Record companies move to block Pirate Bay in Finland

Finnish record labels said Thursday they filed a petition in court to block access to The Pirate Bay, a popular Swedish website that provides access to copyrighted music, movies, and other material.

"The development of a legal online market is impossible in Finland if illegal services like The Pirate Bay are freely allowed to continue their operations," said Lauri Rechardt, a spokesman for Finland's branch of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents the companies.

Finland's Copyright Information and Anti-Piracy Centre filed the petition on behalf of the IFPI, asking the courts to require Internet provider Elisa to block access to The Pirate Bay from Finland.

Founded in 2003, The Pirate Bay makes it possible to skirt copyright fees and share music, film and computer game files using bit torrent technology, or peer-to-peer links offered on the site.

In April 2009, Pirate Bay founders Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm Warg were sentenced to prison and hefty fines for copyright infringement, but the site is still operational.

The funny thing here is that this request has no legal basis, and still a court of law is processing it.

Other funny things related to Internet censorship also happen in Finland - although censorship is expressly prohibited in the constitution. The police used a DNS blocking mechanism, built on the pretext of stopping distribution of child pornography, to block a Web site that was criticizing the police. What they did was completely illegal, and still the administrative court wouldn't even process an appeal as the police said there is nowhere to appeal to. A higher court then revoked the decision and now the appeal will have to be processed - but even when the police works against the law, the people appealing will still have to carry their own legal costs to get illegal decisions overturned.

But the magic words "child pornography" have been spoken. The real target is, of course, protecting the outdated business model of record companies and movie distributors. They are behind their times and abusing the legislation, but they are well connected in the ministries.

i didnt think people still used 'The Pirate Bay' there is still plenty of torrent sites out there... The Pirate Bay's demise hasn't stopped other sites from operating.....

I believe the pioneers of the internet recently criticized China for blocking access to websites.... I am convinced Sweden is becoming China......
