Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf has denied all reports of alleged visits to strip clubs and contact with the criminal underworld, in an interview with the TT news agency on Monday afternoon.

"It is difficult to comment on something which one has not seen and which no one else has seen either," the King told the TT news agency referring to reports of compromising pictures which are at the centre of recent revelations.

The King's denials come after an extended period of turbulence and revelations over his private life and in the wake of polls indicating that support among the Swedish people had declined declining sharply.

Broadcaster TV4 reported recently that it had viewed the pictures which it confirmed featured the King in a strip club in the same picture as two women having sex, prompting questions over the king's private life and the company he was keeping.

The King denied in the interview that such pictures could exist.

"No, they can't actually exist," he said.

One of the King's close friends, Anders Lettström, admitted last week to contacting an alleged mafia boss to ask for help to negotiate with the strip club owner and stop him from making sensitive material public.

The King denied having had any contact with Lettström prior to him contacting the alleged mafia boss.

"No, as I said earlier I have not spoken to him recently. He does his thing. I don't decide over him - and that will have to stand for itself. It is regrettable that he showed poor judgement and came into contact with the wrong group, yes, shall we call them certain criminal groups," the King said.

The latest reports came just over six months after a tell-all biography of the King hit the bookstands, causing an uproar with its descriptions of his participation in wild parties and affairs with young women.

One of the allegations included in "Carl XVI Gustaf - Den motvillige monarken" ('Carl XVI Gustaf - The Reluctant Monarch') was a report that the King had conducted a year-long affair with the singer Camilla Hennemark and visited strip clubs in several world cities.

The King denied having visited the Gold Club in Atlanta in 1996 and the Carat Club in Bratislava in 2008, details of which were included in The Reluctant Monarch.

"Unfortunately, there are large number of people who visit these clubs, and which don't always have the possibility to keep a check on who was there and who was not there," he said.

When asked whether there was anything in the books which was true and could have possibly exposed the King to possible blackmail, he replied:

"No, there is in fact nothing," he told TT.

The King, who serves as Sweden's head of state as well as chair of the country's foreign affairs committee, also denied ever visiting places inappropriate for someone in his position.

"You don't know which sort of places you end up in sometimes. I thinking about when one is invited by a host who takes you to different places and so on. And that there should be some sort of strange or weird place like you're trying to insinuate…I've never had a feeling like that. There's nothing in that," the king replied.

He also denied knowing that Lettström had contacts in criminal circles.

"No. That has come out now afterward, it was a few weeks ago when it came out on the radio and on tape, quite simply, where he had been recorded," the King explained.

According to the King, he had "no idea" that Lettström planned to send an email to Swedish media outlets in which he took the blame for seeking help from criminals, asserting that he in no way pressured his friend into doing so.

Lettström's actions, however, had permanently damaged his friendship with the King.

"It's clear, after this situation, one has to reevaluate our friendship," he said, adding that he would only consider getting closer to Lettström "on my deathbed, maybe".

Carl XVI Gustaf also downplayed speculation that he may abdicate in the face of declining poll numbers, saying that recent events in no way affected his views about when Crown Princess Victoria should succeed him.

"It's like a tradition and custom so you can't just go about it that way," he said.

He admitted, however, that recent negative press has taken its toll on his family.

"Of course it's been tough. It's tough. Obviously, the rest of the family has taken this very hard as well, Together we'll probably get through it too," said the King.

In addition, the bad press has also affected views about the monarchy, he explained.

"It's clear that it damages trust in me, and even in the monarchy and Sweden. I'm really sorry about that. But that's something I'm going to fix and I'm going to work twice as hard in the future," he said.

so what. look at the swedish politicians - Mona, Goran etc who supposedly should take care of the deprived class. They ended up as, well let's say very privileged in terms of financial status.

The King has had a colorful life envied by many and the pitiful author should be ashamed to have written all this opportunistic nonsense.

Jeesh, give the Guy a break, from what I can see his only crime is the whole nobility stickt. Ok, maybe his tastes are pretty common, but how much harm was done? It didn't even make the newspapers in the US.

I'm sure he will do better in the future. People should get a life.

