Match called off after fan attacks player on pitch

A firework injured Helsingborg's goalkeeper, who was then attacked by a supporter on the pitch, prompting officials to call off Tuesday night's match against archrivals Malmö FF in the latest instance of football supporter violence in Sweden.

The start of the derby between the south Sweden rivals was delayed by several minutes after supporters for both teams lit fireworks in the stands.

After play finally commenced, it took 30 minutes for Helsingborg's Rachid Bouaouzan to net what would be the first and only goal of the truncated match, giving the visitors the advantage over defending Allsvenskan champions Malmö.

But shortly after Helsingborg took the lead, a firework was thrown from the stands at Helsingborg goalkeeper Pär Hansson, who immediately fell to his knees, clutching his head in pain.

As his teammates went to assist him, a Malmö supporter ran onto the field and managed to throw a punch at the already-suffering Hansson before teammates and police managed to wrestle the man to the ground.

"I just heard a bang and that Pär went down. Then I saw a person simply walk up to Hansson through it all and land a punch; it's just terrible," Malmö head trainer Roland Nilsson told Canal Plus.

In the wake of the disruption, referee Stefan Johannesson called off the match.

"When something like that happens on the pitch that can cause injury to players, there's really nothing to discuss. That's something that the players' association and we referees decided together a few weeks ago," he told Canal Plus after the match.

"We were in total agreement to just call off the match."

Malmö team captain Daniel Andersson expressed his disappointment and disgust following the incident.

"This hurts Malmö FF quite a lot. A supporter should support the team; this just hurts us," he told the local Skånska Dagblaget newspaper.

"I thought that Mälmö FF had come far in working with the supporters, but…"

Trainer Nilsson also voiced his frustration at the behaviour of the Malmö supporters.

"There was no reason to continue the match. There is a lot of frustration in the changing room over what happened…to carry on with crap like this," he told the newspaper.

Conny Karlsson, trainer for Helsingborg, said the fact that his club would likely be awarded a 3-0 victory for the match wasn't important.

"Now something has to be done about these damn maniacs," he told Skanska Dagbladet.

The incident comes just four weeks after an Allsvenskan match between Stockholm club AIK and Syrianska of Södertälje was called off after a firework thrown from the crowd hit and injured a referee.

The Swedish Football Association's disciplinary committee ruled against home team Syrianska, which was leading 1-0 at the time, handing AIK a 3-0 victory. However, AIK was also fined 150,000 kronor ($23,500).

The latest incident in Malmö could result in stiffer penalties because a supporter was attacked on the field by a supporter.

Is there any way Sweden can just kind of....give Malmö away to some other country? Or maybe pay them to take it? Ugh. Lots of disgusting news out of there all the time.
09:06 May 25, 2011 by WelshSwede
Its not just Malmö you retard, there is a problem with Hooliganism in Sweden as a whole, they need to look at how it was dealt with in the UK. Its been eradicated from the terraces in the UK now, so Sweden deal with it!
09:13 May 25, 2011 by Rick Methven
@WelshSwede

Sweden is also exporting its football hooligans to the UK.

Friday evening Ryanair flights to London are full of Swedes with bovver boots and Chelsea tattoos on the way to London for a weekend of fighting

Every article or item in the media about these kind of incidents should be accompanied by the names of all the sponsors of the team involved.

Oh what a beautiful game. All this fuss at such an amateur level. From Zlatan to this. An example to our children and their heroes of the future. Boycott violence.

Thats what you get with football..used to be a "game played by gentlemen and watched by hooligans". Now it is is a "game played by hypocondriac divas watched by hooligans". As they say .. small things amuse small minds1

I might be wrong but the last i heard of the syrianska v Aik match, syrianska was handed the 3-0 victory and not Aik as this article has stated.

Welshswede, rise and chima. You are all spot on.

We were standing with the Malmö FF fans behind the goal where everything happened.

The searching we received entering the ground was pointless and the stewards in general were shocking. The guy who pushed the HIF goalkeeper 'WALKED' 20-30 meters onto the pitch.

Its a small minority of numbskulls that spoil everything for the majority of good fans.
14:04 May 25, 2011 by JLondon
why not just get rid of the Allsvenskan - its crap anyways.... its like watching AFC Wimbledon ......
14:06 May 25, 2011 by canam
Maybe Swedes are just mad that they simply aren't that good at football anymore.
14:07 May 25, 2011 by Rick Methven
Its because it is so bad and boring that the hooligans take to fighting rather than supporting
14:17 May 25, 2011 by WelshSwede
Rick Methven

That may be the case, but its not happening IN the ground! You cant stop fighting outside the grounds or within a close proximity, what you can do is eradicate with good policing, trained stewards from the stadium itself and then allow the game to proceed. Not what's happening here IN Sweden, its not being dealt with and people concerned are unsure how to approach it apart form stick their head's in the sand and hope it goes away, which it wont!

So to blame it all on Malmö due to the difficulties the City is facing with other issues is completely dumb!

@WelshSwede

granted the Swedish hooligans that go to the UK are not causing bother on the terraces generally. It does happen from time to time as my wife's niece and a couple of her girlfriends found out when they where corralled at an Arsenal match with some Swedish troublemakers because they where in a block booking from Sweden and the Police kept the innocent Swedes locked up with the hooligans.

As to the Swedish matches, one of the problems is that these yobs are not interested in football just creating havoc. The same idiots who caused the problems at the AIK -Syrianska match from AIK turn up at Hockey matches as well. When AIK comes here to play LHC the supporters are escorted to the rink and there is massive police presence in the away area. after the match they are escorted back to the bus and the bus followed out of the City. The last time they where allowed into the City centre, their was knifings and fights all over the place and a hefty repair bill.

This type of violent behavior can only be ascribed to two possible options: A) Liberal/socialistic policies which have made people behave more like morons, and less like Swedes or, B) undesirable, alien, influences which has created a cultural morass in Sweden resulting in abhorent behavior. No other explanation is possible.

Yesterday there was a news article about someone who had been fined by the court because he chased down a bunch of kids who had thrown eggs at his home on Haloween, and threw thier eggs back at them.

If the system endorses kids like this, and fines a person for defending his property :- Surprise youv'e just hatched a new set of Hooligans.

You reap what you sow.
