Many young Swedes favour dictatorship

Published: 3 Jun 11 12:04 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/34160/20110603/

Over 25 percent young Swedes think that it would be “good or very good” for Sweden to be less democratic and ruled by a strong and dictatorial leader, according to a new study.

“The benefits of a democratic society needs to be discussed and debated in schools, in the press and broadcast media and in society as a whole,” said Staffan I. Lindberg, research director for the World Values Survey Sweden, to The Local.

The new World Values Survey shows that 21 percent of 18- to 29-year olds in Sweden would consider changing party allegiance for a small cash imbursement.

Among the country as a whole the number dropped to 7 percent. Of those over 40 the number was 2 percent.

More than a quarter of the younger Swedes were also willing to give their vote to a MP in exchange for a job for themselves or a close friend or relative.

In a debate article in Friday’s Dagens Nyheter (DN) Lindberg wrote that scientists are seeing worrying threats against the foundations of democracy in Sweden, at the same time as dictatorships in the Middle East and North Africa are falling under the pressure of young people’s demand for a right to vote.

According to the survey, 26 percent of 18-29-year-olds thought that it would be good or very good if a “strong leader who didn’t have to care about a Riksdag or an election” ruled Sweden.

Older generations value democracy higher. 97 percent of those over 30 stated that it is important to live in a democratic country.

It is significant, wrote Lindberg, that the randomly chosen group of Swedes forming the basis for the study represented voters from across the political spectrum.

The participants were all in employment, had the same basic education and the same faith in institutions such as church, university, national defence and different types of organisations. None were more or less willing to take part in any forms of protests or demonstrations.

According to Lindberg some of the explanation may come from the “mechanic” view on democracy taught in Swedish schools, on young Swedes’ prevalent lack of confidence in the political parties and a more narrow consumption of news than earlier generations.

“The younger generation have a more individualistic approach. But they must realize that in order to be free to further individual gains, society must safeguard the general democratic rights which this builds on,” he said to The Local.

Has twentieth century history completely gone by on Sweden ? What sane person could possible think authoritarian fascism is the answer after all that happened ?

Are liberal values completely dead in this odious country ?

Mr Lindberg is in a meaningless public funded job spouting rubbish at our expense - let those in favour of dictatorship go and live under a dictatorship for 5 years and then ask them if they want to stay or come back to good old sweden

Wonder how many would choose to come back - my guess is 99,99999 %

Young people are usually a bit more ignorant, nothing strange here.
14:07 June 3, 2011 by Syftfel
The only question right now is, do we want a Stalin(killed 40 million people), or Hitler (killed only 12 million people). At the rate things are going in Sweden, we definitely need a dictator from the Right. It may give us a few years to eliminate the socialistic poison, and to eliminate the social dems completely! While we ponder over this, we should reset the voting age to 21. To allow 18-year olds to vote was a big mistake!

Seeing how most young Swedes come from countries whose leaders are dictators, I don't see how this would be any surprise. Zing!
14:48 June 3, 2011 by RobinHood
It's not only young Swedes struggle with the concept of democracy. This years "election" of a Social Demcrat leader had all the transparency of FIFA election. Both were as clear as Guiness and offered up single candidates to vote for. Left party leader Lars Ohly openly admires mass murderer Stalin and thinks Castro was properly elected.

Many, many politicians on the left consider democracy a useful train to ride to their desired destination, but then to be discarded to ensure their hold on power.

With "elected" leaders like this showing them the way, it's hardly surprising young Swedes don't understand what's required of them as citizens of a democracy. Schools should offer a revised program of education about the democratic system, how much has been sacrificed (usually by other countries) to preserve it, and how to recognise those who threaten it.
14:53 June 3, 2011 by wenddiver
@Mark the Texan- I am afraid you are right both the US and Sweden are taking in large numbers of people from countries that have no history of functioning Democracy or Republican values.

