Nuclear weapons threat remains high: study

Swedish think tank SIPRI warns in a new report that meaningful nuclear disarmament remains unlikely in the near future, observing that 5,000 nuclear weapons are currently deployed worldwide.

"More than 5,000 nuclear weapons are deployed and ready for use, including nearly 2,000 that are kept in a high state of alert," according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

SIPRI's report said the world's eight nuclear powers -- Britain, China, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia and the US -- possess more than 20,500 warheads.

As of January 2011, Russia had 11,000 nuclear warheads, including 2,427 deployed, while the United States had 8,500 including 2,150 deployed, the report said.

The US and Russia have signed a Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) that calls for a maximum of 1,550 warheads deployed per country.

However SIPRI argued that prospects for meaningful disarmament in the short term are grim as all eight countries seem committed to either improving or maintaining their nuclear programmes.

"The five legally recognised nuclear weapons states, as defined by the 1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty are either deploying new nuclear weapon systems or have announced their intention to do so," the report said, referring to Britain, China, France, Russia and the US.

India and Pakistan are "expanding their capacity to produce fissile material for military purposes," according to the report.

SIPRI Director Daniel Nord said south Asia, where relations between India and Pakistan seem perpetually tense, is "the only place in the world where you have a nuclear weapons arms race."

While Israel, which has never conclusively declared itself a nuclear weapons state but is almost universally assumed to be one, "appears to be waiting to assess how the situation with Iran's nuclear programme develops," SIPRI said.

Nord argued that because "nuclear weapons states are modernising and are investing in their nuclear weapons establishments (it) seems unlikely that there will be any real nuclear weapon disarmament within the forseeable future."

The report said that North Korea "is believed to have produced enough plutonium to build a small number of nuclear warheads, but there is no public information to verify that it has operational nuclear weapons."

Nord identified Pakistan "losing control of part of its nuclear arsenal" to a terrorist group as a specific concern.

He also voiced worry over the potential consequences if "Israel or the United States decide that they will have to intervene and do something about the programme in Iran."

Iran has repeatedly insisted that its nuclear programme is non-military, but several world powers have demanded closer international inspection of Iran's nuclear sites to verfiy the claim.

SIPRI is an independent institution that receives 50 percent of its funding from the Swedish state.

In the already volatile Middle East it's a countdown to the abyss should Iran ever say " Yes, we can!"

It should be a matter of serious concern to everybody when nobody is out of range.

How about stopping invasion of countries, with false reasons, or without any reasons at all?

i.e.:

Invasion of Iraq

Invasion of Afghanistan

Iran is right in the middle of these invaded and occupied countries. Nobody did anything about them, and the people there are still suffering. (30 civilians dying every day, over the last 6 years period, according to internal US military documents leaked by Wikileaks)

100,000 people dead in Iraq

20,000 people dead in Afghanistan

Iran is subject to constant threats of aggression, by the US, and Israel;

The US has got 8,500 nuclear BOMBs including 2,150 deployed.

Israel has got 80-400 nuclear BOMBs.

What would you do, if you were under threat of invasion from two armed states, who have invaded your neighbors?

Iran's nuclear program is legitimate, according to IAEA, and NPT-treaty.

Iran's military strategy is defensive; to deter an invasion of Iran.

The US is after Iran's oil and wants to rule the world, by controlling the energy resources of the middle-east.

Iranian people do not like to be anybody's slaves.

And the threat comes, not from the US, Britain, Israel or France. It comes from Pakista, Iran, North Korea and other third world latrines, ill equipped to handle the responsibility. These nations are nothing but dogpounds ruled by insane dictators of questionable intelligence, in many cases blinded by religious rage. Hence Iran MUST be prevented from ever aquiring such weapons. Even at the expense of the West nuking Busheer, Natanz and Teheran. It is absolutely critical amirhosein! Do you hear that? The rulers of Iran with diapers on their heads have to be taken out, should they attempt to acquire the bomb. At any cost! PS. The iranaian people are already slaves under the heavy burden of islamic dogma.

Frightening assessment!!! Since NATO as weapon of imperialism is killing poor people around the world, the assessment given here by Nord points to the fact that one day NATO will kill itself. When will man be civilised and live in peace with another man no matter their belief, religion and colour? We don`t hear songs of peace from the so called world powers, all they sing are songs of WAR.

As long as Irianain missles cannot reach the US I sleep well, Europe on the other hand?? Kidding aside, after having having only 2 atom bombs used in WWII, with all the wars and talk of invasion, "police" actions, and other saber ratteling, no other country has used them,. Korea, Veit Nam, the on going problems with India, Pakestan, they are a useless weapon. But as North Korea has found out, they are a great bargining chip, that can be sold for a high price, and have the "major" powers make think you are important. (All dictators with those funny hats like to be important)

If we want world peace and not world war, then we should take the possibility of the Islamic Republic of Iran armed with nuclear bombs capability, plus being armed with a suicide bomber's mentality and a well known martyrology complex and consider Ze'ev Maghen's thoughts here: “Eradicating the "Little Satan": Why Iran should be taken at its word”, most seriously:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Eradicating...lient=firefox-a

You say that “Iran is right in the middle of these invaded and occupied countries”...true.

And Iran is so far away from unoccupied Israel...not true?

It's true, at least two years ago Iran was completely surrounded:

http://www.chartingstocks.net/2009/06/iran...e-iranelection/

Today the picture is slightly different and more complicated by the nightmare of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal falling into Terrorist hands.

But I think that you'll like this amir hosein: a paranoid Pakistani professor doesn't even worry about that in his latest mighty Shaitan conspiracy theory which should delight you:

@SYFFEL- Don't you think Comparing Iran, North Korea and Pakistan to latrines is unfair? Most latrines are pretty clean in the US.
