I really do not get it. Muslims are the LEAST "multicultural" gathering in the world. And yeah, it is a religion, not a culture, but this religion eradicates and melts every part of any culture in everyone it meets and replaces it.

Anyway, people really need to relax and get a broader view of things. While "multicultural national day" doesn't really roll off the tongue, I think the point is that to celebrate national day is to really embrace an idea. The idea that people with different perspectives and points of view, of different talents and strengths and weaknesses, can live together and thrive together. America, despite its innumerable flaws that get catalogued daily by the world, is an example of this. To say anyone not white enough or christian enough doesn't belong in your country is to put yourself and the next generation at a great competitive disadvantage.

I congratulate my swedish friends on this day for a great country and a great society they have created here. In a world with many examples of intolerance, sweden provides a great example of how many nations *should* be.

And the racists and xenophobes come out of hiding again. I agree with the author of the article that xenophobes should not be allowed to hijack our national day. I disagree with him however when he says that multiculturalism should be celebrated during this day. So what do we have here? An article I mostly disagree with. But do I care? I see the national day as a time for celebrating my Nordic heritage. I visited the Royal castle and went on many museum tours to learn about our royal history. I listened to choirs singing Swedish folk songs and waved as the Royal family drove by. Then I finished the night off with some clearly non-Swedish food and a concert (the horror!) This is how I decided to celebrate our national day. If someone wanted to go and see the Swedish/Somali exhibition then GOOD FOR THEM. I don't give a damn what others do, nor should anyone else.

I don't see the point of this story in The Local. Any article about immigration in Aftonbladet or elsewhere is bound to get spammed by the SD's internet warriors who have nothing better to do with their time than spout racist, xenophobic crap. A few hundred idiots are not representative of the Swedish population as a whole who generally continue to be open and tolerant towards people from different cultures. I do think that too much of an emphasis on multiculturalism can be dangerous if it leads to minorities being further isolated inside ethnic ghettos but the answer is certainly not more racism and intolerance which can only hinder integration and foster a sense of grievance and social exclusion.

I see no reason why immigration and tolerance for other cultures is a threat to the welfare state. Immigrants keep some of our most important public services running and will likely be required even more so in the decades ahead in order to care for Sweden's ageing population. There are certainly legitimate concerns among the trade union movement about social dumping bringing down wages but that could quite easily be solved by tightening labour regulations and making sure all workers have the same pay and working conditions regardless of where they come from. I'm not against borders and protecting national sovereignty but I think the main threat to these is the EU (together with global financial institutions like the IMF). Why not challenge economic globalisation and the powerful corporate interests it serves instead of putting the blame on migrants from the third world who are either fleeing persecution or simply looking for a better life for themselves and their families?

When you are dealing with an ideology like Islam normal western paradigms that is a set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline is not sufficient to cope.

Why is this ?

Because Islam is based on a completely different set of assumptions and principles.

The main difference is that for a Muslim everything comes from Allah including jurisprudence, property law, womans rights, attitudes towards homosexuality, relations with the Jews, relationships toward the Kuffar - that is you and me. However they are not and never will be. The search for moderation in Islam is like searching for the Unicorn. Whilst it is true that there are "moderate Muslims" there is no moderate Islam. And moderate Muslims are only moderate whilst they are in a minority something our politicians had better take on board for all our sakes.

According to one source %84 of the Koran is taken up with issues relating to non-Muslims and how to deal with or relate to them. This makes the Koran a book that deals in blueprints for conquering the non-believers.

And the Muslims have been successfully using the methods set out to conquer and destroy non-Muslim civilisations for 1400 years. On this point there can be doubt. Most of the presently constituted Muslim lands were conquered by the sword, their inhabitants enslaved, their cultures ruined and the remaining peoples made to convert or to accept Dhimmi status. The Christians, Zoroastrians, Animists and Jews all suffered this fate.

It is also interesting to note that there is not one fully functioning Muslim democracy in the whole of the middle east.

This is the nub of the question; can Britain or Europe remain as democratic, free nations with Islam in the ascendant ?

I don't have a nicer way to say this, but: reading these comments make me lose all faith in humanity. Honestly, what planet do some of you come from? First of all, if you're born on American soil: you would do good to realise that Sweden is a socialist utopia, always has been and that is exactly why the country thrives today! It's because of their laws that encourage or even enforce openness and equality. This clashes with the American ideal of "fairness": for many of them, you deserve to get more if you, for some reason, are entitled to it through means of prestigious universities, well-connected jobs or simply through heritage.