The difference is politicians can be voted out of office, which means they're accountable to the taxpayers...and, they don't require 50,000,000sek a year in salary. I seriously cannot understand why seemingly intelligent people go along with this royal crappola. Get a clue sheeple...
22:41 May 30, 2011 by procrustes
Leave the man alone. He is accused of nothing illegal, and trust me, Sweden, you DO NOT want Morality Police.

As far as Sweden having a monarchy, it's their cal and they don't have to justify it to anyone. "Seemingly intelligent people" do all kinds of stupid things...the American royalty is the Hollywood establishment. If one finds this hard to believe, look at a pedigree chart of all actors and you will find nothing short of an equivalence to royal bloodlines among actors. Seemingly intelligent American people go gaga over these people just as Swedes do over their royals.

You morons! You absolute friggin' morons! This is only the tip of the enormous iceberg demonstrating the true extent of the connections all "Royalty" has to crime, has ALWAYS had to crime. and you're dismissing them? And at what cost to you all is the royal family? You all whinge about the high cost of living in Sweden, then turn around and defend this scourge on society - you deserve everything you get.

Man, never, NEVER have I believed that humans are as dumb as I'm constantly being told, but you guys are basically excusing him? That'll do me! Hope your journey towards mindlessness is fun.

Politicians, royalty, head of state have never, will never have our interests at heart. Think for yourself, don't believe a word you're told (by me either) - consider everything possible and nothing impossible and do your own thinking.

04:39 May 31, 2011 by plnelson
I remain astounded at how otherwise sensible, intelligent people such as the Swedes (not to mention the Norwegians, Dutch, Danes, British and a few others) cling to the medieval concept of monarchy. You're paying millions to support a family who have no claim to taxpayers' support except some accident of birth. They haven't invented some great product or technology to advance the economy; they haven't cured a disease; they haven't defended the nation from some conqueror; they don't even work in a factory assembling things or in a hospital changing sheets and emptying bedpans.

Royals are social parasites, freeloaders, and moochers. The money spent supporting them could be better spent fighting crime, including the organised criminals the King is alleged to be friends with.
07:17 May 31, 2011 by swedejane
@procrustes Celebrities in Hollywood are not the same as royalty...not even close. There isn't a single celebrity in the U.S. who is tax payer funded. Further, you're not "entitled" to celebrity by birth rite. And finally, there are non-royal celebrities in Sweden, so you must be a very confused person to think they are the same as royalty.

Seriously, what's the big deal with going to strip clubs (or full on sex clubs that matter). Do you want your country to be represented by some asexual zombie ?
07:47 May 31, 2011 by eddie123
so what? you write crap about this guy to no end yet nothing can be done to him. do you guys want to abolish the throne? if so do it or just shut the hell up. you are speaking of a king. where was a security detail when he was going about with the mafia and strippers? or is it the case that swedish security is that incompetent? if the king was truly involved with all these, the government should be in the know via the secret service. thus, the question should be, who, if at all, covered the king's infamous deeds. those are the people the media should gun for - period!

Wow how surprised I was to see this story on the front page of an Australian newspaper....The Age, what I found interesteing were the comments of interested Australian, thought I might try and share a few with you all without breaching the law.....one reader had this to say ...'So what, he's the King! What's the point of being King if you don't get to have crazy parties, massive feasts & wild orgies? That's what I'd be doing if I was the King'.........another wrote......'Go King. The whole point of a man being rich and famous is to have sex with many more women than the rest of us' .....and how about a couple more.....'Whats the point in being king if you cant have a few wild parties, and wench and drink yourself stupid'.....'Let's just hope he always used a condom or he might end up sharing a cell with Julian Assange given how PC the poor old Swedes have become about sex.'

I always kind of suspected that deep down all the Royals of Europe wanted to live on Hamburgers, bomb people who irritate them, hang out with Gangsters, smoke Marlboro cigarettes, drive a Dodge RAM truck that gets about a mile to the Gallon, shoot at STOP signs, and hang out in Atlanta strip clubs.

Americans being the Sovereign in their own country understand how easy it is to get out of hand and that the press are all haters. Whose business is it really, where your car iis found Sunday morning if nobody was actually killed??? Same with the King, it's not like the King shot the club up or didn't tip the girls.
21:29 May 31, 2011 by kamika
Why the rush to judge? Innocent until proven guilty, I say. And if it is the truth that the king did these things then lying about it is the worst of the crimes, and he should abdicate.