The awful part is, thanks to political correctness, nobody is supposed to tell them the Semocratic way is better than their old country. In fact any attempt to get them to fit into their new Democratic homes wil be described as racism and the Democracy is told to adopt to their way of doing things. This is in complete contrast to US immigrants who came through Ellis Island in the past who were bombarded with the desireability of adopting to their new home as soon as they got off the boat.

This is not good for the new country or the immigrant.

A benevolent dictatorship is actually the most efficient form of government. The big question is where do find a person to fill that role? I hereby announce my candidacy. Does princess Madeline come with the package?

I would like to know the ethnic background of the interviewees, let's say that this survey was carried out, errr, til exempel, errrrr in Rosengard or Södertälje.......

All young progressives should be forced to go live in a dictatorship for one year. If they can somehow get out of the dictatorship to return home, they should then be turned loose in their home country to proceed with their lives. I seriously doubt we would hear another peep out of them about wanting a dictatorship. But if we do, they should be forcibly relocated to a country that practices socialism/marxism so that the rest of us liberty lovers can pursue our lives in peace without being forced to listen to the constant mindless rantings of Leftists in our midst. I really do wish that all Leftists in America would just relocate to Britain or somewhere so that we can be rid of them. Their thinking is very near deranged and makes no sense at all, yet they have the vote.

The Local: Please change the title of your piece: "Young Swedes favour dictatorship: study" to "Over 25 percent of young Swedes favor dictatorship: study."

Otherwise it is not only misleading but also bad journalism.

"At the rate things are going in Sweden, we definitely need a dictator from the Right".

I thought Sweden was already being ruled by a dictatorship.

Syftfel: etymologically a deterministically mistaken (fel) mindset incapable of rethinking or employing analytical philosophical hermeneutics to open the phenomenological superficies as a menas of accessing the truth of any issue whatever, a crudely fascistic (faschistoid), grossly antidemocratic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, isolationist, anti-cosmopolitan world view.

Democracy is not the magic cure-all for all societies and is certainly not for everyone. In a nutshell, this was the answer to a question by the great contemporary historian, anthropologist and thinker Jared Diamond in a recent talk.

This survey confirms that a certain level of intelligence and education of the general public is essential for a functioning democracy (something that is not the case in most failed states). Also relevant for the debate on legal voting age.

Sorry for the majority participating in this thread, but, the only ones who do not dig that Sweden is a dictatorship, are the Swedes. Even Vladimir Putin, yes, the Zar of all Russia, says that Sweden is not a democracy, that it is a dictatorship. Are you shocked? Well, Putin was more. Just watch what happened at a press conference given by Putin and dictator Fredrik "Beaggle" Reinfeldt, when a journalist (me) from the Mexican television network, TVAzteca, was requested three times by Putin himself to ask him the most important question made in the whole press conference on April 27, 2011 in Rosenbad. Look in Google for "Putin dissar Reinfeldt", "Här läxar upp Putin Reinfeldt I demokrati" and many more. Putin made "potatismos" of Reinfeldt whith is Sweden included in a very witty and sarcastic way. .

For your info, it was when the Head of Press of Reinfeldt, Roberta Alenius, said "no more questions", when Vladimir Putin asked me again to do my question. Heja demokratiska Sverige! Ha, ha, ha, a thousand times.

I vote for a full Muslim dictatorship, any takers?

Didn't think so... But I'd be willing to bet that 800,000 of the non-Scandnavians residing here in Sverige would welcome it.

Then it would be official, as opposed to the denials issued by the Swedish government, as if the Swedish don't choose wisely, some day in the not to distant future, they'll be praying hands and knees on a carpet.

