside the bank," said one woman who runs a store in the vicinity of Handelsbanken.

Södermanland police have informed neighbouring police authorities.

Almqvist said that the police are treating the robbery as an isolated incident.

"This means that it is this (case) that we are working on now," she said.

According to the police the robbers fled Flen, located around 110 kilometres south-west of Stockholm, in a silver-coloured Volvo heading north.

Police received an alarm about the theft at 9.38am on Wednesday morning.

It remains unclear whether or not the robbers made off with any loot, but a witness told the local Eskilstuna-Kuriren newspaper that he saw one of the masked men come out through a window in the back of the bank holding a bag.

Swedish people sure are violent, somebody needs to do something to protect the innocent assylum seekers, before they get hit by a stray bullet or some Swede blows himself up with a suicide vest and they are injured.

Hopefully, the government can adress this soon and find a solution, like bring in more assylum seekers to control the native Swedes. It's all fun and games until somebody puts an eye out.

@wenddiver OH the irony! you are hilarious. Just note one thing: these stories that are translated from the major papers are only the ones that are reported upon. Mark my words, there are many many more incidents of violent swedes causing ruckus and mayham at the peril of asylum seekers. Definitely bring in more but be sure to provide them everything for free so that in 20 years their children can grow up with the proper values of their parents and contribute to society.

Some of the a sshat blame immigrants for any shits happens.

These sort of robbery comes from well-known newly joined European.

Was he using Russian machine gun? check all trucks they carry these weapons from Serbia, Russia, POland and so on....

Whoever says they are moving here to bring up their kids in a safe environment needs to think again. This country, whoever is causing the violence is going downhill fast and it seems to me to be beyond the ability of the police to prevent it.

Why could we not have a description of the perpetrators? Their appearance? Their accents? Their clothing? The we could assist in identifying these criminals and get the captured. Or have the social democrats, and their protective Saint, The DO on its high dictatorial horse, decided that to do so would be discriminatory, racist, and insensitive?
16:17 May 18, 2011 by Tanskalainen
"Machine gun" is a vague term. Could you give us a more specific description of what they were using? Were they really using machine guns such as a Thompson or an Uzi, or were they using an assault rifle such as an AK or a G3 etc.?

So the Polis didnt bother chasing the car that shot at them? Wow! Effective !

People in Sweden should be grateful to their elders for bringing here a taste of the real world, so you guys become familiar to what is going on in the planet earth, not only in the communist fairy tale that many seem to love.

Just pass a law making machine guns illegal and the problem is solved. Oh I forgot , there already is a law. Criminals just don't abide by gun control laws for some strange reason.

"Almqvist said that the police are treating the robbery as an isolated incident."

How do they know that? It is a high possibility that money you gain from here, it is spent on other terrorist activities. Sometimes, such money is sent to other countries to support some terrorist organizations. If the latter is the motive, then Sweden is an ideal country to conduct such crime, and police should be more active to prevent such activities.

Comic, how many fascists read English news instead of Swedish news. 1)There is no sign that robbery was done by immigrants and even if it is done by them, it is because of your refusing to give job to immigrants, discrimination produce criminality, people need money, food is not on the trees free to take. 2)Public was not in danger because of robbery than because police came to catch robbers and satisfy riches although bank get money from insurance company when bank is robbed. So, workers of bank (and cops) brought themselves and public in danger, they liked to save money much more than to save their life (I am sure big bosses don't care so much for workers how much workers care for profit of bosses). 3)I don't blame cop who saved his life instead to save money of riches, good that he was smart, robbers can be caught later or some other time, any life is more important than any money and riches have so much money they can't spend how much they have it. 4)It would be nice that fascists don't spread fake fears that whole society was in danger because of robbing one bank and don't spread false fear that it was done by immigrants. And don't forget to give job to immigrants if you are really interested to decrease criminal acts based on economic reasons.

Was there today trapped on the first floor looking out in Flen, Directly in front! Ducking at the bullets and the blowing up of the car. I only saw one of the robbers looking very militant and pointing a gun up at us and keeping guard outside. Scary morning then a couple of hours wait to get out of Flen as the roads were cut off. Yes he had a machine gun, I am not up to date with the latest weapons , a multiple round weapon. They seem to be very professional ex military. This did not seem like it was there first job. What I don't understand why it took so long for the police to react? Also if they shot at the police , how did they let them go.... Why??? they walked away with hardly anything too.

Thank god no one was hurt and I have no bullets in my car!

It was quite surreal , like watching a TV show,

")There is no sign that robbery was done by immigrants and even if it is done by them, it is because of your refusing to give job to immigrants,"

Yep. Blame others. That always works. LOL.
03:45 May 19, 2011 by tr2001
It's Swedish people, they are reluctant to do anything, solve problems etc. Probably they are afraid to chase the robbers. The ideology is lets forget it and hope that it won't happen again.
08:06 May 19, 2011 by wolverine2k
To all the trolls on local. Blaming immigrants will not magically solve the problems of police incompetency. Lets assume that in your ideal world all immigrants go away and only the blondes are left in Sweden, still if the police, political leaders and military is incompetent, the land of Sweden will be taken over by another military/political power. I think it is the immigrants which is saving this country.

So think before you wish trolls....

Sweden is a soft touch for hard core crininals,it does not matter where they come from. Its well understood that Swedish police will turn up later rather than sooner, and have no desire to be in a firefight, the criminals know this, and so take advantage of it. Should the next bunch of armed robbers be shot full of holes and put on the front page of every news paper, then some people may think twice. I think a lot of people moved to Sweden to get away from this kind of sh*t , unfortunately, the criminal element will always be on the look out for soft targets and easy money. Automatically blaming this on immigrants is just narrow minded.

The word "face" shouldn't be used as a synonym for "flee like a coward".

More courageous policing in Sweden. Now get back to arresting downloaders and cartoonists.

Rick Methven what are you saying. It was bl0ody scary and the only witness on the comment box........ Also there when they were treating Shock victims . Do they have no brains the robbers,???? it may have been pension day but they got away with more stress almost nothing! One was shot but saved by his up to date bullet vest! They had latest guns and newly kitted out..............

Please!!! Don't be like the U.S. press! A machine gun fires rifle cartridges that you can shoot accurately 1000 meters and is used to hunt big game like moose, elk or lions and wildebeast if you're in Africa. A sub-machine gun shoots pistol cartridges and an assault rifle shoots short rifle cartridges accurate to 500 meters and if you go lion hunting with it you will be lion dinner by nightfall.

PS: A .22 rimfire is not a high powered rifle. I'd be grateful if you could convince American TV news of this.
