Hooligan's parents' plea: 'don't hurt our son'

The parents of an 18-year-old football fan who ran onto the pitch and punched a goalkeeper during a match between Malmö and Helsingborg on Tuesday have made a public appeal against vigilante justice in the wake of threats made against their son.

"Don't let people take the law into their own hands. Instead, give him a fair sentence," the 18-year-old's parents wrote in an open letter published Thursday in the local Sydsvenska Dagbladet newspaper.

The teenager, who attacked Helsingborg goalkeeper Pär Hansson before being wrestled to the ground by police and other players, told police after the match he ran onto the field because he was "pissed off" that visiting Helsinborg had just scored a goal, the Aftonbladet newspaper reported.

In the wake of the incident, which has prompted condemnation from high ranking football officials as well as Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, the 18-year-old has faced a barrage of threats on the internet.

Fears of reprisals are so high that he now has police posted outside his home, according to the Expressen newspaper.

In their letter, the 18-year-old's parents call the incident "tragic", adding that "we don't defend our son's actions but we support him as parents because right now we are all he has".

"Today is a very sad day for us as parents," they wrote.

"We hope that some other parents can understand our hopeless situation. Parents whose children have also engaged in bad behaviour at football.

"We can only express our sympathies and apologise."

The 18-year-old admitted to police that he stormed the pitch, but has denied committing any crime. He is suspected of assault and disturbing the peace.

In addition, the teenager may be facing a million-kronor lawsuit from broadcaster Canal Plus, the broadcaster for Tuesday's match.

"Our point is that we need to get value for our rights and you have to place direct demands on those people who ruin Swedish football," Canal Plus CEO Johan Kleberg told media trade paper Resumé.

The TV channel has never before taken such measures, often offering instead to supply police with television images to help identify suspected hooligans.

Kleberg added that his company wants to help solve the hooligan problem in Swedish football by means other than purely legal.

Sime time in prison for the assault and a life long ban on visiting football games, would be in order. Oh yeah and Pär Hansson should be allowed to give a few punches back, somewhere in public.

Goalkeeper's plea: "punch him until he winds up at the hospital".
16:59 May 26, 2011 by Species125
Things would be different if Hansson had only had an egg...

And furthermore, why do vigilantes take on the cause of football but not, for example, the negligent death of Emil Linnell and so many others? I don't understand. Where are the vigilantes when it comes to the crimes of the medical elite?

Vigilante justice is a real problem and is why I support efforts to keep convicted criminals anonymous. Mob "justice" does not belong in a civilized society. Now tax money has to be wasted on keeping this loser from being attacked. Just great.

I think people do not watch videos on youtube, if you follow the same logic Jimmy Jump should have been executed few years ago. But instead, a tv/radio company that works with your tax money svt makes a documentary about him, which will be shown in fall. That guy entered the field, and just very slightly pushed the keeper, he did not attack, nor beat him up. Of course, these kind of cases should serve as lesson for other hooligans, in order to scare them. But that guy certainly do not deserve to be banned from stadiums forever...

PS. I am not a MFF fan, I support Brommapojkarna :)

why alwayz these kinda people exist in Sweden ?? lol...... I think this is a country of psychos ......

Admits taking the pitch, but denies committing any crime. He can't learn anything from this until he admits fault, unfortunately. Youth these days seem to come with a "World owes me" mentality built in. I think he needs to be made an example of. Then again, what difference does my opinion make?

A custodial sentence of a few months followed by a life ban from football stadium would save the cost of Police protection and remove another potential trouble maker from sport.
10:28 May 27, 2011 by rami_20
The police should not protect him. In the words on Iron Mike, "Theres nothing as humbling as having youre ass kicked.." That'll teach him a lesson.
11:42 May 27, 2011 by ebsor12
He would be promoted and made goal keeper to receive some incoming punches and people must be invited to do the same.

LOL

Swedish police have the worse attitude in the world. the person that they attacked was a human, not an animal...
12:52 May 27, 2011 by caps.lock
@otwa I suggest you to go to Azerbaijan, and see real police attitude, you will not only be beaten up, but will be arrested at least for 15 days, charged, and if they dont like you, they might find drugs in your pocket :)
14:12 May 27, 2011 by Syftfel
To what extent did this happen because of changing moral values (for the worse) and culture clashes?
01:13 May 28, 2011 by yogiman
It was a stupid thing for a young man, that old, to do.He should be punished harshly and banned from all games for (at least) 15 years.Maybe he will mature in that time.

I understand the parents dismay on his actions but I can tell them: You raise a child to a point in their life when their personal attitude takes over. You may be ashamed of their actions, but it is their actions, not yours.

He should be ashamed for embarrassing his parents. Is he?
17:24 May 31, 2011 by tadchem
Vigilante justice is irrational. Football fans are irrational. Charging the pitch in the middle of a game is irrational. Expecting a rational outcome from all of this is irrational.