22:24 June 3, 2011 by Clarabow
Most people favour a strong leader and governance so the answer to the initial question may have been distorted slightly. Some would argue dictators still run semi-democratic countries albeit in another form - Putin comes to mind. I think this really shows a lack of understanding as to the 'nature of the beast' and since the world still has too many dictators in one form or another - as the middle-east, north Korea, China, Africa can testify, whose people would love to have Swedish democracy, one can only wonder at the figures quoted? But the young are much more black and white and of course more likely to want to change the current system and roll in the new. Hitler came to power with far less percentage approval, so educating the young on the dangers of dictatorships and the value of democracy might be a good idea.
22:37 June 3, 2011 by dizzymoe33

You will all be under Sharia law in a few years as things are progressing anyway, so just take it easy and wait. You will not have a choice. Isn't 25% in Malmö already muslim and hating the Jews? White people are next!

swedish youths are so ignorant and i can't even understand swedish politics not even talking about dictatorship. this is an awkward debate presented to youths who cannot even shower daily. you have to be more than 35 years old in sweden before you can actually understand the world. its a shame..

thats stupid, but i guess it comes from same kids that reject the holocaust ?

Any idiot can faceroll on the keyboard and get history videos of the results of dictatorships , why would anyone want a dictator ?

these kids are just ignorant then.

Do this Young -Swedes know history or just ignorant .
14:05 June 4, 2011 by motti
Years ago young swedes went to stay on Israeli kibbutzim to learn first hand the fundamental of real Socialism.

Today, they can visit so many dictatorships in Africa, Asia, South America, the world is their oyester. Their actions will speak louder than their words. No doubt, their mummy or daddy won't allow them. what a farce!
14:22 June 4, 2011 by Max Reaver
the swedish kids today are pretty stupid, just like most of the ppl who posted in this thread.
15:28 June 4, 2011 by conboy
Max Reaver being an exception? Who can blame the kids when they see what their King gets away with?
18:59 June 4, 2011 by mkvgtired
@T Murphy, perfectly stated.

@MarshaLynn, I just finished watching a documentary about people that escaped from North Korea. Seems like once people that have actually lived under a dictator get a taste of freedom they hold the opposite view of these young Swedes. Weird
06:44 June 5, 2011 by MNSwede
Please! What is happening in Sweden? Please educate the youth to the evil of dictatorship. Times are tough worldwide and WE ( all that favor freedom and God) have a tough fight ahead of us.

I am an American 2X removed from Sweden (my grandmother still spoke the language). I was hoping that Sweden would become quaint again so that I would have a refuge. Not so much now.

Maybe a little more time spent in developing a real world history curriculum and a little less time devoted to extolling the virtues of the royal family in the swedish school system would help.
18:13 June 5, 2011 by wxman
It was primarily young people who made this fatal error in Germany in the 1930s too. Some people just like being lead rather than be free. It makes life a lot easier by eliminating all those pesky person decisions.
23:22 June 5, 2011 by Rebel
Heck, the average Swede of any age would gladly give up all their democatic rights to a UN dictatorship.

Relax people - this artical is pure diarrhea - the local journalism at it's best..
10:17 June 9, 2011 by tric
So the majority of young people have already learned to appreciate the freedom of democracy even though many of them are frustrated and cynical with the only government they have ever known. I would suggest this is positive, and does not reflect an upcoming return to Naziism, but rather that those that have not yet matured have a very high probability of doing so (as referred to by the studies results of the older age group) Or, we could say the world is going to end, and it we should have no faith in the youth of today... funny which option people like to choose. Have a little more faith in your common man/woman.

It doesn't matter if it is presented as democracy or dictatorship, the scheme of how a society works:

http://pages.uoregon.edu/kimball/images/iww-pyramid.better.gif

Change the religion by media, the kings by bankers-big money players and you have it.

Dictatorship it is only a problem if the big-capital says that they are a problem. Gadafi was a good friend of many countries not so long ago, and his regime was not questioned. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are not a problem.

Well, two generations of no discipline of children, acquiescence to their every brat demand, and this is what happens: When they come of age they cry for a totalitarian dictator. It comes as no surprise to me.
