Reduce abortions by promoting adoption: Christian Democrat

Rather than abort unwanted children, women in Sweden should give birth and put the children up for adoption, a Christian Democrat politician has argued, hoping the measure would reduce the number of abortions in Sweden.

"Domestic adoption doesn't even exist. On the other hand, there are quite a number of Swedes who 'import' children from abroad; why can't we have some form of adoption centre in Sweden," Gunilla Gomér said to Sveriges Television (SVT).

According to Gomér, creating a adoption centre that would make it easier for women to place children in Sweden would help lower the number of abortions in the country.

Approximately 40,000 abortions are performed in Sweden every year, according to SVT.

Gomér stopped short of calling for an outright ban on abortions, however, instead comparing her proposal as part of a "zero vision" goal to reduce the frequency of abortions.

"Such a vision exists when it comes to road safety, there could also be a variant here," she told SVT.

Gomér, who currently chairs the pro-life organisation "Yes to Life" (Ja till livet), sits on the council of Västra Götalands region and recently saw her position strengthened following the county's election re-run earlier in May.

She claims that most of her party's voters support her position about abortion, and is critical of Christian Democrat leadership for not taking a clear position on the abortion issue.

However, Gomér's comments don't sit will with Stina Svensson, spokesperson for the Feminist Initiative political party.

"This is a step toward removing the right to have an abortion in Sweden," Svensson told The Local.

"It's a step toward removing a women's right to decide over her own body and something we are very much against."

Svensson also disputed Gomér's assertion that domestic adoption doesn't exist.

"Of course there is domestic adoption in Sweden," she said.

"Perhaps it could be developed in a simplified way that makes it easier, but it certainly exists."

According to Svensson,c Gomér "confuses two issues" by linking abortion and adoption in an attempt to advance the pro-life agenda in Sweden.

"To force someone to endure an unwanted pregnancy and be pregnant and then force them to give up the child is simply not appropriate," said Svensson.

I totally agree with Gunilla Gomér, it's an absurdity that 40,000 abortions are carried out in Sweden every year while couples are spending thousands importing babies from the third world, who despite their best efforts will often grow up feeling displaced and rootless. I'm refering to cases like the white middle class couple sitting next to me in a coffee bar recently proudly showing off to friends their newly imported African toddler. It left me feeling uncomfortable. Was it my imagination or did the young girl already look dazed and confused. Can't say I blame her if she did.

I've never understood medical science. On one hand a group of doctors have brought down the limit of viability (survival rates over 50%) to 24 weeks. On the other hand those who practice abortion want to extend the gestation limit over 21 weeks.

This is nothing to do with religion (myself, weddings and funerals only) but why pro-choice should only exist up to a certain number of weeks (medical reasons aside).

Those pro-choices who advocate abortion on grounds of rape, incest etc are talking about less than 1%.

Providing incentives for domestic adoption rather than abortion should be a no-brainer.

How about pushing for using condoms and birth control both men and women need to be using birth control not one or the other. I sure as heck wouldn't want someone telling me I had to carry a baby to full term against my wishes. Spend the time and effort in using birth control. Here when you go to bars they have a jar full of free condoms for people to take with them.

One good reason why these women abort the child is because were to quick pulling down the drawes while going about drunk and couldn't tell their husband/sambo there were carrying another man's baby.

It's ridiculous to use abortion as "after-the-fact birth control". Really nice modern "medicine" allowing us all to be gigolos and tramps.

@dizzymoe33 I totally agree with you! What IS frustrating is that so many people don't use birth control. I am very surprised every time I hear the numbers :( How come?.. Why? Well, I know their lame reasons, but they are not actually reasons.

Fair enough, They wish to exercise control over women and tell them what to do with their bodies, then we should tell the Christiantards what religion and what God to believe in.....

Women are not incubators for childless couples. The reason why some women, after a long and hard deliberation, chose to terminate a pregnancy, differs. Health issues, rape, financial concerns, it can be any number of reasons. We will never know, because, unlike other countries, Sweden does not demand that women issue a statement of their reason to seek a termination. The abortion rate has dropped the last few years and are now between 30,000 and 35,000. If we were to make abortions illegal, it would mean a lot more women being mutilated for life and some would die. Is that a price you're willing to pay, "right-to-life"? And to those who say that women should think twice before engaging in sex: It takes two to tango!