Sweden does not work that way, and I am thankful for that. Yes, there ARE problems with immigration, but only so many. I PhD in media-related effects on public opinion, but you don't have to get even the most basic schooling to learn to be a bit critical about the media: 20 years ago, commies were the scapegoats; with the fall of this ideology in Europe and Russia, the Western world needed someone new to put the blame on. An attack on American soil (9/11) was all that it took; do notice that ever since that day, almost ALL of the European countries are taking, or have already, a strong course for right politics. Do you really think we just had that many more immigrants the last decade? No, because before we were flooded by many other immigration groups (Turks, Moroccans, Italians, Albanians, Chinese, Vietnamese, Iranian ) the list goes on) before and nobody gave a damn. Sure you had the hardcore racists, but they are needed to keep the balance.

What I'm saying is this: don't believe everything the media tells you. By now, many of you (especially commenting on this article) have already been primed into thinking negatively whenever a foreign name appears in the newspaper. So let me ask those people who are so furious about this Aftonbladet article then: did they also read the item on (serial) killers who are being released within 20 to 30 years? If I recall correctly, the large majority (if not ALL) were Swedish. But the media is hardly going to say "there were no immigrants involved" as that would imply they expected this exact thing. See what the paradox here?

So please, for the love of god, do yourself a favor and stop being a brainless zombie and form your own opinion. Globalism is the future, whether you like it or not; you can, as a country, stay behind but not forever. Look at Switzerland, which used to be the free country of the world - it has arguably the most racist politicians in Europe. And trust me, the growing economies as Brazil, China and India are on our economic doorsteps, so a small country like Sweden would be powerless without its immigrants and without the EU.

@ uncle As far as your comment (#50) for once Uncle, I agree with you whole heartedly. The history of Christianity is written in blood, right from it's inception. Most organized religions have a history of violence. Remember, we are NOT talking about faith in this respect, we are talking about organized religion...HUGE difference. Faith is a pure thing, religion is for the most part corrupt as it too is a form of governing people. We ALL can agree governments are corrupt to a greater or lesser degree. People always fear what they do not know and can not understand. I speak English as my first language, also French and Swedish ( a bit poorly unfortunately) The isolation and fear I felt before I could understand Swedish was new to me when I moved here from Canada(to marry a swede) I understand that language differences can be a huge barrier. I also understand it is comfortable to revert to your native tongue where you have a much larger grasp of the vocabulary and subtle nuances of expression. Fortunately (for me) most swedes speak english so, if they hear me speaking it, they understand for the most part and I am not viewed as an interloper or a threat. Also, my clothing is pretty much the same. When they pass someone in different dress, speaking Mandarin, Arabic or Chinese (to name only a few) it is a natural instinct to be wary of the unknown. I get that. But we are all human no matter where we came from.You can not judge a culture by a blanket view, I.E. all Americans are arrogant, all muslims are muderous welfare recipiants. This is just stupidity. In reverse, to the immigrant people. It is far easier to segregate and continue only speaking our first language and being afraid of the unknown qualities that the new swedish culture represents. But it only makes it more difficult for us and we are understood and accepted less. I am proud to be a English speaking Canadian and I love Canada. It is my homeland. But it is necessary for me to learn to be a new Swede in order to be a valuable asset to my new country and for my own happiness. Everyones homeland holds their heart. It is the place of our youth, but we moved here for a reason. We live HERE now among the Swedish people who have gratiously allowed us to come. Why celebrate a policy that the leaders of England, Germany, France and most regular people admit has failed. I agree that it seemed like a good idea on paper, everybody working towards the same goal. But that is not the reality of the situation. I don't disagree with you on Sweden withdrawing from the EU, in fact that is a great idea. However, the same reasoning applies to withdrawing from the EU as restricting immigration and refugee acceptance. The EU is also a failed multicultural experiment. The priorities of Greece or Italy are not the priorities of Sweden and Finland for example. The EU is not homogenous. It is made up of vastly different cultures,mentalities and proud nationalities that will never come to any lasting agreement. Sweden would have been much better off starting a Nordic union. Why? Because the cultures are not so dissimilar.

The integration problem that Sweden has is just on a smaller scale. I don't think we will ever see eye to eye on that one though.
